I watched ICARUS's video on Sigil. Mostly nowhere near as bad as Gman's video, but his rant about no longer taking skill and relying too much luck, while the gameplay clearly shows hes savescumming to the point of disadvantaging himself with very low health every load, really irked me.

>> No.5628591

>>5628585
I got the sense that Gman was just trying to get more people who have never played a game older than Halo 2 to check out Blood in general, and his title that this particular remake was very good was just misleading. The game overall is great and I think that's kind of what he was trying to say. He doesn't focus on retro content at all though, whereas someone like Civvie does just that..

Mostly classic Doom and modding classic Doom (both mods and maps from before the year 2000, and after), but most people here also like a lot of other 90's shooters.
Games like Quake and Duke Nukem 3D are revered as greats, among many others, and on the subject of modifying Doom many will take a page or two from cherished classics like these, either on a superficial level or on core gameplay mechanics (I'm guilty of both).

Quake 3 Arena doesn't get a lot of discussion, but there's people here who're fond of it (it's one of the few multiplayer shooters I was ever particularly fond of, next to Day Of Defeat and Counter-Strike), and if you were to ask if anyone wants to play a game you could throw up a server and maybe play with some people.
Most people play singleplayer games here but there's the occasional multiplayer.

Do a lot of mods just not have any enemies drop ammo ever? I'm noticing this is a trend and makes them pretty much unplayable on more vanilla maps, relegating them more and more to slaughter maps where you drown in enemy, maps I don't like.
Not sure if they ain't set to drop ammo or they got broke at some point by gzdoom updates because its so absurdly common I can't imagine this many otherwise good modders fucked up the same thing

One of the great things is that there are 20+ years of fan level packs made, some which are as good, even better than the original published levels.

The added beauty here is not just good maps for base gameplay, but you can just take a gameplay mod you really like and play with these maps and map packs, and it's like having a new game almost.
Doom was made to allow for interchangeable usermade content, the base game is somewhat simple, and the sourcecode was given away in 1998, so Doom has had a very good and long shelf life.

Making a level for the original Doom is a lot easier and simpler than making maps for games like Duke Nukem 3D (which is a good game, but making maps for it isn't nearly as straight forward and clean cut), and some particularly userfriendly tools became available in the last decade.

There used to be a fair deal of multiplayer here back when Best-Ever was a thing and made it easy to set up servers. It kind of whittled away though, probably doesn't help that some modders jumped ship from Zandronum to GZDoom and that the former barely updates anymore.

Its actually because of a few things, as someone who played the multi more than any other game in my life.
A: Complex doom. I don't know what it is with this mod, but it completely dominated the online and still does. I don't like it. A lot of people I knew didn't like it. And they stopped playing.

2: CTF was made private exclusive. No reason was given for this, the IDLF CTF server, by far the most popular one, was just private one day. This was what I mostly played.

3: 'BEST EVER' forum drama. This was the primary NA host. EU had Grandvoid. For some reason, when BE killed itself, most of the playerbase just stopped playing rather than playing on GV, despite getting decent ping on it. This was the biggest blow. It completely destroyed the playerbase and its never got even remotely close to recovering.

4: A general shift to survival and LMS because people seem to want to watch more than to play. And because there are less players and death matters so much in these, you invariably get TK'ers or stallers who come in and kill the servers. Same guys every time.

5: Too many variants on popular mods. Like 5 different versions of GVH. All worse than vanilla. But the doom online playerbase likes to play anything 'new' even if its worse. So they play it rather than vanilla, remember its shit, leave and it just stays dead. This killed a lot of mods. They just can't leave shit alone.

On the other side, the MM8BDM community added a lot of players, but they have the same ''make 15 variations of the same mod until people don't want to play anymore'' issue doom has combined with getting one of their main mods (Saxton Hale) banned from hsoting for around 3 fucking years. They mostly play LMS so they don't help the people who left because of lack of non-permadeath servers to play

It's surprisingly pretty rough with ammo sometimes (The Birth especially), and it doesn't help that monsters aren't consistent with their drops. You might end up being frugal with Freeze Ray, Shrinker and Devastator ammo, though. The game seems to drop ammo for those fairly occasionally, and explosives generally see pretty consistent usage and supplies.

