Is the original game any good?
If not is there some based-mod that makes it better?

The original game is great I thought, but there's some cool stuff you can download like a patch to make it 2-player.

It has its issues but I really liked it back in the day. The worst part is the hit detection but if you get used to it its a pretty good game.

Evermore has a *very* interesting atmosphere and some top shelf aesthetics, but it has problems with its story. Its mechanics and gameplay are an imitation of Secret of Mana's, though not necessarily a bad one.

Now that could be forgiving with an endearing story but this game's is... almost good? The central premise is fine but the core conflict is missing something. Like, from the mood and tone I always felt like there hints of a greater, omnipresent evil just offscreen, but this never shows up properly. Really, when your final boss is an evil robot butler, it sure feels like those old rumors were true--they actually *did* scrap a darker, more malevolent story for one where everything only looks and feels creepy but it's objectively about a kid and his shape changing dog running a few RPG obstacles courses to get back home without a real Boogie Man to be found.

It needed--even for something SNES level-- more of a twist, a better villain or villains pushing behind the scenes for some kind of dark confrontation.

I thought it was that all the major chars you encounter were just people from the everyday world thrown into an experiment that creates them little worlds based on their personalities. Eventually they figure this out and work towards escaping and confronting what brought them there. Decently done but a bit vague, there's far more just fighting your way through areas than plot, which isn't bad in a game that focuses on strange atmosphere. A lot of the world seems gloomy and oppressive yet the game has very light hearted dialog and characters. The magic system is a high point but turns into spamming attack magic until you run out of materials and have to get more.

Still it's a brave effort on its own merits and far more than 'baka gaijins make secret of mana' - you can appreciate it more now we do have english SD3/SoM2. Impressed me how good it could be making a 'weeb' rpg borrowing japanese gameplay aesthetics in the 90s.

I don't remember what it was about this boss, but I definitely remember this one being one of the hardest. Also that big flying boss in the swamp place I also remember giving me a hard time.

Is it those few parts where you have to change to the dog and have to separate from the MC? I wonder if you could just go solo at the parts where it breaks? I had been thinking about playing this with my bro, and am disappointed to hear about the 2-player patch breaking stuff. As a kid, I played through Secret of Evermore by passing the controller.

I...am almost certain the majors knew they were in a fantasy realm of their own making--Fire Eyes brings it up and/or at least all of them mention how each of their areas enticed them.

It's not a bad effort of a game, really it's not, but the plot just throws Evil twin shenanigans at the protagonist and the end twist is still "Butler Did It" without any set up or explanation beyond the guy's a robot with a screw loose.

It could just have been done better, even for a game of it's time.

Using "it's" instead of "its" for possessive is not really a typo, just a normal mistake that you can make. A typo is when other people misspell their words by accident, not when you don't know when "it's" and "its" are used right.

Yeah, the rat is annoying because you can only hit him with long range stuff. He's tough if you haven't been leveling your spells or don't have call beads. I had to level up my spear until I could throw it at him and then I was able to win.

Still in my top 3 favorite games of all time. Never played a game with such a mysterious, ominous atmosphere.
As>>5628106 says there's hints of a darker presence just lurking off-screen that we never get to see. As far as art direction, graphics, and sound I can't think of any other game that I would prefer.
>>5626309
There's a balance patch that fixes alchemy casting (to where you can't spam it) and some gameplay tweaks but it doesn't change much really.
Another interest to me are the many bugs present. SoE is EXTREMELY buggy with some able to break the game completely or render it unbeatable. There's so many they have almost become part of the game's atmosphere to me and make me appreciate how quirky this game is even more.
Leaving with one of my favorite songs off the soundtrack.

What if we take SoM and MST3K and combine them into one soulless incomplete game?

Hated it when it first came out because I was expected a better SoM. But just about everything in SoE is inferior. The music, the weapon leveling, the magic/alchemy... I liked it a little more when I replayed it a few years ago. This was definitely over hyped and I fell for the marketing frenzy that piped out this steaming pile of shit.

I always thought of it as kindof a chill Secret of Mana.

The music is almost all ambient noise, which is a hit or miss depending on your view. And the ending is very anticlimactic. But the different eras are interesting and I found it to be fun both in playstyle and general feel.
It's maybe got a B-Movie feel? Which is surprisingly fitting to say, given the hero is a huge fan of those. A little hokey, with one-note villains, but still fun in its way. B-Movies need love, too.
Just a chill SNES action-RPG experience.

Interview with one of the programmers:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2009/04/interview_with_brian_fehdrau_secret_of_evermore

It's heartwarming how he thought he made a bad game, but thanks to emulators and SoE being a highly downloaded rom on sites, he realized he made a fun game with it's own following.
