HOT TAKE: FFVII is the worst Final Fantasy, considering that it has the least efficient magic system, no job options, no class changes, and the worst minigames in RPG history.

Job/class shit is invariably a joke in JRPGs, especially FF. You make one guy the fighter, one black, one white, and one oddball, level them up a bit, then shuffle the shit around, make someone else the fighter, someone else a mage. After a while everyone has roughly the same hodgepodge of skills, or it amounts to the same effect. This is exactly the same result as just being able to define a character through materia. Except, you actually have more freedom/options in 7 because the characters have limit breaks and more stat variance. In 5 it doesn’t matter if you make the little girl or the old man the fighter or whatever.

I can't replay FF7 without having a guide next to me for the 100%, there's a lot of spells and monster skills not to mention two weapons for Barret and Caith Sid that are completely gone once you pass the places where you are supposed to get them.

This. It has the best of both worlds and although 5's or Tactic"s job system does feel a little richer, the way materia works is essentially a job system. The characters are distinct enough from a design perspective that is not entirely bland to be able to make any of them into any kind of a "class" you want. In fact, it let's you give them your own personal subtle flavor that matches your perception of their character which probably is ideal for some people.

Except it's irrelevant because the game is unlosable. The system is a toy rather than a game. Everything's balanced to let you win even if your setup is completely braindead.

How did you find that out? It might be an utter mess for all we know. A game that actually puts FFVII's materia system to the test doesn't exist and never will. If you make the game challenging, the materia system might as well prove to be a horrid chore due to inobvious, obscure percentages, bonuses and penalties applied everywhere. It's only subjectively alright because you're never punished for having an inefficient setup.

It’s nothing compared to FF9. I could probably cite every meaningful FF7 missable off the top of my head, not counting shit you’d have to be brain-dead to miss like the Leviathan Scales.

The sidequest where your materia is stolen and anything that ripples from that can’t be initiated on disc 3.

Turtle’s Paradise flyer in the Shinra Building has to be obtained in one of two visits although rewards aren’t unique. HP Shout/Missing Score (need Barret in party).

Princess Guard in temple, Umbrella in Speed Square (disc 1 only I think) if you care.

Neo Bahamut in crater, the only materia-on-the-ground that’s a bit easy to miss forever.

Huge materia challenges can’t be retried, as if you’d need to though.

Other missables are your own fault if you pass up shit that’s right in front of you. Everything else is not missable although some think Vincent’s ultimates and snowfield junk is missable (you don’t have to visit Lucrecia on disc 2/snowfield can be revisited by bird). Some weapons and whatnot are missable like Yoshiyuki I think but you can’t really fuck up anything good by missing them like you can if you miss a Summon.

Ugh. And when you get to that part the plot is just a confusing mess of events, but now you get to figure out where the fuck to go.

Also the shounen manga plot writing is so boring, awful, and cringey. I honestly think the Japs forgot how to tell a good story and just throw dozens of characters into everything instead.

A game that only the weird spazzy girl in middle school who fapped with whiteboard makers in class would truly like.

I keep trying to complete FF8. I've just realized it's garbage and started playing FF7 again. Why they took such good systems from 7 and fucked it up in 8 god only knows. Game penalizes exploring because enemies get harder as you level. Draw 100 spells for each party slot for each spell to increase stats. Buying weapons is totally fucked. GFs are overpowered early and then completely underpowered later. Protagonist is goth douche. Have to play stupid card game to get any good magic, abilities, or weapons.

The materia system is great and fun, but it's hindered by it's useless characters. The limit breaks are all kind of the same, the stats are the same, and the diversity of your group is based too much on materia. I wish Aerith didn't die because she had support limit breaks. Being able to noticeably modify vincent for his berserk mode would be great too. The Materia system drops off as interesting in the game after disc 1 and comes back into play if you do emerald and ruby, but otherwise......A lot of materia is worthless collect fetch level up time sink.

>> No.5679809

>The limit breaks are all kind of the same,
True, most of them are just about piling up the damage numbers. Unique ones like Barrett's Mind Blow were seldom used, Aeris' healing/guarding limit breaks and Fury Brand were underachieving for obvious reasons, only Red hat some decent stuff with Lunatic High and Howling Moon. there should really have been more of this, especially because there were two limit breaks for each level, so no reason to have two plain damage moves next to each other.

I keep hearing about how hugely overrated it is. It's definitely not the best RPG ever, not even the best JRPG ever, and not even the best Final Fantasy ever according to a sizeable proportion of fans.
It's too easy (understable since it's a JRPG), the battle system is roughly the same as previous FFs since FF IV introduced the ATB, the characters don't feel like they have specific purposes since their base stats aren't that much different and their most distinctive feature is their Limit Break, and you can spec everybody pretty much any way you want with Materias.
Even the graphics aren't that impressive today. I don't even particularly like RPGs or JRPGs (the only one I played before was FF IV on PSP).
And even then, I'm on my first playthrough (completely blind except that I know Aerith dies), I'm at the Golden Saucer, and I feel like I play something very special. I don't know if it's the characters, the setting (I've been raised on GITS, Akira and 90's anime in general), or the story, but I'm having an absolute blast, and generally feel like I'm living a incredible adventure in a world that can be dark and depressing, or bright and joyful, or nostalgic and poetic. I probably sound like a huge faggot but this game makes me feel some stuff, and that's extremely rare.

>> No.5681529

I'm playing through for the first time since I never finished it as a kid. Are there any points where I'm going to be fucked over for not evenly leveling every party member? I've played through the whole game a few years ago without reading any guide, don't worry, you don't have to worry about level differences. If I remember correct, inactive members get passive lvl-ups, plus a lot efficiency comes from materia which is automatically unequipped when character becomes unavailable for story reasons. As long as you don't forget to equip materia/get new equipment, you'll be fine.
