"PSX" is a stupid and incorrect term and must never be used in reference to the Sony Playstation video game system

>> No.5637176

>>5637175
It's PSX. Sony even styled it as the PSX. The PS1 doesn't exist, the PSone is just a slim PSX, released when the PS2 was out - hence the one. PSX

I know the devkit refers to it as PS-X internally, but the console was never officially referred to as the PSX, outside of maybe prerelease promotional stuff. The abbreviation stuck around for whatever reason though, even my dad was calling it the PSX.
When I first heard about the PSX DVR from an issue of Game Informer around 2003/2004, I was a bit confused at first, since we always used to call the original PlayStation PSX.

I think it’s a regional nomenclature thing. Where I lived it was just called “the playstation”, but then when PS2 came out everyone called it “the PS1”. My first time ever hearing the term psx was when I was reading an article about the PS2 dvr in Japan called the PSX. I never heard of someone calling a PS1 a PSX until coming to this site. I have seen that over in the UK magazines were calling it that, so I think a lot of Britt posters here call it that.

These posts are both true. The main reason the PSX name persists today is because Western magazines of the time used it often both before and after the system's release.

The PS1 name became popular after the announcement (but before the release) of both the PS2 and the PSone (the mini console).

The PSX DVR's name confused some people in a similar way that the Xbox One's name did: People had been using that unofficial name for something else and the manufacturer was effectively saying "it was never really meant to be called that and now we're officially using that name for something else"

Almost everyone called it a PSX back then if for no other reason than it rolls off the tounge better than just PS. And the term PS1 wasn't really used yet because people didn't expect the next system to just be called PS2, system names tended to be more creative back then.

>> No.5637456 [DELETED]

Ok so PSX was the name for the system early on. Like the early years 94/95/96. Sony probably didnt like that the videogame magazines called it the PSX. I actually like PSX. It sounds more intriguing than playstation. Which sounds downright idiotic whe you think about it. So i will continue to call it the PSX. Just because PSX sounds nice. PSX has a nice ring to it. I am talking about the PlayStation, and its internal designation/moniker of being PSX, which was a potential name for the US release of the sony system. The "PSX" you are referring to happened 7-8 years after the release of the original PlayStation.....long after many of us (myself included) refer to it as the PSX. It was called "The Nintendo", and then "The Original Nintendo" after the SNES came out. No one called the Game Boy "The Nintendo Game Boy", nor the "NGB". Everyone in this thread is an autistic moron pretending to have lived when these systems were out.

The original Playstation was abbreviated "PSX" and spoken "Playstation." The written and spoken abbreviation "PS1" did not come into common usage until well after the PS2 was released, and when you think about it with half a brain that makes sense because without a PS2 you would not call something PS1. No one spoke it as "PSX" because it has the same amount of syllables as "Playstation."

The original Nintendo Entertainment System was abbreviated "NES" and spoken "Nintendo." Again when you think about this for half a second, since it was the only Nintendo system in existence at the time, it was the "Nintendo." And since "NES" has the same amount of syllables, no one called it by its written abbreviation.

It's also worth pointing out that the internet had a very tiny reach prior to '98 when fixed-rate ISP costs caught on and still would reach a minority of PlayStation users after that anyway.

The only time I ever saw 'PSX' was on the covers of magazines, or the one time i saw it in an AOL chat. I actually remember asking the guy 'what does the 'X' stand for' and he said "idk lol'

Never ever once heard 'PSX' spoken.

I was 20 when the PlayStation launched and many of the people in my classes and that I hung out with me included referred to it as PSX. Personally I think because it rolls off the tounge better.
