Are you aware that GLQuake and WinQuake were made and released alongside DOS quake by the same people? It is vanilla Quake, but for Windows. Both are "official" engines of the game, not really source ports. This was 1997.. I keep trying to like this fucking game and finding myself pissed off at how fucking slow this game seems to want me to play. The level design is rife with low-supply levels where you're supposed to whittle down spongey enemies with a shotgun or something at a leisurely pace or cramped hallways where you're supposed to whittle down a horde one at a time, but the game is a fucking BORE playing like that. You can do that, of course, and that's fun, but my point is that there's only some greenhairs and imps in Entryway, and they're pretty simple to handle with just the pistol and shotgun, or the chainsaw even.

>> No.5639891

>>5639880
But then you find every weapon super early, the progression each map clearly intends you to follow is gone, and the start of every map where they expect you to have a pistol and a shotgun at best is pathetic.

So the dilemma is either play the maps as they were actually balanced and intended or play the maps as slow dungeon crawlers until you can get something beyond the shotgun which can't quickly kill anything above an imp.

IMO as someone playing doom for the first time and having very mixed opinions on the gameplay, some of the modern lighting options and stuff in zdoom just don't look right. I tried out chocolate doom and had to go back because zdoom is just too convenient, but I much preferred the vanilla look.

Dated visuals are just part of the appeal of old games, frankly. There's a PC version of MGS1 and despite looking better than the PS1 version the whole thing just feels worse without the omni-present jaggies and fog of the console version.

"Intent" is meaningless here - they tested every map in pistol start, but they also programmed the game and ordered the maps to play continuously and have pistol starting only happen as a punishment if you die or if you hop to a level with a cheat. Both are valid ways to play the game.

I play everything pistol start, but if you're not having fun with it, just play continuous, especially because it sounds like this is your first time playing. It's truly not as game-breaking as you imagine it, especially in Doom 1 where you lose your weapons at the beginning of every episode. All it will do is let you have more choices immediately as opposed to finding those choices only through scouring for secrets, which seems to be what you're looking for.

It's like saying that Mega Man is meant to be played with the P-shooter only because they let your do it. Yes, you could, and people who have played the game for a long time do, but the game is designed to let you carry weapons over for a reason.

Alexander 'Eternal' is pretty recognized, he made Epic 2, which managed to take Eternal Doom's switch-hunting and make it actually kind of work.

There's also Lainos, who's actually one of my favorite mappers overall, he's made a whole bunch of highly atmospheric, large maps, all with this interconnected story of a bleak and dark apocalypse.

So it turns out that if you're willing to turn your Quake 2 into a blurry mess (and I can tolerate it due to way too many retro games lately), even a GTX 1070 with 8GB of RAM and an i7-6700 can raytrace this without too much strain on the FPS. I find a berserk in this next map, I pop it, clear some areas and then decide to chill in a quiet place to heal myself. I patch up with my medical kit. At this point, if I ride it out, I die. If I apply second flesh, I die. So what's the catch? Are you just not supposed to use Berserk unless you have supernatural healing with you?

I did it! Had to use two mid-level saves (I've been limiting myself to just one mid-level save per map for this megawad) but that was great. Hopefully the rest of Plutonia kicks my ass slightly softer than it's been the past three maps.

Use a stimpack before you use berserk. It'll reduce the withdrawal afterwards significantly. Stand still once it starts, too. You'll regenerate a little bit of HP which can be the difference between life and death.

I'm wondering how a community wad can interpret the NRFTL/ROTS visual style. It's very different from both classic id style and the modern community style. In fact I haven't seen anything that is even remotely similar to Castle's and Iwakura's visuals. The layouts are shaped in an 8 form, that means you always progress in a linear way but often reenter previous areas from different angles. Important secrets are visible from outside, switches always open doors that are in visible rangle, when you get key, the door is ahead of you. I want to see stuff with this approach.

It isn't even a universal thing to "vasyan" things, as that's a derogatory nickname for people who make and clamor for badly put together High-Definition mods.
There's still a bunch of Russians who make and play more normal Doom things, and they've put out some good maps over the years.
Epic 2 I think even was nominated for a Cacoward back in the day.

Some of the totally vasyan stuff you see in Russian modding and indie communities are ironic though and made as just complete shitposts.
If you look at Heroes 3 modding, some of that is shitposts, and a lot of the other stuff is pretty experimental, varying all over the place in quality (some stuff looks like garbage, some is so well made and authentic visually that you'd be mistaken for thinking it was official).
Also Vasyan as posted here is a troll persona, don't take his bait, just report.

Not particularly.

Make their behavior different somehow:
>maybe the monster run faster
>maybe he's got the +ALWAYSFAST flag, so he'll do ranged attacks very often while you're in his line of sight (this would make the basic shotgun baldie more dangerous than ever, for instance)
>maybe his ranged attack is homing
>maybe his ranged attack bounces against surfaces
>maybe his ranged attack is a moving projectile, but it's really fast and you need to be very proactive in dodging
>maybe his ranged attack is a +RIPPER
>maybe he teleports away for a second on his pain state
>maybe this type of monster cannot be tricked into infighting
>maybe he's highly resistant against bullets and shot and you need to use an explosive weapon on him to really damage him
>maybe he has some dangerous effect on death, such as exploding, and you need to run away when he does
>maybe he can't be killed unless you gib him (xdeath)

Not all of these at once, obviously, but there's some simple things you can do to make a monster a different kind of challenge. Having a decent chunk of health doesn't have to be a bad thing, but don't give a monster too much health, and don't rely on just his health value and damage value to make him dangerous.
Also I strongly recommend against using the +STEALTH flag, because it's difficult to make this kind of monster good and not just fucking annoying.

