I'm not even sure if this is a troll or not. Ultra Violence is "normal" mode. Anything less than that has less monsters. I beat Ultra Violence as a kid. After like a few hours of playing. It's not hard.

I also beat Nightmare as a kid. That IS hard, but it's doable with practice, patience, and determination.

Yeah, this. While Ultra-Violence is technically meant to be "hard" mode, the iwads are generally too easy on Hurt Me Plenty (the actual intended "normal" mode) or lower.
Ultra-Violence only truly lives up to being the "hard" setting when looking at Plutonia, and most pwads.

It's free software whose use case is more for development purposes than to actually playing with. You have completely free reign over all the assets included without legal repercussions, so you can more safely use it as a base for any standalone projects using say GZDoom, as that is GPL compliant.

I've heard that SgtMark apparently reused some of its maps in his own project(s), which given the nature of FreeDoom he totally can.

Ultra-Violence? Yes, of course, me and many others have done that.

Nightmare! was added because people complained that Doom was too easy (the original three episodes seldom get very hard or ballbusting on Ultra-Violence), and mostly was a joke.
They didn't intend anyone to actually seriously play the game on Nightmare!, but as it turns out, there's a few people who will do challenge speedruns on that difficulty.
A shorthand calculation is that playing on Nightmare! will tend to multiply the difficulty, often beyond the intentions of the level's design.

For a quick example, Plutonia is famously regarded as extra challenging, and that's by design, the authors described their design process as "We made sure that the maps would always be really hard for us on Ultra-Violence, if we felt it was becoming easy, we would up the challenge."
Now, it's harder, but lots of people have beaten Plutonia on Ultra-Violence, but if you play Plutonia on Nightmare! instead, you're in for a very serious challenge gauntlet, and in fact there's VERY few people who have successfully beaten Plutonia on Nightmare! without dying or without saving and loading.
Another example is that one of TNT Evilution's levels was actually thought to be outright impossible to beat on Nightmare! until someone did a few years ago, and TNT is generally considered way easier than Plutonia.

Ultra-Violence will usually depend on what maps you're playing (the original three episodes being fairly mild), but usually they will be perfectly playable, Nightmare! is way harder than what the average player will be used to and whether or not it's actually playable will usually be a wildcard.

If you install proprietary or open-source GPU drivers it runs pretty well (not sure about better), but I've found that task to be rather cumbersome. Have had multiple failed attempts at it, using my Nvidia GTX960m. Still, though, its worth a try. Have you ever used Linux before?

I've beat it on ultra violence, but I tend to play on hurt me plenty to blow off steam. Doom for me is a speed game, and hurt me plenty offers me a fun challenge whilst keeping things fast. I usually do Wadsmoosh with fullrun.pk3 and see how far I cna get before dying. No saves.

You answered your own question. Playing on HMP for the original IWADs is just too easy to be taken seriously, but that's my opinion and not a rule. People always think there are rules to this shit. It's a video game, and we're assholes on 4chan. Don't ask other people for extra rules.

Yes, and that means you either quicksave your way through, or switch to HMP. There is literally nothing about this that could possibly be considered cheating, and thinking that you can't save while playing Doom is a speedrunning thing most of the time. It's an intended feature of the game to quicksave, it's on the goddamn help screen in the menu.

It has slightly higher per-shot damage, but the downside of 2 shells before a reload as opposed to 8 should be an obvious one. Some enemies also regenerate HP which compounds that issue. The slayer does hold a notable range advantage over the hunter, it can make absolutely insane shots to the point where if it had a scope it'd be a better Boss rifle than the Boss itself. Played through it a day or two ago. (only on Hurt Me Plenty, doing Ultra-Violence right now)
It's good, fortunately. Gman was complaining about lighting, but I have no fucking clue what he was talking about because it was just fine. He also complains about difficulty, but he neglected to consider that possibly the difficulty settings are actually balanced (i.e Hurt Me Plenty is actually "Medium", and Ultra-Violence is actually hard and not "lol doom 1 is easy" tier). He also complains about it not having Doom 2 assets, when it's spelled out on the download page that it's a Doom 1 mapset meant to resemble an Episode 5 to Doom 1.

I think Gman Just quickly downloaded GZDoom and Sigil, and booted it up into Ultra-Violence without reading or thinking or tweaking settings just so he could be the first one to have a review out.

Aside from Gman's autism, SIGIL is good, and it is about as hard as it should be, even on medium. It presents enough challenge that it's not ballbusting, but it will kick your ass if you aren't paying attention, and the later levels present a decent challenge. Environments and encounters are varied, and it's a lot more vertical than original Doom 1. it also looks really fucking good imo.

I have a buddy who's trying out Hideous Destructor on GZD 4.1.2, and any explosions seems to insta-crash his game. Nothing of note in the crash log.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Downgrading GZD isn't really an option since latest HD requires minimum 4.1.0

It's tough especially on ultra violence but it fits the bill as far as what a mythical final episode to Doom 1 would be. The kind of challenge I like in vidya is when it's loosely possible to do something in one try as long as you use sound tactics and play mechanically well, and in a lot of these classic doom maps it seems like if you just go the wrong way at first in certain pistol starts, take a bad blind guess while basically unarmed, you're fucked. There are certain maps where it seems like the only way to survive on UV is to be aware of a certain secret or thing you couldn't know without blindly exposing yourself to danger, and it makes me feel like the death wasn't my fault as much as it is that this is just the natural progression of blind pistol start. Keep dying until you pick the right path like a choose your own adventure or something.

I LIKE to feel like a death was my fault, because that's a learnable experience. If the way to avoid a death or a rocky start at the beginning of a map is pure guesswork then I just feel like I'm grinding it, not actually getting any better or overcoming a real challenge beyond map memory. That's my personal issue here.

Space Pirates are a space fairing empire led by an immortal hyper intelligent space dragon and have vastly superior tech as a result. Their most basic weapon is an infinite energy plasma gun. Top tiers They also have vastly superior mobility and AI than any doom enemy.
Ing, Phazon, Chozo, X-Parasites could all legitimately solo every doom reality because of their unfair nature.
Ing are reality hoppers from a corrosive reality that kills you for being in it that can also possess and impove other life forms, Phazon is an invasive sentient planet that took down multiple ''almost ascended reality with our swole mind'' tier alien species without even noticing and can only be killed by blowing up the entire planet, Chozo exist in a different invisible layer of reality no one in Doom could see to fight back against, X-Parasites would eat and then become everything in doom because they were retardedly overpowered and Samus only won via being 33% metroid.
Ironically Metroids are pretty fodder and largely just plot points. He'd still run out of ammo trying to kill the tanky fuckers, though.

Metroid enemies are both technilogically superior by miles to even Doom 2016 hell but also unfair to fight as Samus could only win because of her fucked genetics and genetically bonded armor having the exact upgrade needed to take them out.
The general tech level in Doom and Metroid is miles apart even outside of outliers like Samus suit.

I could see him taking on Space Pirates somewhat well until he runs out of ammo less than 5 mins in because of comparitively bloated metroid enemy hp and inferior rockets to begin with then dying.

Guy playing through Duke for the first time since release here.
There's something about this game that didn't age well. The maps range from gimmicky to boring, the better monsters are just reskinned Doom enemies while the worst ones are plain annoying to fight, and the gunplay is dull outside of the fun novelty weapons like the shrinker.
I went back to Doom after a decade and still loved it, but either Duke 3D just hasn't aged well at all or I was very easily impressed back then.