My experience with this was.
>wait until 300 MB of mods download
>join server
>it's a full blown cancer, some fucking anime girls as monsters that kill everyone on sight
>health and armor go up to 500
>dozens of different weapons, most of which are reskins
>balance, what balance?
>wait for half an hour because there are like a thousand monsters on map
>everyone is playing extremely slow because legendaries one-shot you
>monsters that will run to the other side of the map to kill you in one shot
>all monsters now shoot (projectiles or plain bullets), even pinkies
>zombies now have any weapon: a quadruple shotgun can now kill you in (you guessed) one shot, BFG zombies, chainsaw zombies etc
>finally last survivor manages to exit a map
>he now has all runes, top weapons, 250 hp/armor
>spawn
>get killed by legendary in one shot in first 3 minutes of play because I don't have any armor or decent weapons
>now have to watch for another half-hour how other players slowly try to kill other legendaries with grenade launcher or mines

It's more and more geared up to social engineer people into being stuck on it all the time, getting into petty fights over nothing and making a priority to showing shit that'll piss them off, all in the name of ad revenue.

In some ways it's kind of an extension of what smartphones have done to people, there's a lot of data to show that smartphones have wrecked people's memory spans, between having Facebook to hand to remember every detail about somebody for them and being able to photo/record everything has resulted in them delegating remembering stuff to a device.

Kinda explains the 85% of people who can't go five minutes without checking them.

Doom originally supports using the mouse for fast and precise horizontal turning, you can't look up or down, but the added freedom and mobility of just mouseturning is both original and worthwhile.
Romero played with keyboard and mouseturning, and you can see that distinct movement in his demos playing in attract mode.

The game incorporated vertical auto-aiming to compensate for the lack of true 3D aiming, and thus the original levels are balanced for that. A few instances will let you break an original level over your knees if you have the ability to freely aim up and down, but for most of the levels, turning off the auto-aim and using freelook (through a sourceport, obviously), doesn't add up to TOO much of an advantage, but it's still noticeable and it wouldn't be "kosher".

If you've already beat Doom as is, do as you feel like. I always found the Quake/Half-Life/Duke style of freelook without auto-aim very pleasant, and these days I just prefer that as a matter of comfort, to the point that I sometimes outright prefer a twinstick gamepad for classic horizontally locked Doom.

I didn't save over it or anything. This has happened to me before too an it's mad annoying.

I have a small modding question
I'm playing Hideous Destructor, but I want the extra sounds added by Sound Caulking PC (such as the creepy Lost Soul wails). I tried loading caulkpc.pk3 last, but it still won't affect the sounds - it's as if Hideous Destructor is using different tags for them or something?

Is there any easy way to go about making them compatible, or would I have to go into HD itself and replace OGGs one by one?

It probably is. Check the SNDINFO in HD's pk3. You may have to make your own SNDINFO to overwrite HD's and load it fter in tandem with Sound Caulking.

Another question - I use the Footsteps mod, but I'd very much like to expand it to also include enemies, at least humanoids, in HD. Would this be just a matter of using a similar technique for the other monster classes instead of just the player? Or would it be more involved than that?

Remade Doom 64 MAP33 titlemap to be used as the actual TITLEMAP here

New introduction text screen which tells the story so far from the game manual (can be skipped at any time to get right into the game)
Fixing obvious bugs and mismatched or unaligned textures present on the original levels
Only minor fixes made to maps (small things that improve the original maps visually or otherwise, but the maps will not deviate from the originals)
Map order is matched to Doom 64's original order exactly
Bonus "fun" maps are accessible from a hub style selection map
Reward for completing Hectic is a Megasphere (what you would get from the death traps) and some early cells
Titlemap has been made into a playable level also accessible from the fun map hub
Testing map included where you can see every monster, weapon, item, and prop and pit monsters against each other in a 12v12 arena
"Fake sky-hack 3D geometry" recreated by using actual 3D floors
Doom 64 style "split doors" recreated using scripts and sound sequences
MAP20 Breakdown's "sliding door" effect converted to Polyobjects
Scrolling cloud skies made using hires cloud textures, skyboxes and translucent 3D floors
All original cloud skies match up to the color and map slot they belong in from the original game
Colored sector lighting as close to Doom 64 as possible in GZDoom, will be improved in the future!
Freshly written scripts for every map, which accurately recreate original game events and puzzles
Toggle option to choose between a fully revamped arsenal with smoother firing animations from Cage and Almonds or the original animations
Toggle option to make bullet and shell casings drop from either animation set
Original push-back and recoil (purely visual) effects added to most weapons

