I just started playing HD, how do you replenish your ammo? I've seen pistol guys dropping clips, but apart from that and ammo boxes scattered around are you seriously supposed to just pick up guns from dead guys and unload them one by one? When I first played I accidentally picked up like 10 shotguns and got completely overencumbered because I didn't understand the inventory system.

There's some steps to it, you gotta make sure to set up your binds first too.

You need to pick up guns and remove their ammunition, then ditch the empty guns. Magazines will need to be refilled to be reused again.
The ZM66 is a pic related and ammunition is usually pretty plentiful, so I would advise against trying to bother with manually refilling magazines and what not, unless you're direly lacking in ammo, because that will make the gun misbehave.

In Hideous Destructor, is there any difference between the Bullpup version of the Liberator, and the non-Bullpup version? Or is it merely a sprite flavor thing?

Also, I often see people not taking grenade launchers on their rifle loadouts. Is this because it adds extra weight or recoil? Or is it just because they don't use it?

>> No.5643479

>>5643476
Long lib has better recoil control, but it's far heavier and the barrel will bump against walls in tight spaces. You'll also NEVER find long libs out in the wild, only bullpups.
and yeah grenade launchers on rifles adds more weight. I don't mind it though.

The chainsaw isn't useless, it's just situational.
It's excellent against pinkies, and if you can get a good chokepoint somewhere, you can seriously take down an entire horde of them, taking little damage, if any at all.

Looking also at pain elementals, it's almost ideal for them sometimes, because getting close up in the face of them means you're blocking their spawns, so while you're there you might as well split that meatball.

E1 is probably the weakest, and I don't say that lightly, because it's pretty good.
E2 is my favorite of the original episodes, it hits all the right notes in terms of atmosphere and adventure feeling.
E3 fits right above E1, it's also good, and I like the novel visuals it has, but it's just not the strongest.
E4 and E5 I think will have to share a tier, because I like both of them for very similar reasons, they fit right under E2.

FWIW, I think that until Sigil, Romero's best Doom maps were the ones he made for Doom 2.

Should have buffed the regular shotgun to shoot 10 pellets instead (and increase spread slightly so the pellet density stays the same).

Why does the first response to balance requests are always nerfs?

In a certain online game I'm playing there are several vehicles for transportation. One has a speed ability that allows it to get to objectives faster, while others have better combat abilities. The faster one ends up being used every time while the others are mostly ignored.
Developers attempt at fixing it was to remove the speed up ability altogether.

The only episode that can be ranked around the same tier as Sigil is E1. It has polished, good design too, and fun, fast paced play as well. It however doesn't have Sigil's depth, levels overall tend to blend together, especially around the middle. The gameplay was smoother though, so there are valid reasons to put it ahead.

Ranking E2 ahead is a sign of poor taste. E2 is not that bad, the crate maze level is great, and the horror level with fake exit is interesting, but the Wolf3D tier flat design, the questionable Sandy texturing drags it well below E1/E5. M1, M3, M9 are full of garbage too.

Ranking E3 or E4 higher is flat out trolling. E3 is an ugly, boring set of levels that look like were made in 2 hours. E3M2 was the worst offender to FPS mapping ever.

E4 is just a clusterfuck of fanmaps with no style and fucked up difficulty. The only good thing here is E4M6, but even that is more or less on the same level as Sigil's secret map, and below others.

Hating Sigil is just frustrated trolling, because Romero is still relevant, while (You) aren't.

I kind of did that but I put them all into individual folders with each folder having the proper title of the mod/total conversion as well, some having multiple versions, and getting the soundtracks for those that have them. Also included every single version of every Doom game ever made on any engine, alpha, demo, and console port ever released, system emulators for those ports where appropriate, the Doom movie, and every Doom novel ever written for good measure. Did the same thing for Quake and most other games in the OP's MEGA, including every patch, update, remake, Steam, GOG, and every single retail version and up-to-date extension available, notable mods, and my Quake folder ended up at about 250gb. But I was waiting until I finish doing this for every game in the OP's MEGA + a few more before posting it here. This is taking a long time because hunting down every version of things like Outlaws takes a while and I added a few more like every piece of Tomb Raider media ever made.

NBlood has better colors and looks better than BuildGDX. Also feels good to use, but has more problems with the actual gameplay than BuildGDX. Depends which is more important for you.
Also DOSBox isn't nearly as bad as everyone says when you configure it correctly using all the right patches and use BuildMFX (not bMouse). Use pcgamingwiki to set it all up and use that if you want vanilla.
Honestly at this point Fresh Supply is an option. Version 1.9.6 isn't bad, the movement feels fantastic, better than any other source port, and it looks nicer too.

But really DOSBox when set up right is not bad for vanilla and Fresh Supply is good for a smooth experience.

LOL. On the contrary, I've found Sigil to be an episode best approached slowly because it simply doesn't even try to force player into playing aggressively and even punishing that by regularly dropping roadblocks like baron/cacodemon in hallway barely fitting for you & doorway demon of author's choice. In general while Sigil looks pretty nice, gameplay wise it feels like experimental D1 wad from the 90's: some neat ideas but most of it is just mediocre or bad.

