>Here’s some extremely startling news that affects all users of mnemo’s USB-GDROM (Dreamcast *ODE) and USB Host (3DO *ODE) products: The firmware will eventually “expire” and the device will be bricked.

>Seriously.

>This was first posted by Dreamcast fan @pcwzrd13 last August while watching a live stream from William Nash. During the stream at about the 8 minute mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuCaFn3RgH8)), William received a message when trying to launch a game that gave him the “Firmware Is Obsolete” error you see in the picture above. He was able to update the firmware and get it working again, but that means:

>Once the firmware “expires”, USB-GDROM is UNUSABLE!!! That means you’re not “purchasing a product”, you’re “renting” it for the duration of time mnemo supports the firmware. Also, there’s no indication on how the device expires. Does it use the Dreamcast’s internal clock? Does that mean if a current user changes the date to 2020, will their USB-GDROM stop working? What happens if someone then changes it back – Is it permanently bricked until after a “2020 firmware”?

1) CF is basically obsolete now, outside of a few people that still use them in older digital SLR cameras
2) CF is completely unwieldy and you can quite easily accidentally bend the pins on the connector port

I don't think you understand that you need an interface device that emulates the GDROM drive, something that reads the stored disc images and sends specific segments of data to the processing components of the Dreamcast. You can't just wire a storage device to the mainboard and expect the console to be able to just magically pull the specific bits of data it needs from it.

You would still need something in between to handle the GDROM calls and access the images. Using might streamline a part of the process but at this point the negatives are going to outweigh the convenience of using a newer standard considerably. CF makes sense in an ancient PC, but not here.

It's pretty simple to understand if you're familiar with both products - GDEmu guy is completely fucking incompetent. He can't remotely meet demand, his sale-style is a complete joke where you have to be waiting at his website at like 3am every 6 months for about 7 GDEmus to go on sale for a few minutes before they're gone, he refuses to hire anyone that might help him, I could go on.

mnemo on the hand is a blatant asshole, people knew that even before this, but DOES sell and ship his product out like a normal seller. On top of that it's also cheaper. It's a 'pick your poison' deal but was an absolute no-brainer for most people considering you can get one and can't get the other 99.9% of the time. This time bomb sounds like a godawful 'feature' but a lot of OP is scaremongering and theoreticals right now, the only thing to do is wait for a bigger picture to be unveiled.

Yeah, no. The very fact that mnemo is just now "removing" the time bomb from the firmware means he knows that this stuff is poison and doesn't want to totally kill off his future revenues from bad WoM.

Hardware should be unusable when it physically dies and not a moment sooner. Not even consumer unfriendly megacorps like Apple stoop low enough to time bomb the stuff they sell.

Microsoft's forced obsolescence and forced update strategies would draw the better comparison. The latest version of iOS supports phones going back to the iPhone 5S, a 2013 model. The last version of Android that is officially supported on Samsung's 2013 flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 3, is Lollipop from 2014/2015. Apple also does not force updates on any of their computer or phone operating systems or even perform piracy checks or require activation. Apple likes to lock you into their ecosystem, but they are not practitioners of forced obsolescence like other computing ecosystems. A time bomb from Microsoft or Google would be unlikely, to anyone familiar with either. A time bomb from Apple would be completely unthinkable, to anyone familiar with Apple.

If you are soldering or taking apart a console, even with guides, it's not unreasonable for that person to buy a cable and follow guides on how to dump the ROM. Despite that, you would only need one person in the community to do that and release a "fixed" ROM. (It sounds like this piece of hardware can receive firmware updates).

Apple pushes updates that slow your phone down.

Apple locks down their os and chips to not operate when replaced. Like if your screen breaks and you replace it with a working one, it doesnt work in the new situation.

>> No.5641623

>>5641557
>Apple pushes updates that slow your phone down.
They throttle performance along battery life curves by default to maintain a minimum battery life per charge threshold. When people complained about performance without understanding that, they provided a UI to expose the OS's battery health gauge they had been using and added a user toggle the setting. They also lowered the price of replacement batteries. When you have a fresh battery (not a new phone), the throttle doesn't engage. It was only ever enabled for old batteries, but everyone who complained about performance throttling ignored that part.

>screen breaks and you replace it with a working one
No, only if you replace it with a non-Apple one. I did say they liked locking you into their ecosystem, which includes repairs and authorized replacement parts. But not timebombs or forced obsolescence.

From what I'm reading mnemo admitted the 'expiry code' was put there to do counteract clone devices. It wasn't intended as a 'time bomb', that's a bit of a leap, it's there to force the end-user into performing a firmware update. You can't update the firmware at all on clone devices, so this fucks them over...at least in theory, from the sounds of it the clone devices makers got wise to it and it doesn't actually affect them at all.

This is really shitty on mnemo's part but nothing new in vidya, DRM basically always fucks over the actual customer before it gets anywhere near the pirates, in this case the clone buyers I suppose. RetroRGB are using this opportunity to scaremonger and sensationalize the whole situation far beyond what it actually is though, much like when flashcarts were 'guaranteed to fry your console' last year. This will be solved by owners dropping a file on their SD card, something everyone with one of these has done before, and we'll never hear of it again. It's not that big of a deal.

Wait, has USB-GDROM been cloned?

I came to the conclusion that this whole thing was a preventative measure in case that ever happened after seeing the GDEMU guy getting screwed over so hard. The USB-GDROMs all have a manufacturing date so it wouldn't be hard to blacklist certain batches so the unlock updates wouldn't work.

I honestly don't get the animosity towards the GDEMU guy. I bought one from him two years ago and it was a simple enough process. Just follow the blog and he posts an announcement about a week in advance, then just order on the right day.