Unmaker has been recreated to function identical to the original and uses cells for ammo
Three Demon Keys and upgrades to the Unmaker function as in Doom 64
Doom 64 HUD has been remade and incorporated replacing the normal Status Bar
G/ZDoom's alternative HUD is left unchanged, and thus still available for use if you prefer the alt hud
You can see which Demon Keys you have by checking the Automap
Player viewheight and size adjusted to match with Doom 64's larger map and sprite scale
Player speed and gravity adjusted to match Doom 64's properties
All Doom 64 monsters are remade and adjusted to match Doom 64's original behavior
All items, powerups, pickups, keys, weapons, ammo, and props are recreated
No additional enemies, gore effects or crazy map effects are added
Simple usage of dynamic lights to enhance atmosphere, but don't worry they aren't overbearing
>Planned for the future:
Proper Doom 64 lighting for every map (probably a version 2 update later on) once the lighting system is perfected and all Doom 64 effects are possible
Custom brightmaps for many glowing surfaces and areas of sprites that make sense (some will already be included at first release)
All new 9-level episode featuring the cut weapon and maps from alpha and beta screenshots designed to bridge the gap between Doom 64 and DOOM 2016, the "Retribution" episode
Bring over all "forgotten" levels, including the Absolution TC exclusive maps, the Outcast levels, and more as time passes

It's funny how clearly different Romero thinks about difficulty compared to guys like Gman, Icarus, and people in general who don't like Sigil. When Romero plays something like E4M2 on Devs Play or Sigil on stream, he just laughs when something ridiculous happens and rolls with it even when it kills him. But when others have that happen, they gets pissed and call it "bullshit" or "trolling" or something else that implies that there's something wrong with the game because it didn't fit their expectation of what Doom is supposed to be.

I feel like there's a particular pride for a good amount of video game players where they just expect that they're good at video games and that they should be able to beat stuff with only a little sweat. So when there's something that's truly tough, especially in an unexpected way, they'll end up blaming the game for "bad design" rather than just having the humility to believe that something can be intentionally designed well but in a way that they don't personally enjoy. It's psychologically a lot easier for someone to turn difficulty up and then shift blame than just turn it down.

I should have done better, maybe I cornered myself in a stupid way, or I had a mean ambush sprung on me and I hesitated instead of acting.

I seldom feel like I direct my anger towards a level, in fact the last time I did that was because the levels were nowhere near as challenging as they were claimed to be, and it felt like I was being constantly blueballed.
I was upset because I was promised difficulty but then it was way too easy, so I guess it tested my patience in a completely different direction.
I don't usually tend to seek the greatest challenge either, yet I really like what a ballbuster Thy Flesh Consumed is for the first few maps, maybe I just like the exact way it bites me in the heels.

Blue potions, soulspheres, and megaspheres all provide a supply of supernatural healing commonly referred to as blues. Rather than increasing your HP over the normal maximum as in vanilla, blues provide a variety of more subtle benefits. Your medical needs are mostly automated, as open wounds will be sealed up and treated wounds will be cured slowly over time. If you've suffered rare aggravated damage (caused by such things as using second flesh with temporarily bandaged wounds, coming down from berserk, or balefire attacks from hell knights and barons), blues are the only way to cure it and recover your full maximum HP. Your encumbrance tolerance is increased by about 25%, scaling down with lower amounts of blue (one potion gets you most of the way to the maximum bonus). Random effects such as converting enemies to allies or a full HP refill also fire off occasionally. Blues are consumed really slowly and there's no upper limit whatsoever. Once you've gotten one soulsphere you'll be good to go for a long time, and you'll almost certainly find more before you get anywhere close to running out. The potions are worth about 1/7th of a soulsphere. Megaspheres provide the same amount of blues as a soulsphere, but also gives a layer of spiritual armor on top of that.

The only reason you might not want to consume all blues you find immediately would be if you wanted to use the blursphere. Its evil magic doesn't get along well with blues and you'll find yourself caught in very literal crossfire if you try to use them together.

