What would have changed had the N64 launched with a disc drive from the get go? No cartridge slot, just CDs.

in hindsight, it sure is nice that cartridges are just a few MBs in size and last way longer than CDs do

It would have had more games. N64 probably would have been the jrpg system instead of ps1. The system would have had less soul.

Sure you can argue this but the N64 inarguably missed out on several mega hit games precisely because Nintendo stubbornly refused to make the move to CD-ROM. In the short term it seemed like a sound decision but in hindsight it severely hurt them.

i'll gladly take loading screens over more expensive games and less games/genres to choose from. the n64's library was garbage because of nintendo's greed.

There's no reason to believe they would have gotten more develops on board. So nothing would have been different in any meaningful way.

You realize Sony literally paid off devs to make games for their platform, right? Nintendo was going to lose 99% of those games no matter what.

>You realize Sony literally paid off devs to make games for their platform, right?
they didn't, and they didn't have to. sony was able to make third parties jump ship just by NOT charging a $19 nintendo tax per unit.

>thinking N64 had less games than PS1 because of cartridges

Right. Because discs sure helped the Saturn, right?

>> No.5624417

>>5624410
This is false. Sony subsidized third parties. Sony literally paid for the development of Final Fantasy 7 because they knew it would buy them dominance in Japan. They funneled countless millions into third parties to ensure that games stayed on their platform and their platform only. This is why Sony got all the third parties and Sega got even LESS third parties than Nintendo did despite Sega not doing any of the things that supposedly cost Nintendo third party support.

>>5624417
I’d say it was a combination of what you’re saying and this >>5624410. Like the Saturn got ports of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil but the N64 didn’t. The N64 never sold particularly well in Japan so big name Japanese third party devs didn’t have a lot of motivation to support it.

nice conspiracy theory, but square themselves stopped working on ff7 for the n64 because the hardware couldn't support what they were trying to do.
sega didn't get third-party support because they were a dysfunctional dumpster fire, whereas sony was offering a stable platform.

Sony is perhaps the first console manufacturer to buy entire companies, such as Naughty Dog and Psygnosis, so that they wouldn't make games for competing systems. Sony had a lot of money to throw around, they were going to get market dominance one way or another.

Of course there is. There’s no getting around the fact that cartridges were far more expensive to manufacture than CD-ROMs. N64 ports were also more resource intensive since cuts had to be made to fit games onto a cartridge. The Tony Hawk games are a good example of this with the soundtracks having to be trimmed on the N64.

I was just thinking about this the other day, and chatting at work. What would have happened if Nintendo didn't screw over Sony?
It would have dramatically changed the console landscape from what it is now.

From what I understood from articles is that Sony’s addon to the snes was the priority and it would have eventually put Nintendo out of the hardware business due to the language of the contract.

The benefits of adopting CDs would’ve outweighed the growing pains associated with the medium. You can spin it any way you want but the N64 marked the beginning of Nintendo going down their own path and being the primary game developer for their hardware.

Discs allowed for larger games and better music. Cartridge memory at that time was prohibitively expensive compared to the tiny high capacity flash carts available now.

This. Loading screens in games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time would kind of suck but the trade-off would be worth it for more levels, larger environments, etc.

from several different articles in magazines over the years. It was widely known that the contract definitely wasn't in nintendo's favor. Sony would get the lion's share of royalties and have all the licensing rights to the CD based games portion of the sytem. They could also produce a clone console the "playstation" which could play snes and snes CD games. This didn't sit well with nintendo (because making no money on games really sucks). Yamauchi basically decided to put sony in their place by backstabbing them and signing with sony's biggest competitor Phillips.

>> No.5627402

Basically, Sony wanted an "in" to the industry and riding Nintendo with their very successful SNES console was an easy way to do it. They made a contract that was very 1 sided and nintendo pulled a power move that blew up in their face eventually.

I understand why they did it, but not why they keep doing it now. Discs are shit and should've been dumped for modern sturdy carts years ago.
Switch kinda did it, but they did it retarded and made tiny carts kids could choke on, so they had to engineer a non-toxic coating to make it taste bad instead of just putting the data in something the size of a GB cart that kids wouldn't be able to eat.
