Half of you whiny, contrarian faggots screamed non-stop about how DOOM 2016 wasn't a slaughterwad. People bitched and moaned about how there was only a few enemies on screen at a time. And you know what? That complaint wasn't totally invalid. Combat was still fun, but only two barons and three imps at the end of Argent didn't give me the same feel as the ending of, say, Plutonia.

Now, this demo gave us another arena. You can like them, you can complain about them; either way, I have few strong feelings about the area deal. They were fun in 2016, but the original corridors were also fun. But that's a debate for another day. How this factors into your complaint is that you're calling an arena "messy." A system of corridors is going to play differently from an arena. An arena is supposed to be hectic. It relies on reflexes and quick thinking. You're supposed to strafe that baron, jump to you left, shoot and grab health from that imp, all while keeping tab o the two cacodemons spewing shit from behind you. Systems of hallways are more cerebral, and force you to think more about what you're going to do about those archviles in the locked rooms while they respawn the chaingunners across the hallway. These are two different philosophies in enemy placement and design, and as far as Eternal goes, it seems to be pulling arena combat just fine.

If you prefer the Plutonia approach, I don't fault you. It's good on its own merits.But this is not Plutonia. You are barking up the wrong tree. This is an arena. It's supposed to be hectic.

That E3 presentation made me really depressed. They turned Doom into some really weird and horrid looking Quake. The FPS genre is still refusing to properly evolve. I'm not going to focus on any AAA games anymore - it's a completely moribund genre in terms of direction and soul. I can only pray that the indies and mid-range games carry the torch and eventually drop the derivative nonsense that has overstayed its welcome.

I loved it, but yes it gets absolutely brutal. It took me weeks of reloads to finally beat it. I've been posting about the wad on and off for weeks here.
JPCP is pretty hard so far too, but it's odd in that the difficulty is really inconsistent and some of the maps are pretty amateur but overall I like it.

Doom64 'Master' Edition or whatever is neat, but I dunno if it feels as authentic as EX. Just feels like normal Doom with a skin, where EX feels really similar to the actual game, to me. Just watched the Bethesda E3 show and I haven't checked this thread yet but I have really high hopes for it. It looks incredibly fun to me and everything I was looking for in a reboot of doom 2016. I really dig how the bigger monsters are less bullet spongey now and dynamically have bits of armor and flesh fly off the bone while shooting them. It looks super responsive. My only issue so far was the lack of music in the gameplay trailer which felt off to me. While I haven't read through the thread yet, I'm going to say it's fair to assume all of you guys hate it knowing yall's contrarian hivemind.

That's because he was obsessed with graphical fidelity; the initial engine for the Saturn rendered fast and with little slowdown, but it showed texture warping like you would see on Playstation Doom, and he didn't like that, he thought it made the game ugly.
Playstation Doom was actually approved while John Carmack was absent, Romero thought it looked sweet (because it was), but it likely would have gone the same way if Carmack had been there.

Romero sees the texture warping, but recognizes it as a tradeoff for better performance (these are weaker machines after all), something Carmack wasn't properly considering at the time. This was the age, more than any age after that, where PC games ported to consoles would have to make some serious sacrifices.
He did however admit that the Saturn port didn't turn out well, and that 'he should have allowed for more experimentation', so it's not like he didn't understand that it was a bad judgement call (though he's maybe a bit too proud to state that outright).

He's a bona fide genius, but sometimes he doesn't see the forest for all the trees.

Now since you've mentioned it, I suppose thumbsticks are too blame for the lack of platforming segments in fps games (or at least on consoles). I remember playing jumpmaze wads on skulltag and how making the jump wasn't as hard as landing it. Do to the momentum and sliding in skulltag, every time I landed I would rapidly tap W/S to stabilize myself, so now doing something like that with an analog stick would be close to impossible. I suppose using the d-pad would actually help with this, kind of like how duke64 used the c-buttons on the N64 for movement. However, I don't see consoles users ever utilizing the d-pad for movement as they believe it would be too archaic in design. A shame really.

Then again jumpmazes are precision platformers, and not the ordinary kind. Duke3d/64 was no precision platformer and despite that, jumping still added more versatility to the movement and complexity to the maps design.

It's ~7-8 hour long, 4 of which are cinematics, cutscenes and wandering around the base.

I'm not kidding, there's only ~3-4 (depends on how you stretch it) hours of actual "shooting nazis" time, while the rest of the time it's the game telling you how nazis are bad and you should totally go shoot them, without letting you go and actually shoot them.

And there's some padding with "side missions", which are the same missions you already played, just with enemies in slightly different places, and no scripted events/minibosses.

Basically put they doubled on all the worst parts of TNO, and tuned down all the good ones.

The "It's just a dumb game about shooting nazis" excuse no longer works in this one, since it's mostly a "dumb game about watching evil nazis being evil, and maybe some times shooting them", which is way too dumb.


I pirated it, and I regret wasting my time on it. The coming sequel looks like the developers didn't learn a thing, and again going to push the dumb plot before the gameplay, so I'm not hopeful for the futur of the franchise.

one underrated aspect about Eternal is that enemies seem like they deal respectable damage this time around. the player was getting clawed at constantly in the first demo and the baron fireball he caught brought him to 50 hp. he also leaps faster. same for the mancubus.

I'm honestly surprised that nearly every qualm about this game that I've read about seems to be in regard to the visuals. which is good, the more vocal people are about things, the more likely they are to do something about it. I'm glad that the HUDs are universally agreed upon to be utter trash.