Oh shit, I see. So if you use the blursphere it cancels out any blue energy you've acquired? So that's why I was bursting into flames sometimes when I activated the blur, and other times not...I was never understanding what triggered it

Generally no. The blursphere's effects are more powerful than blues, but it also causes aggravated damage in addition to insanity effects. In longer mapsets, it's definitely better to have the steady constant healing of blues. Sorry bro but no. Go compare similar attacks in games like Metroid prime to Doom. Samus has a health bar so long it's insane, and all her weapons are easily equal to at least a chaingun/rocket launcher, BFG if you count some of the more insane Prime 2 ones. We're talking about someone who can facetank a rocket and take one third of one tenth of their health in damage, carries hundreds of similar homing rockets, has multiple infinite ammo weapons that can kill most unarmored targets in under 5 hits, etc.

Samus is weird because how strong she is changes constantly through a game, as the whole point of Metroid is finding new upgrades for your suit. How a fight would play out against her would be totally different based on which game you pulled her from, and what POINT in that game you pulled her from. It's complicated like that.

E4M2 was Romero's low point. Ugly, annoying and doesn't look like properly finished (after all, it's a 6 hour map).

IMHO Sigil's spiritual predecessor was E4M6, which played (and looked) similarly with movement restrictions and puzzles to learn. Add a Sigil type start and end, some glowing cracks and a few shootable eyes, and E4M6 can be put into Sigil easily. Same can't be said about E4M2.

Original Doom did not have freelook. You could use the mouse to look left and right, but not up and down, as in RoTT or Duke. There are settings you can change to get GZDoom to behave fairly similarly to Doom '93, but ultimately, the way GZDoom handles certain things, beyond visuals, is fundamentally different. All that being said, in practical terms, unless you're trying to speed run and rely on Doom '93 glitches, any differences will be negligible. Any skill acquired to GZDoom transfers to Doom '93 and vice versa. If you're looking for a modern port that "...that accurately reproduces the experience of Doom as it was played in the 1990s..." Chocolate Doom is absolutely the way to go. You might also have luck with other ports like PRBoom+, but Chocolate Doom is purpose built for what you're looking for.

They either just play the game straight in which case it's fun enough although verging on too easy since the game was probably expected to be played on keyboards before mice

Or they royally fuck you in the ass with a GOTCHA trap like cyberdemons spawning directly in front of you in close quarters, a teleporter leading into a point-blank clusterfuck, a platform suddenly dropping into an inescapable death-pit, or having such numbers of enemies or scarcity of ammo that if you don't know what's coming in advance and rationing HEAVILY/finding secrets you're just straight fucked.

If you're having trouble playing the game on Ultraviolence, there's nothing wrong with going down to Hurt Me Plenty and if you're just new to this style of FPS game in general I probably wouldn't make fun of you for playing on Not Too Rough but that makes the maps too simple to be fun in my opinion. HMP decreases the amount of enemies and increases pickups relative to Ultraviolence, making instances like gotcha traps easier to deal with. I and a lot of other people generally like the "gotcha" instances of DOOM though; it's a moment of surprise where you need to think quickly and respond to a situation at a glance. It has a learning curve for sure, but you'll both figure out how to deal with each enemy type in a gotcha situation, as well as get a better sense of where to expect these traps in the first place.
Again, I do recommend playing on HMP if you're having trouble with UV. The community likes to stress "UV pistol start or you're a pussy," and while I think that's the most fun way to play once you've gotten gud, it's not really the best for newer players.

>using the look up or look down features (as seen in some of the licensed engine games)

There's this persistent myth that Doom was designed exclusively around using only a keyboard.

Just point people to old speedruns or whatever. DM demos. People definitely play with a mouse in those.

Or the original demo lumps, where you can clearly see on the movement how Romero is playing with a mouse for turning.

Hey people! What's the deal with invisible bridge on level 3 (I think) in plutonia 2? Do I have to load some extra stuff for it to show?

Just skip the level. It's impossible. By the time you have to fight a fuckzillion of spiders and cacos you have literally no ammo. Guy who made it is retard.

No thats a common glitch where it wipes your runes.

You can just add the runes with a console command. That happens sometimes.

Bring up the console and type "impulse 11" to add a rune

That was a bug that could happen in the original .exe sometimes.
Most sourceports fix it.

your typing it without the "" right? Some people forget to not type those.

does the console not say anything? Maybe close the game and open it up and try again.

And as a last resort if that doesnt work you can just console command "noclip" through the floor thats supposed to open up leading to the final boss. Thats all that happens is a door opens.

You should try Dissolution Of Eternity and Scourge Of Armagon too. Dimensions Of The Past is great as well.