I never liked the nightmare variants of monsters from the console versions. Felt like a boring way of introducing tougher enemies.
Hell Knights from Doom 2 were fine, because adding in a weaker variant of the Baron allowed for more varied usage in encounters. Barons just simpy flat out had too much HP, likely due to the fact they were meant to be bosses for Doom E1.

I never understood why Civvie was so bothered by lost souls, they're easy.

The pain elemental can become a real bastard if you let him, but if you can get close enough to touch him you can block his spawns and make him absolutely helpless ("bully them and abort their children").
That said, the meatball is designed as a nuisance monster and sometimes he can really be one, you don't always get the luxury of being able to reach and block him, because he does fly.

I agree with you a bit, and while I'm a Doom 3 apologist, I also recognize its flaws and I think the game approached horror really badly.
The game relies way too much on jumpscares, and about an hour into the game there's been so many that you become used to them and expect them, and they become boring.

Going for a more horror direction wasn't a bad idea, but Doom 3 just didn't do it in a good way, and gameplay suffered for it.

The only good Doom II monster was the Hell Knight. I don't mind the Arachnotron but is this cliche looking mecha brain truly belongs to this game? I mean it's about daemons and zombies, not mecha brains. Mancubi are ok as well, but it was a Duke Nukem type alien, again not for this game. The other four are absolutely worthless bastardization of classic gameplay.

I imagine it's people with shitty and dark CRT monitors who constantly have glare, but instead of doing something about the glare (turning off the lights, closing the windows), they just compensate by upping the gamma in the game.

You see this in a bunch of old screenshots on Doomworld's Newstuff Chronicles, and ZDaemon is set up that way by default, hence some people call it ZDaemon Gamma.

I like the PE too. The largest area of player decision making in Doom is movement, with every enemy requiring a certain kind of movement pattern to deal with. Because you can stop the PE from spawning if you keep close, encounters with one in the mix can force the player to instantly sprint right at it, which is a movement that no other monster calls for and can throw the player into a more dangerous situation than how they would ideally take it. If they can't reach it, then it takes almost immediate target priority because any time wasted is time it can spawn more souls. They're like archviles in that they're a sort of wildcard monster where the player has to rethink an encounter as a whole because of the unique complication they bring - PEs are basically a timer that's added to each fight.

Another thing from a different anon: graphic fidelity should be universal across the board.

High res textures do not look good on low polygon surfaces, same as low-res textures look like smeared shit on high-poly models.
Unless they are highly stylised (some N64 games like dr Slump and MML)

In case of BethFallouts/TES texture mods usually go hand in hand with better models and other graphic overhauls.

Models literally can't look good in an engine designed for 8 rotation sprites, unless the actors themselves are completely rewritten to accomodate the models.

The fact that animators of the models suck cock and can't grasp the concept of weight behind movement, you end up with shit like moonwalking floaty pinkies, skating zombies and all that kind of trash.

You may covere a low effort turd in a glitter of special effects, it will remain a turd anyway.

Then the power disparity for damage should be a bit larger. I'd suggest toning down the pistol's damage.
>I guess i'm gonna nerf the damage of the ssg a little bit but ill see what i can do there
So long as it's both faster and stronger there is no reason to use the shotgun, especially when the chaingun is an amazing and ammo efficient sniper.

You could also add it to everything, don't get me wrong.

I don't think it was four years though, the recharging sword meter automatically giving the sword back for free wasn't added until last year with the big v1.0 update. In the older days the sword just vanished and you had to eat up a shitload of mana to get it back. Those older versions of GMOTA suck.

There are numerous viruses that hide away real files on your USB, and put visible .exe files with folder icons on them, that launch the virus body with admin rights (giving it access to your system) and then open the hidden directory/file to pretend that nothing bad ever happened.

These things when launch set your PC up for botnetting.

Set your folder settings to always show hidden files, and to always display arrow for shortcuts, as well as always display file extension.

If you notice a USB with this, scan that PC ASAP. It is possible that it's already part of a botnet.

A4Tech XL-755bk
25$
9 programmable buttons (advertises 10, but 10th is a mode switch)
5 modes with customizable DPI (up to 3000), poll rates (up to 1000hz)and separate sets of scripts for each buttton
The script language can be simple for basic tasks, like repeated;y pressing on several points of the screen in successsion, but can also be quite robust with cycles, "ifs" and some basic math.
Scripts stored on board, so they will work even on a different PC.
Has a good braided cord.
The build quality is on the cheaper side, obviously, but cleaning its insides once or twice a year will make it serve for quite a while. Mine served me for over 6 years already.

There's also X-755bk version (without L in XL) - it has non-braided cord and worse DPI. Slightly cheaper (22$ for X vs 25$ for XL)