I'm not gonna hate on Sigil. As limiting and frustrating as some of its harder sections can be, I still found the motivation to play all the way through it, which is a lot more than I can say for most of the last 5 years or so of wads where the in-style thing has been circle strafe arenas with large monster counts.

On top of that, the biggest problem is people going for Ultra-Violence for their first playthrough, and then insisting that any difficulty they encounter is the mapper's fault and not their own lack of skill. UV should not be the baseline. People need to learn to ditch this idea that they play on UV or not at all.

Plenty of text files for mods just say "lol" or "kill yourself" in them and that's it.

>Why aren't you using ZDL?
I just type 'wads' into my terminal and I get this screen, ready to Doom.

I prefer using gzdoom.ini's Autoload feature for the generic stuff I always use, and then just load the rest of the stuff quick from the command line, it works out for me. Besides, I'm on Linux, so ZDL isn't available to me - and even if it was, it's still faster to load stuff from the CLI than clicking around a GUI.

Since the grand majority of things I have in this collection are done, I don't really have an issue with renaming them to their full name (or close to), and since I'm always getting the last version available I don't really worry to mark them as "final" or anything like that. For the few exceptions that are works in progress, I just overwrite the previous file when I see the news.

Since I'm compiling fairly famous or well-loved WADs, their .txt's are all pretty standard and helpful for archiving, haven't found any meme "kys" ones yet in these.

When and if exceptions present themselves, I deal with them accordingly - but for now, this system has proven to be rather fast and easy for me

As someone who's been playing pwads for roughly 20 years now, Sigil honestly felt like a love letter to 90's era mapping to me. Back then, it wasn't uncommon for maps to be slow-paced and puzzly. Unfortunately that style of gameplay is rare nowadays, with modern wads tending to favor fast-paced run n gun action (I do enjoy this style too, for the record). This is perhaps why a lot of people have been frustrated with Sigil's gameplay not meeting their expectations.

It’s a simple cosmetic change that makes the HUD fill the bottom portion of the screen instead of showing the green brick background. I recall the mod coming with a few widescreen friendly PWAD huds, don’t remember what specific WADs though.

doomguy can straferun at 23.57 units per tic

the usual conversion is 16 units = 1 foot (this makes a 64x64 teleport pad 4 feet on a side, which feels about right)

23.57 units/tic * 35 tics/sec = 825 units/sec
825 units/sec / 16 units/foot = 51.5 feet/sec

Vaseline mod seems completely wiped by Bethesda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59GITAx4R00

He stated that he had included freedoom iWADs, not original iWADs or Maps of Chaos.

So even freedoom can't save from the copyright law. If the mod looks modern/fancy and uses Doom name they would still shut it down.

how to avoid copyright striking:
- don't repackage the original doom assets while bethesda's still distributing them
- don't try and push it as something "official" that is emblazoned with id's logo
- don't start passing around faked pictures of it being put in stores and being sold for money
- make it a mod that requires the original to run instead of a standalone full game package

it's not that hard

That gets complicated though. Even outside of something like "what is a Lost Soul? Does that mean there are such things as souls? If so, whose are they, and how do they get to hell?", the demons are clearly attached to Christian or Christian-adjacent perceptions of Satanic magic and evil - they use pentagrams for portals, have cities named Limbo or Dis, and there's even a big upside down cross in E2M1 that hurts you if you stand in it.

I think I remember hearing that the Doom novels interpret the demons as just aliens that choose to use human concepts of demons and magic to present themselves, which seems similar to what you're saying.

Here's my shitty headcanon:

Inferno (or Hell) is an amalgam of all the world the demons have conquered over the ages
Any world they conquer get added to the hellscape, expanding it. The space and time themselves get bent and twisted in there, so you may not notice how you left one world and entered another. Abundance of teleporters doesen't help, as well as the fact that you can reach the worlds that are in the process of being assimilated into the hellscape, but didn't quite made it there yet
Which is why Doomguy can revisit same places in multiple times and see them populated after massacre, as well as travel to other worlds in wads

Living creatures have souls, that may consist of (not all creatures posess all layers) :
1) indestructible Core, that stores results of all prior lives and evolves as the soul goes on through cycle of life-death-rebirth
2) prana layer - that anchors soul to a body and gives it "reality", permeats and binds together all other layers to the core
3) Emotion layer
4) Memory layer
5) Consciousness layer
6) Magical layer (permeats all other layers, but is not bound to the core, may be lost/acquired during reincarnation). Generates magic during interaction with Emotion and Consciousness layers
7) Divine layer - no mortal creature has it, having it saves memory layer during reincarnation, grants divine powers (but not knowledge on how to use them). Can be acquired when mortal creature ascends to immortality (for that it needs to have achieved a great feat, and have faith of significant amount of other people directed at them during that, as well as posession of significant mount of magic or powerful magical artefacts)

Stuff like plants may have only first 2 layers, complex animals - first 4, plus sometimes 6th. People - first 5 (sometimes 6). Spirits don't have 2nd layer, and can only achieve materiality with magic. Ghosts are remnants of 3,4,5 and rarely 6th layers that were cast off when person passed away, and so on

Demons do not have the core, thus they don't have a proper "soul". They have "Essence" instead, that consists of same basic layers sans the core. They hunt down creatures with proper souls to devour and replenish essense. High rank demons can also empower their essense with souls, as well as create lesser demons by splitting a soul in parts (1 soul can create a couple hundreds of lesser demons).
When that Essence is gone, demon cease to be. However they are not bound to the flesh like mortals, and can occupy a body provided they can subdue its original host (or if it has no host when posessed). They can also create bodies with demonic magic to avoid dissolving over time, or getting consumed by other demons.

