Most Sony monitors are well built, and will usually only need a cap replacement after long-term use like most other CRTs. IIRC, a bunch of BVMs in particular record how many hours a monitor has, so that may come in handy.

Plenty of them, especially in the mid 90 and late 90s use the exact same jungle ICs as their S, V, FS, and FV models, and are equally as moddable. A good portion of the ones from say, 96 or so onward should be moddable for Component as well, though I haven't went through the manuals to actually document specifically which ICs they use yet.

Okay guys, help me with a CRT for 128 bits/6th gen with component cables.

I know it's not retro, but this is the best topic for it.

I was thinking about buying a CRT TV that can output 480p for Gamecube, Widescreen 480p (EDTV) for Wii and a TV that supports 720p/1080i for Xbox and Dreamcast.

Also, I wanted to use this CRT for retro games in retro consoles.

So far so good, I could go with Plasma, LCD or a HD CRT.

But the problem is... HD CRT are hard to find, and a 4:3 480p TV are nearly impossible too.

Since they're HD CRT tvs, I don't think it has visible scanlines, does it?

So, I was thinking about going with a high end OLED TV for these consoles. And keep a CRT for anything 5th or less.

I don't remember the Gen 6 consoles/Wii using the artfacts of the scanlines/TV to produce graphics, like, let's say, dithering or using the TV's natural bloom to make stuff shiny. Or the use of Scanlines to make things look better.

So... how good a High-end OLED TV (choosing OLED because of the deep darks) is compared to a 4:3 480i CRT, and how does it compares to a 16:9 EDTV for the 6th gen?

As far as I know the tvs that supports 480p are really high resolution, so you can't really see the scanlines, so I guess it wouldn't make a difference in consoles of 6th with component cables.. Thank you very much.

Dreamcast does 240p/480i without VGA, and only up to 480p with compatible games on VGA.

Pre-2003 4:3 CRT HDTVs that fit all three criteria are common in the US (though native/non-scaled 720p is uncommon outside of specialized monitors), so unless you're in another country I don't know why you're having trouble finding any.

It's probably very good for its age, but there are plenty of newer models with other ways of getting RGB or YPbPr into them. I wouldn't tie myself only to displays that have physical SCART connectors, especially in the US. Late '90s-early 2000s non-HD models with component input are pretty common.

I play GCN/Wii stuff at 480p on a 34xbr960 and it's perfect, same for cable TV content at 1080i and PS3 at 480p/1080i. PS2 I prefer at 480i on a smaller SD display.

Of the three HD crts I've personally used, the 960 is the best/most ideal for modern stuff since HDMI + great huge widescreen tube. I also used a Toshiba 4:3 that gave a great cable tv picture over component at 1080i but would have strange sync issues during high motion content, and a DVI-D port that let me hook up a PC to it although it never looked exactly right no matter what resolution it was set to. Also had a Panasonic Tau 4:3 set that only accepted 480p/1080i over component, no 720p acceptance at all, but otherwise had a dynamite picture.

Your Toshiba sounds like a 2003 model. That was the year they started supporting 720p (through scaling) and DVI. The 2002 models were the last great models for 6th gen, other than flat tube-related geometry (I had two). Panasonic never supported 720p before they stopped making CRT TVs IIRC.

Well I've seen similar issues and it were the image was tilted to one side, that was resolved my wiggling the yoke a bit to make it project straight again.

That sort of burn-in on a CRT, where you can see the after image with the power off, takes years and years of displaying the same image non-stop. The kind of damage you're talking about only typically happened in studios or companies that displayed the same datasheet on the same screen for 5-10 or more years, 12 hours a day or so.

Sometimes when I view images of a CRT there's these strange, distorted bands all over its screen, they seem to come and go depending on the size of an image. Those aren't supposed to be there, are they? I'm not viewing the image correctly if those appear?

Funny story behind this tv, my wife for some goddamn reason rescued it for me. She saw it in a cardboard recycling container at the manufacturing plant she works at, and pulled some strings with the maintenance people there who were absolutely puzzled why anybody would want it, she said the oldest fucker there said she was stupid for taking it, that it was the lunchroom TV for several decades. But she got it, and its gotten a good home since then.
When I did get it I popped it open and aside from dust, I am happy I didnt see any cockroaches or signs of them chilling in there.
Was probably the find of my lifetime anyway, I doubt I will ever be able to find some of the higher quality sets that are shown here often, not without paying a limb. At least I can know I have something functioning and beautiful in its own right.

