Honest thoughts on Chrono Cross? I thought Chrono Trigger was merely okay, but I'm actually really liking this one so far. I really appreciate all the ways in which it goes out of its way to deviate from JRPG conventions. My only real issue with it is that while its battle system is very nuanced and often very enjoyable, some regular encounters can really drag on.

I have never been angrier about beating a game. First it shits all over canon, then it gives you the most asinine final boss of all time, then it expects you to start a NG+ to see alternate endings featuring your worthless party members with their ugly clothes and retarded accents.

I honestly hate it. CC is absolutely contemptible and everyone involved in it should be kicked in the sack.

I wish they fights and battles were as well paced as Chrono Trigger. Transitions to a separate battle screen, having to build up meter to use spells, and of your strongest spells take forever thanks to the psx era over-the-top magic animations. All while listening to that ear raping battle theme.

>> No.5633304

I liked it a lot back then when I played it for the first time.

I finished it and got a few more extra endings. Then I got bored.

I tried replaying it a few times, but it's really fucking slow.

Plus I want to put 2 bullets on Kid's head every single time I see her dialogue box.

Other than that, I'd say it's pretty good. It has some really interesting and genocidal moments.

Though as a Sequel of Trigger, it's a mushroom overdose rather than a planned sequel.

Would probably be a better game if it didn't have to pretend to be directly related to Trigger. Also the battle system might have a couple layers to it but every single person I've talked to about this game has basically said they hated the battles by the halfway point. I know I did.

You name any RPG and I guarantee most people get sick of random battles by the halfway point. Even shit like Tales of Symphonia and Valkyrie Profile which had interesting combat is just "PLEASE MAKE IT STOP" after the 50,000th screen transition.

Oh definitely, and it's always especially bad for games from Cross' era where it seems like every little battle animation takes 10x longer than needed. But when I say "hated" I mean it really feels like they hate it and aren't just annoyed or tired or sick of it. The music probably helps give it that extra level.

Took me 20 years to finally sit down and play this game. It wasn't anything like the other JRPGs I've played over the years and it took me a while to get used to the battle system but overall it was a decent game I think with great music, just not a good sequel.

It's not about 'knowing' how to use them because the game literally has a tutorial battle dedicated to it early on to them, its about how you can beat the whole game without ever having to think about it because of how pointless it is outside of wanting to use a summon.

The music is fantastic.

I felt that the plot is hot garbage that has to retcon or outright lie about how things happen in it and Trigger to the point of feeling like a Reptite/Dragons/whatever the fuck you want to call them Apologist story that takes every moment it can to talk about how much humanity sucks and you as the player can't really go against this, which is a pisser given that one theme it half-assed was fighting fate.

But I digress. One of the biggest problems for me though is that there are too many fucking characters. With just a quarter or even a third of them, you'd actually have more time to promote characterization and growth with the main cast but hardly anybody but the Viper Manor crew, some tangential characters and Kid have any kind of characterization that still doesn't amount to much in the long run.

And furthermore, it's a fucking pisser with all these characters, that Serge's presence in the party mandates he be around leaving you with only two slots to fill. Only three characters have the capacity to steal shit--one of whom is Kid, the second is an optional character, and the third is the pirate, so the game forces you to use certain characters egregiously especially if you want to make the final tier of gear.

I played Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross both at their releases. I liked Cross more.

The battle system is nice, and regular encounters really shouldn't be dragging on for you, considering that you can avoid most normal encounters and run from literally every encounter in the game. Trying to grind out those mini bonuses between level ups? Just stick to normal attacks rather than using elements and the battles will be over in no time due to the shorter animations.

>> No.5638549

>>5635847
It's not mandatory, though. You can just use normal attacks and not use elements. In fact, you can do something like
>fierce fierce switch characters fierce fierce switch characters.
This makes normal encounters really fast, and can actually be useful in some boss encounters, since it ensures you'll have stamina and grid to use support elements when needed.

>> No.5638992

I loved it at release and still do.

I don't get what it is with people and insisting this game needed a smaller roster, part of the fun is the large roster and the amount of party variations you can have throughout a single and many playthroughs.

If that's not a draw for you, this won't be your sort of game. Changing things up and building new parties is one of its key features, not every JRPG needs to be character-focused.

I could never get into Chrono Cross. Everything about it feels so awful compared to Chrono Trigger. No experience-based leveling up system makes me anxious, the battle system that forces you to balance an abstract elemental field is nowhere near as satisfying as the simple battle system where you just have fun learning and using dual and triple techs. Whoever was it who decided that your first potential party member should be a giant pink talking dog should've been shot. And boy oh boy, those cuboid texture-melting compression artifacts ridden 13 fps running PSone graphics sure didn't age well. At least I never got to the part where it apparently shits all over Trigger's story because I never had any patience to play it for more than 4 hours.

Don't worry, Trigger is tailor made for people who dislike JRPGs.

>Why are they all so fucking dumb?
It's not a matter of being fucking dumb, rather, it's a matter of having pedestrian tastes, which Cross doesn't cater to.
It's not really a complex game and unfortunately, it still commits the same exact mistakes as Trigger when it comes to the gameplay side, but as far as narrative goes, it's a pretty solid game and on a whole other level than Trigger in all respects infodumps aside, and I don't really like Cross either, I'd rather play the games it tries to steal ideas from.

You just have to accept that some people are simply cursed with horrible taste, and while there's some honest chaps out there who aren't bothered by it and will honestly strive for some decent agreement and discussion on what they like and don't like, there's ten times the frothing idiots who screech about anything that doesn't conform to their abysmal standards.

anyways, it's a shame the execution is so poor and that the game feels unfinished [you can say this for a couple 5th gen square games - while they aren't bad, they clearly don't meet the full vision the developers had for them].

i could talk all day about what things the game have done better, though i will say the most disappointing part was lynx because he's one of square's better villains, he's not only threatening and evil, but genuinely cunning, and the decision to make him something other than a long haired prettyboy paid off. that said, the copout of him being wazuki is just so so awful, much worse than the copouts with kid and harle. was really hoping for him to be his own character and that they'd play up his backstory in the context of human and demi human relations [or lack thereof] because there was a lot of potential there. despite all the bad things i can say about CC though i can't bring myself to hate it, it's >comfy as all hell and i really enjoyed the journey until i got to the destination.
