I’m thinking of playing TR1 and working my way through 2, 3 and 4 after. Any tips/warnings before heading in? Do I bother with Chronicles?

>> No.5610294

>>5610281
Definitely skip Chronicles and maybe even TR3 (the level design can get really bad in this one). TR1 and TR4 are amazing. TR2 is great but i think it has too much shooting against human enemies.

>>5610281
Have fun, I guess? And keep in mind that TR1 while fun as fuck, has aged considerably. I personally prefer it to TR2 - it is a more consistent game - but that's just me. Also TR2 starts rather slow. It gets really good halfway through, but you'll be forgiven if you wish to drop the game before you get to the good stuff. And TR3 is quite difficult - sometimes punishingly so.
As for whether should you bother with TR5 - not really. It's not a bad game per se, you've just seen it already. It's in reality an expansion pack to TR4. It's inoffensive and you can give it a go - but you won't be missing much if you skip it.

What's wrong with the shooting humans thing? Does 2 make Lara out to be a psycho or something?

Not him, but for me it's not that. People you kill are evil mafioso cultists anyway, so fuck them.
It's just the combat in TR was always clunky and not particularly fun. TR1 gets away with it with its enemies being melee oriented or at worst throwing slow moving projectiles at you, that you can easily avoid. And there wasn't that much combat anyway. In TR2 you have masses of enemies with hitscan weapons that can mow Lara down before she locks on them. And they are difficult to avoid because of how tanky Lara's movements are. So 90% of the time you will be losing health no matter what you do.

Should be mentioned that for the creator, it WAS that, though. The reason the enemies in TR1 aren't human is because they didn't want Lara to look like a murderer.

I agree about the first TR - it's aged, but spend some time getting used to the blockiness, and you’ll find it’s still an amazingly atmospheric game.

The lack of human enemies and combat are really in it’s favour. You get the sense that you're completely alone, exploring lost civilisations, untouched by time.

There are some genuinely scary moments that are created by simple use of space and light - exploring under the sphinx, for example.

The sparse use of sound, too - the short piece of music that plays when you uncover a new area is still hugely evocative, and the ambient sounds in Natla’s Mines make an otherwise dull area terrifying.

Yeah, it looks old and controls a bit stiff, but it's big moments - THAT lost valley bit, approaching Tihocan’s tomb, when the lights go on in Atlantis - make it all worth it. Play it and let us know what you think, OP.

>> No.5611379

IMHO, the series really declined after TR2. The original soul and atmosphere of the game was completely lost after that. I'm not sure what happened over at Core or Eidos or whatever, but starting with TR3 the franchise got really sloppy and each new sequel was like a disjointed series of ROMhacks. The Lara character also underwent significant changes along the way, having little to no consistency to her origins.

So I would recommend you play through TR1 and 2, then check out the first Crystal Dynamics reboot series (Legend, Anniversay, Underworld) and pretty much stop there. If you still need a fix for classic TR, then also look into some of the official custom levelsets released for personal computers, like Golden Mask and Lost Artifact. Those were actually okay.

But by all means, try the games for yourself and stick with what you like. If you're playing any of them on PS1, it should be easy enough to score Greatest Hits versions with demos of other TR games on them.

Eh, I dunno. I like TR3 and TR4. Quite a lot actually. Sure, some TR3 levels are wonky, but overall it is still a good game. Or it might be my nostalgia talking, with TR3 being the first TR game I've played. Personally, I am not that fond of TR2 - something in this game doesn't mesh, I just can't put a finger on it.
I definately wouldn't recommend skipping TR4 though. That's a rather strong entry into the series, with some great atmosphere.

After the last thread I decided to play through them.

Got through TR1 by myself and it was a lot of fun. I was stuck for a while n a few places because I was looking in the wrong places for a while. Some of the water levels were very claustrophobic.

TR2 felt like a big step up in difficulty. The opera house was the worst for me by far whereas the monastery levels were bit tedious but manageable. I got the impression in the last thread that people didn't seem to like the rig levels but they were probably my favorites. The diving suit is cute af. I didn't really follow the story so I had no idea what was going on with the last few levels, but whatever.

After that I did TR3. I had it years ago but never played it seriously. Got through India and Nevada on my own, but I gave in when I got to the Pacific and used a guide for the rest of the game. I'm probably just a scrub, but I don't think most people could get through London without one. Antarctica was much easier though. The cut-scenes throughout the game made it easy to follow the backstory.

I started TLR, but I was pretty burned out by that point. Got past the training levels but decided to give it a break after that.

