Is there a way to undo yellowing? Youtube tutorials are horseshit.

>> No.5627243

Just enjoy the console, man.
Think of it as the yellow pages of a book. It doesn't make it any less good.
Let the Saturn wear her yellow plastic with pride.

>> No.5627283

1. Get a transparent plastic tub a little bit bigger than the console.
2. Remove console case & place in tub
3. Buy a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, pour entire bottle in tub.
4. Fill the rest of the tub with water until case is completely submerged
5. Leave the tub out in the sun all day, or under a UV light if you've got one.

A good 10 hours of exposure should do the trick. We're getting into summertime so now's the perfect time to do it if you go down the natural light route.

It might sound nutty, but that shit works wonders on plastic hesdlights, leaves them looking like new, and literally just sands off the layers of discoloration, then buffs everything.

Obviously, the plastic on any console is very different than the plastic in a headlight, but the basic idea would apply.

Also, considder trying toothpaste. It's aa trick that also works wonders on headlights.

Last idea from.me is to use a glass oven top cleaner. Preferably one without extra flakes of abbrasive added 8n. I have used that shit to successfully resurface PS1 games. And it's a nice, mild abbrasive. So worth a try.

There's retr0bright, which an anon above has already suggested. As for keeping it non-yellow, sometimes it is inevitable even if you keep it somewhere out of sunlight, the plastic will still react with the oxygen in the air. Nigga you stupid.

Basically, the plastic they used in these things was EXTREMELY flammable and needed something called bromide mixed in to stop it from catching on fire any time the circuitry inside got too hot. Unfortunately at the time, they didn't realize that the mixture of bromide and plastic would start to un-bond eventually and turn the plastic an ugly yellow color. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and UV light causes a chemical reaction that temporarily re-bonds the bromide to the plastic and gets rid of the nasty coloring. It doesn't last forever, but you're not "dissolving a layer from the top".

As far as I know it's not like that. I've researched it for LEGO.

The brittleness is natural. It won't come back. It's probably already brittle.

There's no bromite in these plastics. It's disputed even among LEGO, apparently they stopped the bromite since the beginning of 80's.

What is happening is that the plastics are coming back to their natural state, a chemical reaction is happening, because of heat and UV.

The peroxide will unbound the outer layer of oxygen, making the plastic return to it's natural condition, but polymer bonds will still be all "opened" to a new oxidation.

So you need to raise the ABS plastic to its glass transition temperature with an air oven, that wouldn't melt the plastic, and would make the polymers come back to their original characteristics. I believe that happens around 95º C with plastics.

It's risk, though.

I'm not sure if it deforms the plastic a little bit or not. Theoretically it shouldn't, you're not melting it, but I think it's possible for it to get distorted a little bit.

So, you'd need to remove the outer oxidation and then put it in a air oven into the glass temperature of the plastic and hope for it not to distort.

I want to test it.

I want to buy some old LEGO sets, but most are yellowed, it's risk, but if it works with LEGO it'll work with anything, since LEGO are extremely precise.

I'll post the source in the next post.

Then there's the plastic degradation itself, which is dealt by raising it to its glass temperature.

The degradation processo will start all over again though.

But it'll let it last for a good 20+ years before having to do that again.

I should also point out to anyone dismissing the retr0bright process that the major reason it incorporates a gelling agent as an ingredient is to make the mixture uniformly applicable with a paintbrush, which is more efficient/less wasteful/safer to discard than total submersion methods. They don't sell this formulation, it's simply the most effective and practical method found to date regardless of what further analysis has determined since then. I think that the sunlight restructures the polymers, so it release the oxygen bonded with the ends of the polymers.

So I think it's a slow way to bring the plastics to the original form, just like when it reached its glass transition state.

But since the yellowing comes back really fast, I think that the sunlight is just, somehow, unbounding the oxygen on the outer layer and not restructuring anything?

So it's probably fixing only the outer layer of the polymers, and not inside.

So I guess the "perfect way" to go is to bring the plastics to its glass transition through an oven/hot water.

And do not use the hydrogen peroxide, because it'll increase the brittleness. Maybe the gel is better, because it won't penetrate the plastic microscopic cracks.

But also, maybe, if you bring it to its glass transition, the cracks will be gone and you can safely use the hydrogen peroxide.

I understand, but like I said in >>5627416. I genuinely play it for games obviously but it's also nice to physically have it present along side anyother electronic hardware in the entertainment section of your house. I've also noticed that most of you /vr/gins aren't actively social enough to care about whether your console is setuped & cleaned enough to seem remotely appealing to guests whenever they may visit your livings.

you're not really making it seem obvious, champ.
>I've also noticed that most of you /vr/gins aren't actively social enough
off to /v/ with that bait, nobody believes you're socially active anyway.
Anyway, yellowed plastic =/= unclean. I wonder if you actually own a white Saturn.
Anyway, people have already replied to you: if it bothers you so much, get a black Saturn. But you should have gotten it back in the 90s instead of jumping the bandwagon now.
