The thing with Castlevania is that it has:
-great gameplay, perfect balance between fun platforming and hard challenge
-amazing gothic aesthetics that can appeal to the video game nerd who appreciates good spritework, the goth guys who want to see their aesthetics represented in a game, and normies who think of it as a tourist visiting a cathedral
-even more amazing soundtrack that also appeals to the video game nerds who enjoy good modular music, the goth/music nerd, and the normie, it sounds good for all of them
-pretty much every major console from 4th gen has a good CV entry, even Turbografx CD
When you have all these into account, it's pretty obvious there's going to be shitposting about which is "best" and what not. Too many interests interwine.

See, Metroidvania itself is a bullshit term because it was Metroid which popularized the formula, yet somehow Castlevania gets to share in the credit because SotN weaseled its way into that game style a decade after the fact.
Willyvania is just making fun of the term because Jet Set Willy pioneered that kind of game design before either of them.

"Metroidvania" was never meant to be used about anything other than Castlevania games anyway. The original meaning of the term was "Castlevania games that play like Metroid", and it was intended as an insult.

I won't say I like it much, it's ok, but I recognize its importance. It's better if you play it as if it has permadeath, in other words try to never die or take damage. It honestly requires too much focused attention for me to play it for long times this way, but I believe this is the only way to git gud at it. You can't relax or play casually. I'd guess this changes after you achieve some level of mastery.

>> No.5626702

The controls are simplistic enough. Yeah in earlier titles you have to deal with rough shit, time your jumps more since you are stuck without being able to move in mid air, platforms are wonky and hitboxes are weird. But it's manageable.

By the way, there's like 21 different castlevania threads, just saying.

Anyways, maybe it's not your cup of tea. You just got into the series and you didn't find it pleasant. That's ok. You can try many other games. You can try other games in the series, in fact. Not all of them have the same controls. In fact some of them are more polished and have a lot of movement options. In Rondo of Blood you can even moonwalk. In later titles, fucking up is mostly a product of lack of skill rather than an unfair or unpolished product.

>> No.5626708

I have a genuine question here.

Why do you classicfags dislike or hate the exploration based castlevania games? What do you find to be wrong about the series? Is it the fact that they did the same thing for like 7 entries and barely released anything classic afterwards? Is it the mechanics of games like those in general? The lower difficulty? What is it?

Ask literally anyone and they'll tell you beer is an "acquired taste." That's code for "You learn to live with how bad it tastes." And rightly so. Alcohol is literally poison and your body registers it as such, which is why it tastes bad. You have to force yourself to like it and for your body to not try to instantly reject it.

>> No.5626732

The shifted focus from tight varied levels with a lot of cool set pieces and traps that are hand crafted and designed to be fun and challenging, often encouraging use of certain tactics, to endless empty hallways with copypasted enemy encounters that can be cheesed in a million different ways and all play pretty much the same. Then you have the rest of the games which are all about a ton of useless junk, braindead "exploration" aka finding a power or item to get you to an obvious path you're meant to take that's not engaging at all and made even more mindless by the map system spelling out where you need to go, and the lack of difficulty. I liked Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia level 1 hard modes, but those are more of a happy accident that I wouldn't trust developers to recreate. And of course this style killing off classicvania makes it worse.

No. The graphics were fairly better than either, late nineties if I had to guess. But I appreciate those suggestions and will try both of those.

Werewolf The Last Warrior is a pretty awesome semi-forgotten NES game. As you can see from the video it’s got elements of Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden in there.

Yeah. Well, I won't watch it further. I'm off to download and play it. Thanks again!

This.
The taste of most macro brews becomes tiresome with time, this is to say nothing of the cheap cases that college students on a budget are likely to shell out cash for.

When I go to the store I usually feel like getting one of a variety of imported lagers but some cheap Merlot may suit me also.
Those complaining about it probably have an ax to grind but I can't sit there and pretend with a straight face that the fruit of the vine temps not.

Euripides, Bacchae
For two things, young man, are first among men: the goddess Demeter—she is the earth, but call her whatever name you wish; she nourishes mortals with dry food; but he who came afterwards, the offspring of Semele, discovered a match to it, the liquid drink of the grape, and introduced it to mortals. It releases wretched mortals from grief, whenever they are filled with the stream of the vine, and gives them sleep, a means of forgetting their daily troubles, nor is there another cure for hardships. He who is a god is poured out in offerings to the gods, so that by his means men may have good things.

Poverbs 31:6 (Wycliffe Bible)
Give ye cider to them that mourn, and wine to them that be of bitter soul.

>wine is cheap mass produced garbage
Well of course it's mass-produced NOW, with the advent of industrialized farming, but I'm talking historically. Fruits and fruit spirits were enjoyed by a privileged few, while grains and grain spirits were for the masses. But that's irrelevant because I don't drink wine because it's "classy", I drink it because it's tasty. The blood of Dionysus is more soothing to my palate than the tears of Ceres.

> What happened with islam, and christianity before that?
What are you talking about? I was never Christian. That doesn't even make any kind of logical sense, why would I ever be Christian? Fuck Jesus.

P.S. throw shade on Wicca if you want to. If you've never done a skyclad ritual, and felt the cool midnight air and moonlight kiss your bare skin as you pour libations into the earth as the incense washes over your body then I'm afraid I can't explain why I do what I do. It's something you would need to experience for yourself.

>Well of course it's mass-produced NOW, with the advent of industrialized farming, but I'm talking historically.
It's probably a complex issue. Artisanal products in general may be be finer than factory produced things but there may also be instances where industrial production methods have made products of a quality far beyond what could have been imagined in the past.

It's not true the term wasn't an insult, though it is true that neither of the two people blamed for coining it will admit to being the one who used it first. Jeremy Parish still says Scott Sharkey started saying it but he has always denied it.

Not him, but I used to be a huge fan of Sharkey. I liked him more than Seanbaby.

Sharkey's got a twitter now, although he only posts sporadically. It's just about the only activity he's got, though.
He's recently discovered the resurrected City of Heroes and it warmed my heart.