So far I'd say TR1 > TR2 > TR3, but they all had fun parts.

One thing I really hate is how dark the games are after the first. Flares also seem to get worse with each iteration. I did think about that in TR1, how you're in some lost tomb and it's practically daylight everywhere but I wasn't complaining.

The story for TR2 is... weird. It's needlessly convoluted and simplistic at the same time. It pretty much boils down to "some asshole needs a McGuffin to turn himself into a dragon and take over the world. Lara also wants the McGuffin for shits and giggles. So 80% of the game is spent looking for yet another McGuffin to open the plot door". Also - why an Italian mob? Wouldn't the chinese mob make more sense from a story perspective? I know Core wanted Lara to go to Italy - but italian mobster going after ancient Chinese artifacts seems so random.

>> No.5613647

>>5613423
I've played the first five games in a month, back in 2015 or 2016. The first game where I _had_ to use a guide was TR3. First time was in the London level. There's a section on the outside where I couldn't figure out where the hell was I supposed to go. It's that part where there's one or two big boxes on the ground, sort of a big alley between 2 buildings. Also the beginning of Antarctica, at that part where you need to go back to the beginning with the snow mobile.

The only thing I didn't like about TR2 was the amount of human enemies. There's just too many, and they're pretty hard to dodge consistently. There's a pretty cool way to dodge fire, but because of the tank controls, you can end up falling to your death: run towards the guy, jump over him and turn around in mid-air. You can kill almost everyone without taking too much damage, but it's not really foolproof. Sometimes you fall into the water, down a hole or there just isn't any space to run.

Weirdly, although TR4 really felt like it needed a guide, because of the interconnected stages, I didn't need to use any guides.

TR Chronicles is a downright mess. It's not a bad game at all, but it's so short, and sometimes so braindead that you'll think it's just scrapped levels from prior games. Well, in a sense, they are scrapped levels.

If you're playing on PC, I recommend getting the expansion packs, specifically for TR1 and 2. The only expansion level I didn't like was TR4's, where it's just a single, very easy level. It was promotional material for something, I think.

>> No.5616417

>>5615767
It's what the other anon said - they are going to simply shelve it indefinitevely.
The whole point of Eidos buy-out by Squenix was to gain their library. They've used said library to profit on established brands (which is the only thing Squenix can do as a company) and each time given brand stopped being a cash cow, they've simply shelved it. In case of Thief it took just one game, in case of TR it took three. If Rise would sell slightly worse than it did, they would end up the reboot at 2 games, so at least now all the shit from reboot is wrapped up with three games.
And the reboots for Eidos titles are important here, because this is how you alter copyrights into your favour - not just making a sequel, but changing the "source material" into your own. They can now legally claim that TR is theirs and always was theirs. So good luck pulling something like IO Interactive did with Hitman (breaking out and going on their own before Squenix enforced reboot on them), because now it's literally impossible to get the copyrights from Squenix unless they decide to sell them for some exorbant sum.

People are just tired of developers using cheap pandering to sell shit games. If a female lead character isn't a scantily clad supermodel, then faggots like you cry censorship and hyper feminism. No one cares about your shit opinions anymore. And quite frankly, I didn't care for this kind of shit when I was growing up with retro games either. I mean, it was fine that Lara was a big boobed bimbo because that wasn't the sole focus of the game, and the games were actually pretty damn good. But then the marketing department took over and tried to sell the franchise through sex appeal alone, and they really fucked up by doing this. In the WAD file for Tomb Raider 1, there's a nipple texture. So I'm guessing at one point there WAS a nude "code" (but it was only in developer builds as a joke or something a dev put in because he was bored one afternoon), and never any commercial release of the game. All it would take is for a developer to offhandedly say that such a code existed without mentioning any specifics, that person tells another person, and eventually it became an urban myth.

I'd say nu-lara went from a 6 with the first to a 7.5 with the last game, getting rid of things that made the first a chore, and sticking more to atmosphere and delivering a story at a quick pace.
I enjoyed all nu-Lara so far, I'm still lightly irritated when remembering the original series and even the many games that I've actually all liked, even AoD, but they're still good fun.

My little sister and girlfriend both love nu-lara which is great to see, my little sister even finished all 3 and then went to some fantasy fair dressed up as nu-lara which was fun to see. I guess I'm just happy they're keeping such an old franchise from dying, maybe eventually we'll get something that is made for us salty /vr/ boomers.

