Hey. How's it going?
It's 2AM on a Saturday. A Beautiful summer morning here in Idaho.
So go on, post the stuff you're working on. Whether it's a new mod or some mapset, it's all cool. We've been dying to see it.
Just remember, all feedback is good feedback, let's keep it civil.

OK, I did a little more experimentation and discovered that it only happens when I use IDKFA (I was doing this in the first place because I was testing out some shit [exactly what is irrelevant]). I just now tried it again and just played it normally and it was fine. So then I tried using cheats (like I had been doing originally) to see if that was the problem and it seems like IDKFA specifically is the issue, whereas IDDQD works fine. Can I do anything to fix this? Maybe change the source port settings or... ? I'd hate to not even have IDKFA as an option and just any glitch/problem in general I don't want to leave unfixed if at all possible.

Yeah, my attempt from a few minutes ago was without mods. I just tried it again with a mod (SIGIL) right after seeing your post and it works fine. With or without cheats it seems to be no problem. Except for IDKFA of course. That and that alone is fucking everything up and causing a crash every single time. But it's ONLY when I finish the first stage (I haven't tried level skipping and seeing if this is a problem with other exits or not). It always crashes at the level over screen.

OK, I just tried it again with SIGIL and even with IDDQD enabled I could beat the first stage just fine. But when I tried to add the Bolognese gore mod on top of SIGIL then it crashed upon finishing the first level.

>> No.5625352

It'll win awards because of its historical significance and the utterly insane hype surrounding it. It's as close as we'll ever get to an official Episode 5. And how could you not love it for that alone? But it sure as fuck won't win awards for its quality. It has quality atmosphere and interesting settings, but the level design hovers around "above average" level quality.

It's just one dude recycling a lot of ideas, and in some ways it feels kind of hollow, especially the secret level.

If it's getting awards for hype it should get the "only mildly lived up to the hype" award.

The point is that it got a fuckton of people extremely excited in a way that few Doom mods have ever done. And THAT will win it awards. Call it sentimentality or whatever you want, but people were hyped for it and that counts for something. Doesn't change the fact that its level design is just OK, but it'll still win awards one way or another. It means a lot to a lot of people that it even exists. And that's why it'll get votes by the shitton in the Cacos.

IDKFA = didn't crash

IDDQD = crashed

IDDQD wasn't a problem before and now it suddenly is. I have no idea what the fuck is going on. pic related is the error message I got for one of the crashes. I didn't comment on a few, because I couldn't actually think of a lot to say about some of them, and some I didn't recognize.

Doomguy is Caucasian looking, but beyond that he's never been defined much in the games, because really he's meant to be a blank slate for the player character.
This means that a skin which makes him black, or a woman, technically isn't incorrect, because you're just supposed to immerse yourself into the game.
Most people don't feel a need for added detail like that though and insert themselves into the game like this fine anyway, which is why you don't see a lot of mods like that and little demand for them (this goes for both blank slate vessels and for more defined characters).

Caleb sounds kinda like an anglo name, but I don't think they ever described his heritage in detail. In fact he could be some orphan of indeterminate origin who just grew up into a vile thug.
A generic white looking American in the 1920s could be anything from a Scandinavian, to a German, to a Brit, to some manner of Hispanic, plausibly a mix.

Right, but SIGIL is still better than like 99% of usermade content for Doom. The maps have great artwork (except a few hiccups like the Lost Soul maze in M7 or the the secret level). The maps have their own personality. They are memorable, and once you play through, you will remember the entire thing for a long time. Lots of inventions, great ideas that will be copied by users in their future hackwork.

Honestly, SIGIL along with NRFTL is clearly the best mapset ever in Doom, and not because of the author/official tag. They are just vintage Doom.

I don't think so.

The only reason SIGIL will be memorable is because Romero made it and for no other reason.

I want you to imagine the following:
What do you think would have happened if Romero decided to make SIGIL without ever mentioning it, then once it's finished, he would release it anonymously or under a different pseudo name on doomworld, zdoom or /vr/?
There would be criticism because of the length of each map and difficulty settings ("durr its too easy/hard") and praise because of the music and map style, just like any other of the 200.000 maps so far.
Then once the dust has settled, everybody would have forgotten this map pack ever existed in the first place.
SIGIL could only dream of ever getting a Cacoward.

