The Sonic franchise might have stayed good if it's fanbase weren't literal diaper shitting manchildren that buy every game and every piece of merchandise regardless of quality. If these games started flopping once they started getting shit, Sega might have learned from their mistakes and improved. But they don't have to so they never will.

The problem with the Sonic fanbase is that the characters and stories are easy to understand for the majority of people with mental retardation. Sega's problem, or any other video game company's problem, is that if it makes money, we'll do the same thing over and over again until the thing we are doing milks dry. What has kept Sonic afloat is the nostalgic factor that comes from Sonic games today and the amount of references to older games. The classics we're good, especially Sonic 3. The Adventure games, ehh. Boost gameplay, ehhhhhh. Sonic Boom, garbage.

I don't know about the SMS version, but the Mega Drive version is still recieved fairly well today, even if it's a bit dated. For some reason though, Sonic CD seems to be many critics' favorite Sonic game.

That's not true. Just because SEGA hasn't gotten right doesn't mean the idea is bad. It would take too much time and effort for SEGA to actually develop so they don't try. A lot of fan projects show how Sonic can worked in 3D if someone actually tried to make it work.
