What is your favorite RPG? Do you prefer customization with jobs and lots of characters, or linear progression where every character learns one thing after another and you can't change their path? Do you prefer action RPG or traditional RPG?

I'm going to play Dragon Quest 7 next

Recently i have played FF5, Dragon Quest 3, Ys: Book 1 & 2 (don't like), Secret of Mana (not sure), Chrono Cross (okay but some really weird and bad design choices), Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (not sega version, seems like it will be linear, sega version was garbage)

L2Complete is at least as much, if not more linear than the SCD version and is markedly worse in almost every respect.

I like RPGs with lots of classes or options.

It's literally not. An Action RPG is an RPG with action element. It has no actual important RPG gameplay features and thus is very obviously not an action based RPG. It's solidly a classic example of Action Adventure. There is no reason at all to try to shoehorn it into a genre it does not actually represent when it's already an excellent example of the one it is.

I don't, but I see why you might. Perhaps you'd enjoy FF5 more with the Four Job Fiesta? That is a challenge in the FF5 community where you are asked to roll 4 characters, each of a random role, and to never switch from these jobs, ever. FF5 is perfectly beatable with any single-job character solo (except Berserker) and considering how many jobs there are, a party of 4 is just a treat.

What I liked from 1 and 3 is that regardless of the character, the appearance for a job would be the same.
In 5 the jobs system is really good and has some great combos, but it really bugs me that the iconic design of the black mage is disrupted by faris' purple hair, or the ninja is now an old man. I like encarnations of classes rather than characters. The exception would be FF6 since every character embodies their class pretty well.
It's also a shame that the final overpowered classes of FF3 never made an appearance again.
I think the permanent class thing would be ok if you had like 16 or so jobs to pick from, you knew what their base stats were and they were more or less balanced.

Dragon Quest V is an all-time favorite (as in, my third favorite game of all time) but I prefer the DS version of it just for the faster walking, party chat, four party members at once, and other things
I have played both though, and a bit of the PS2 version, but I never completed that version since I greatly prefer playing JRPGs on handhelds

Other good 80s/90s JRPGSs:
Final Fantasy V is easily my second favorite one, and probably my 10th/11th favorite game of all time. I'm a sucker for class systems.
Final Fantasy VI is great
Final Fantasy III on the Famicom is actually really cool. Great music. I dislike the DS/PSP version since it has shitter music/graphics and you can't pretend your characters are gangsta rappers
IDK if Fire Emblem counts but Fire Emblem 4 is the bomb
Tactics Ogre too
Live A Live is neat

Zelda is closer to a classic top down JRPG than action adventure games like Tomb Raider. It has elements of action adventure, but overall it's more of an ARPG. One of the main reasons is the emphasis on story.

Top down perspective doesn't mean anything, it's the same as pointing out there are shops and dialogue. All that stuff is ancillary. Tomb Raider is mostly a 3D platformer.

Also, not that I think story is an important gameplay marker, emphasis on story is as more a marker of Adventure Game than it is RPG. Both are video game adaptations of tabletop roleplaying games. The Adventure genre of King's Quest, Zork etc took the narrative storytelling puzzle and character interaction side of things. The RPG genre focused on the stats and combat mechanics, classes, party strategy etc. Also take note the names are arbitrary and vague as it is with almost all genre names.

>BTW I'm looking to replay FF1, can anyone think of a more interesting party to play than this?
Caster-heavy parties are generally fairly unique in FF1 considering that Fighters are the best class, with the second spot going to Red Mages, so you're certainly going for something interesting here, no doubt.

I consider rpg's to be my favorite genre yet I can't bring myself to play one that doesn't allow some form of customization, the more the better really.

FF6 is a pretty good example, you have a really large cast of playable characters, all with a unique mechanic of some kind, furthermore depending on what summons you equip them with they learn different magic and gain different stats, then you have accessories which can do some fairly unique things and most importantly the game splits the party often so you have plenty of chances to actually use these characters.

It's not a perfect game but I find it gives you plenty to do in regards to tinkering with your stats, there are fewer and fewer rpg's that allow such things, so I'm excited whenever one pops up.

A small peeve of mine is when you get characters that are incredibly single-focused, say you get 2 tank characters in the game, they truly tank with every facet of their stats but are useless in other capacities. I'm already screwed if I like the look\personality of both of them because party wise you only want 1 and also it doesn't allow room for me to play them as a DPS for instance.

>What is your favorite RPG?

I don't have one specific choice only.
I like FF6, 8, 12, Megami Tensei series, NWN, BG2 and TO: LUCT.

>Do you prefer customization with jobs and lots of characters, or linear progression where every character learns one thing after another and you can't change their path?

would rather have the first option, however it's important to note that linear progression has its perks if the narrative and gameplay is good enough. The Witcher series does that quite well. I'd still would play something like Dark Souls over that any day because I hate games that try to be more movie than game.

>Do you prefer action RPG or traditional RPG?

it just depends on the battle system and the overall gameplay but action is usually still better, also in the case of active turn-based combat. purely turn-based can be a total snooze fest but I think ToEE does that best.

personally I like the FF2, FF6, 7(? haven't played it yet) or 8 class solution best. there are no fucking classes anymore. just go nuts with a skill-based system. I like that better than forcing roles in FF3 and 5 but I'd probably prefer FF1 if I can't have the skill-based system rather than meme classes and meme limitations.

>> No.5648551

>>5648443
Are 8 and 5 so different? You have what? 4 slots for commands but you have to learn the commands first and then equip them in whatever order you want. In 8 you learn it from GF's, in 5 you need to level up a job. I forget if 3 had a passive system or not.

the big difference is that different jobs grant entirely different playstyles and tools, which is why so many people love to replay it. With GFs the only real customizing you do to differentiate your party is junctioning - and any GF can junction any magic as far as I recall.

>> No.5650063

>>5650043
Oh, I see. The thing with GF's is that each one has a different list of things they learn. You CAN get every GF to junction any magic, that much isn't default behavior but is trivial to achieve, the main thing they provide is unique commands that can't be transferred.

Ifrit allows you to use the Mad Rush command which casts berserk on your entire party, Leviathan has a party heal, etc. So if you wanted to make a physically offensive character with some healing in 5 you would choose a main-job, sub-skillset and then 2? appropriate passives. In 8 you would make sure the right gf's are junctioned and then choose 4 appropriate commands.

So 5 is certainly more restrictive if you look at a single job but as a whole they're both pretty free-form. 8 has extra utility with junctioning magic to specific stats, whereas 5 actually has an equipment system that add unique interactions.

The biggest offender in the series for me is 9, it has the illusion of choice and freedom but in reality you only decide between 3 or so passive per character, since you have enough points to get the rest of them. It's a wonderful game but I was let down by how stringent it was mechanically.

The strange thing to me is why every single new jRPG doesn't have it as a feature, it should just be a part of the genre by now, include an auto option for traditional players and you're set.