Lost Souls are a most basic and cheap body a demon can create, thus weaker demons usually get by in them, until they can find a better host to posess or create. Demonic comanders may assign a demon to be a Pain Elemental to provide Lost Soul templates for fallen demons to inhabit, so they don't slack off in immaterial form after defeat.

Demons can empower their bodies with demonic magic/rituals and sheer will if they are powerful enough.
While their bodies do have basic meat and "organs", none of them are "vital", and demon can cling to a body until roughly 40% of it loses integrity, at which point demonic essense leaves it to search a new host. This makes them highly resistant to bullets that do not damage flesh enough, so cutting their bits off with melee or explosives, or melting them with plasma is always a better solution.
Demon slayers disrupt or capture released essences to prevent demons from coming back, and also to fuel their own abilities.

Goddamn do I love E4M1. I love that little puzzlebox of a map where every shell counts and every mistake adds up. The only thing I'd count as a problem is the one-way wall with shotgunners behind it, only because the only other time that one-way walls are even shown in Doom 1 (that I remember) is the secret in E1M1, so it's pretty fucked up to introduce the concept with hitscanners that can singlehandedly shred you on UV on a map with no health in it. Because only males play aggressive gunfight killing games, but female minded people love artistic creativity more, and Doom's beautiful artistic texture set is a perfect soil for artistic creativity.

Let my explain my shitty canon.
Hell it's like another universe /dimension with laws, nature, logic unique to its own and different from our universe, in this universe magic exists as some sort of energy that can do wonders but it's fairly natural for demons, that's why you see so much symbols and rituals in hell those are all powerful ways to conjure said energy or to use it in a certain way, the upside down cross may be a just a magical rune, the pentagrams also ways to bend that energy at the demons will, for us merely symbols for them powerful tools.
Also we can conclude by how the bases and earth change by the demonic presence that hell itself it's invasive and expands if in contact with another dimension or the demons do that by using magic in anyway it's obvious that said magic can create portals between dimensions and that demons use it to expand "hell " between multiple realities, which makes hell freaking huge.
We can also imagine that it's not the first time hell and earth may have been in contact, demons may have already been in our reality before that's why trough history you had tales of monsters and evil spirits causing chaos and all the heroes, prophets and messiahs are like proto doom guys, Jesus may have learned how to gather "hell magic " and use it to banish the demons that's why in our reality the symbolism and rituals against "evil " exists but our world simply doesn't have the magic to cause any impact so they useless in our reality . Another thing that makes me believe demons knew about us is the fact that the invasion of the moon bases and earth looks coordinated and its obviously organized by the strongest demons they hadbeen watching us playing with the portals waiting for a mistake
>do souls exist ?
I don't know, but in my opinion they don't go to hell. Hell it's a pretty physical /material place demons have huge guts, organs, blood and can be killed. Hell is a living nightmare not a metaphysical one

The 'wads' thing is actually a very simple (but long) alias, it's not a script.

HOWEVER, this is a short bash script I just whipped up that actually makes things even easier for me.

Then I just made a second alias that calls up both the wad list and the script above in one swoop.

You don't have to store audiodata, as all of them can be described with math, thus allowing waveform-programmed music track to fit in less than 1kb, which is kinda important for a 64/128 and so on kb games.

The thing with Cyberdemons is that they need to be used intelligently to be a threat. He fires volleys of explosives that can reach really far, that counts for something if he's placed well.

He's actually not well used in E2M8, because it's a wide open area and he's super easy to deal with, he's far better used as a sort of 'artillery support' for other monsters, or you have multiple of them chasing you through a large arena full of cover, meaning there's safe spots, but only for a short while and you have to keep moving, or they'll find you.
He's also good for area denial, like putting him at the end of a long corridor, and trying to go down that corridor is dangerous as there's very little room to dodge his missiles.

The Last Temptation album also had some music sort of like Brutal Planet and Dragontown, then the later Eyes Of Alice Cooper and Along Came A Spider albums too.

His 80s stuff is slightly more conventional heavy metal (though his love for horror and theatrics was always there), and then there's all manner of weird stuff going further back, including all sorts of old hippie rock, and weird stuff he did while either blind drunk or high off his tits on cocaine (he outright doesn't remember recording three of his albums, referring to them as his Blackout Albums).

To be slightly more on topic for Doom, here's a track for Plutonia:

Yeah, not retro, but I'm stoked they're using the classic design.