Honestly, the only logical conclusion is:
SIGIL is only getting praise because of Romero. That's it. Period.

I don't really mind HL because even during the scripted scenes you were still "in control". Also the game wasn't strictly linear and you could (and had to!) go there and back again.
Pure maze-oriented game play (like Doom) is also very limiting in its own way.
For me (mainstream) FPS games died when they definitively became interactive movies sometimes in the mid-00s.

The rules I said are absolutely must for a commercial add-on, at least 20 years after release (TNT and Master Levels were hot garbage, but the game was new then).

NRFTL clearly qualify as it was made by only two people (means no clusterfuck design), proper difficulty, different levels, not just the same shit over and over, no hacking with the game's assets, maps are no copycats, but totally new and fresh.

Sigil also qualifies. Every map offers something you didn't see earlier, except maybe the secret level.

Chainworm Commando. Really, this thing was just vomit inducing. This guy really thought toliets or train stations look good with Doom textures. He really think it.

And people say this pile of crap can be sold commercially. Mishmash of ripped textures from other games (automatic DSQ), ugly, nonsensical room, annoying gameplay, it wants to be a clishe Duke 3D usermap trapped with Doom 2 assets.

Yeah, and he thinks unseeable stairs as mandatory progression is good.

Stops polluting my eyes after suffering through the third map. Didn't even try, just IDDQD, and fuck it.

Let's go back to Sigil to see something that don't destroy my poor eyes.

I have. The ZS status bar code is nice and clean for doing simple huds with, but the menu code (as in the main menu, options menu etc) stuff is absolutely disgusting. I'm using a library called "zforms" which is a bitch and a half to learn but is then convenient to work with. Has built in classes for buttons and windows and whatever.

The fact that every single hud object is drawn through a single call in a RenderOverlay override that cascades through arrays of arrays of arrays of hud elements might interest you. And then there's a second cascade for ticking them since they don't tick by themselves, and a third for passing player input.

Just load up bolognese and give yourself the rocket launcher. They still kneel in the gore pile fingering themselves but if this is a fetish thing then that'd probably make it better for you, right?

Buckethead sounds great, but the midis are more fitting for Doom.

Is this thread really the place for that kind of discussion? Fuck off with your outrage politics.

Anon did that in a minute or two. Just a simple file swap. No need for credits.
You can do it too.

I don't know if this has been brought up anywhere (I couldn't find it online) but Blood - Fresh Supply will not run if you try to run it from a folder with too long of an address. This is a bug that should be fixed. No other games are generally not like this.

I spent a good 2 hours trying to figure out why my game didn't work (searched all the config and data files on the GOG and Steam versions, reinstalled many times, and searched the registry a lot) before realizing my file name was too long.

Setting it to auto will make your batteries consolidate their charge so that your lower capacity batteries are slowly emptied into your higher capacity ones. You'll need a BFG if you want to refill your batteries without draining others.

Related. I never see anyone mention Jimmy's Jukebox. Tons of Jimmy tracks in there and it's preeeetty good.

I started out using no bleeding, least monster numbers, and reduced damage until I got comfortable. Or you can just leave the training wheels on forever and not care because its still a fun mod.

So I'm not really a doomer and I've played mostly IWADS in crispy in recent years. Is there any reason to play sigil in gzdoom over the compat wad in crispy? Is the compat version good, I've read here that there are some annoying differences?

Just BD with some tweaks. Not all that interesting.

I've been playing Compat and I love it, but I'd like to know what the differences are

>> No.5629510

GZDoom supports real music playback, which I don't know if Crispy does or not, so if you want the Buckethead music you would want a port that supports more music formats besides .midi and .mus

>> No.5629528

>>5629510
Nah I don't care about the music, I'm going to play the midi version. If like to know whether the gameplay, enemy placement etc is screwed up.

>> No.5629541

>>5629528
Oh, no, you'll be good.
Jimmy's really good at music too, so the .midi version will be a treat in its own right.