This, people don't realize that when we played Tomb Raider, we couldn't really sit behind a computer and jack off to porn whenever we wanted, watching a big breasted Lara Croft run around in short khaki hotpants was as much action as most of us were getting. Tomb Raider was never about objectification, not were these old games ever, horny men would just buy your shit only to possibly get a glimpse at some nudity, which is why the comics sold really well for doing exactly that.

I feel betrayed with nu-lara that they refuse to even recognize this, I don't need big boobied and lots of suggestive moaning, but we can at least recognize that Lara Croft used to be one of the sexiest video game characters to a lot of us.

Just beware that some parts of the classic Tomb Raiders can become a long boring slog, with moments of genius in between. The vehicle driving parts are particularly bad. Speak for yourself, Anon. Your lack of social progress isn't an excuse for developers shoehorning fanservice into these games. Not everybody wants overt sexuality forced into literally every aspect of their hobbies or daily lives.

In TR1, find elevation to deal with enemies. Most can't climb and don't have hitscan attacks. Using back/side jumps to evade attacks works too but it's less safe and you can still get caught occasionally. In 2 you want to move in close and keep rolling while shooting to force the goons to constantly reposition. If you don't do this every encounter will be a DPS race. 1-4 are fantastic, you're in for a good time. IMO 2 is the worst of the four due to gimmick levels, tons of hitscan enemies, barely any tombs and too much action instead of puzzles.

When's the last time you played? The levels are literally mostly tombs, caverns and temples. There's very little in the way of urban landscape.

It was a big deal when the game first came out, because people who had mastered the original TR were excited about taking some of the action into modern architecture. But that doesn't even account for half of the game's content.

I played it last month. The great wall is a tomb, the temple of xian is a tomb, and catacombs of the talion/ice palace too. The rest are not. Venice isn't, the opera house isn't, the water levels aren't (rigs and sunken ships are not tombs), and most of the tibet areas are either monasteries or outdoor snowmobile shenanigans. TR3 has this problem to a lesser extent but at least you're usually progressing towards tombs in each area you visit.

10 of the 17 TR2 levels take place in either modern or occupied manmade structures. I specifically remember on my first playthrough around 2000 being hyped getting past the water levels and into tibet, only to get stuck with a gimmick snowmobile level as the introduction. Then you move to the monastery which again is a gimmick level. The last five levels of the game are great but it's not half. It's not even 1/3rd. IMO only the great wall and the xian temple levels are great.

old Crystal Dynamics Lara was great and faithful to the original's

NuLara isn't even the same character. She's not from aristocratic background iirc.

No idea. That's kinda ridiculous price spread. All volumes costed the same in my comicbook store.
Availability, maybe?

Yep, you're probably right. But why 3rd issue is cheaper than the second? Did people lose interest midway the series?

She does still live in a mansion in the most recent three Crystal Dynamics games.

I mean I don’t know about all that but I’m going by her mansion that you explore in the bonus content for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

>FUCK OFF I DON'T CARE IF IT'S AGAINST THE RULES, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS
Combine that with that thread of people talking about how they come to /vr/ not because they have an interest in retro games, but just because they view /v/ to be a shithole due to memespam, and then try to explain how a bunch of /v/irgins invading and acting like they are on /v/ will NOT turn /vr/ into /v/.
Literally retards going to drive a board into the ground just like their homeboard, just because they haven't realized THEY are the problem.

Maybe? Because while volumes 3 and 4 weren't as good and the first, those were still really fun.
This reminds me - I really need to re-read the comics again. Haven't read them in a while. There were some pretty nice issues - like the one when Lara dies and get trapped in Egyptian underworld or something like that. And writers were legitimately creative in justifying drawing Lara without clothes.

Nigga, we are talking TopCow here. They were ALWAYS creative about this stuff. And if they weren't, they had enough self-awarness to turn it around into a joke.

If Lara was disowned, where did she get that big manor which she refers to as "home"?

>> No.5649969

Doesn't being disowned means you don't inherit, rather than being thrown out?

I have no clue about British laws, but I think it would be a logical thing to do.
Also it's 2 weeks already, thread is on autosage.

>> No.5650104

>>5650073
Not sure myself and on top of that I'm ESL, so go figure. But at least that's what disowning (in literal translation) means in my language - losing ability to inherit.
As for the mansion, nobody said it's her parent's or related with her crest. Could be just as well her own accquisition. She's rich one way or another.
Fuck this autosage system. It solved nothing, while bringing new problems

Bye Lara, 'til next time.