Question for some CRT pros: I was moving a Silent Scope arcade monitor that was out of the cabinet and accidentally cracked the rear of the tube, releasing the vacuum inside and rendering the monitor useless. I've seen videos of people swapping in tubes from normal TVs into the monitor chassis and it works fine. I always thought the tubes from TVs and monitors were somehow different, but I didn't have any information to support that claim.

Can I just find a 27" TV and replace the arcade tube with it? Anyone did this before?

How do DOS games look on a 19" 0.22mm pitch shadow mask? Looking to pick one up for $10 and I will be using it for more modern things as well. Just wondering if it's a complete mess and I should keep looking for an older and smaller monitor as well. Haven't had a PC CRT for probably 15 years.

I still use my 19" Sylvania PC CRT to this day. For retro and modern games alike. It's pretty nice, specially considering you can overclock the refresh rate. I can hit 720p at 120Hz and games look really nice even though it's 720p. In fact, this is how I played RE2R, DMCV and Sekiro.
Also, I don't have any sources, but when it comes to PC CRTs shadow mask appears to be sharper than aperture.

I want a crt PC monitor to emulate old systems at 240p, but the most commonly found monitors in my area are synch masters, like the 997df, is this a good monitor for my goal? Also, I think it is supposed to be a shadow mask monitor, that means I wouldn't get thick scanlines? It is weird, pic related is from a synchmaster 1100df and has pretty sharp scanlines even if it's a shadow mask monitor, can I get similar results?

Pretty much all VGA CRTs are going to be silly sharp at 240p. Problem is, you'd need to run it at 120Hz which will kill the motion quality. I think 480p60 looks nicer.

Ghosting mainly yeah. A lot of people even reckon shadow mask VGA monitors are sharper than AG so the scanlines will be very thick even at 480p on most tubes. You could use black frame insertion but I think 480p60 again looks better overall than 240p120 with BFI.

I think a vga monitor is my best bet, my pvm 2030 just died yesterday and a replacement here goes for about $200, I have the money for a new pvm in the price range, but I can instead just shell out like $20 for a 19 inch vga monitor and use the rest of the money for an extron. I have been telling people if they have available HDMI to use a Tendak hdmi to vga. For the price there is no downside to it. No crushed blacks, no processing at all, supports 1600x1200 @85hz or lower resolutions at even higher refresh.

Has 3.5mm audio output as well if you need it. Can be converted to tons of setups or ignored and use audio from pc.

I was looking into getting a 19 inch crt monitor, I found a nice looking syncmaster 997df, but seller now says that it has a problem, It apparently consumes a lot of energy and has a whining noise, or something like that, is that a bad sign, or is it easily fixable? The ferrite core/flyback can deteriorate and create vibrations when old and beat up. However it could be that the person is trying to run it at too high a resolution and refresh rate that is causing vibration from magsat. Some people see 'max supported res' and 'max supported refresh' and always run that, even if it looks better at a lower resolution the monitor can decently handle.

No downsides if the adapter actually works properly. The Tendak HDMI will look exactly the same but the adapter will work with future cards or other HDMI devices, and supports more resolutions and things that DVI-I has issues with.

If you use a Gsync monitor the DVI will also bring up more issues. But The HDMI isn't free of those either when paired with a Gsync monitor.

If your goal is that you will be really let down. You might want to do some more research.

31hz isn't a thing. Analog sets usually come in two types, a PC crt like the Syncmaster is 31khz. It has particular resolutions it will look the best with and doing anything but an exact multiple of the refresh rate of the game you are playing would be wasted (so run 60hz games at 60hz and 50hz at 50hz) If you DO want it higher, you NEED an exact multiple of 50 or 60 (the games refresh rate) so 100 or 120, but I doubt the monitor can do 120@ a low res, since not all of them can go that high.

Just stick with 60hz, and use higher for pc games that can do them like Quake 3. Find the resolution the monitor was meant to run and run it at that.

i've never seen a vga monitor that can't do 240p@120hz since it's a 31khz signal and none seem to limit the vertical refresh rate lower than 120. even my 14" monitor from 1994 can do it. most monitors look terrible when doing 240p like this, the scanlines are way too big and you can see every individual pixel resulting in some terrible aliasing. it's better to run 480p or 1440p with filters.

I have slight burn in on my crt. It's noticeable on lighter colors but I see a thin vertical line on the right side of the screen. Not sure how it happened since I dot't play any games with menus that are on the screen for long or anything.

It can accept PAL60 with some fiddling with H hold and height controls. Speaker works with audio on either input pin on the DIN so I suspect it's mixing to mono at least for the internal speaker, which sounds fine, nothing amazing.
