What do you think about filters/shaders on emulators?

What do you think looks best?

CRT shaders are getting pretty good. Once they figure out how to emulate pixel bleed in 4K and emulate refresh rates on faster monitors, we might get something better.

Otherwise, I use nothing.

Doesn't RetroArch support freesync for that purpose? Change refresh rate in real time so that it matches the platform?

I don't like the ones that try to replicate scan lines and CRTs but some of the more artsy ones can be fun.

I like CRT-Royale-256-composite for SNES. It looks pretty close to the real thing.

That's phosphor bleed. Phosphors are not pixels, and pixels do not map directly to them.

Depends on the filter, depends on the game, depends on your monitor, it just fuckin' depends. I use them, but I can't just tell people "yes, I use filters, you should to" because what works is different for everyone - and there's no reason anybody should have to get a proper filter set up if they don't want to.

The only things I let slide are resolution scalers, framerate improvements, or things like removing sprite limits.
I'm the kind of person that gets annoyed at LENS flare and motion blur being in games already, so when you start emulating imperfections of other physical things, I'm not happy with that either.

I understand the argument for the cases where the art was designed around some of this, but I find that to be the exception rather than the norm.

if you sit a reasonable amount of distance away from your TV you don't need them at all and the image quality will reward you with a sharper and snappier picture.
filters look like smeared butter shit. back then we didn't have a fucking choice with CRT TVs so we had to take and accept things as they were.
this will get me a lot of (You)s considering on which board I'm posting but the picture quality of CRT TVs was utter dog shit compared to what we have now and yes I owned several Trinitrons (PC monitors as well as TVs)

Yeah, it "wasn't what the developers intended", but who gives a fuck about that?
I'm nearsighted and astigmatic, and being able to have a crystal clear image with no distortion or warping in image or color appeals a lot to me.
I don't want to look at a game and constantly feel like I'm not wearing my glasses, I already hate 3D screens and chromatic aberration effects.

It depends on the display, so on your end sharp pixels might look ok. Depending on how big the display is / high res / viewing distance it might look better or worse. Blurrying out the picture too much in order to make it look more "authentic" is not always the best approach.

The worst shit in my opinion is fake thick scanlines. I have a CRT TV I could stare at for a good period of time without noticing and yet there's a lot of CRT shaders with scanlines that will make me want to look away after a few minutes. And this is sitting considerably close to that CRT. I feel the effect is sometimes exaggerated and requires that you're watching that across the entire room. I don't even think playing on an HDTV it would look all that good either.

The whole point of "emulation" is putting something on a system it wasn't meant for. So what's the problem with "emulating" the TV that we all remember playing them on?

>> No.5626787

>>5623080
I don't care about them at all. I remember pressing my face against the TV as a kid and seeing the "pixels", but that's not how I remember my games looking like. My imagination made them look better than what my crappy TV could display.
At this point, I'm more interested in seeing the raw images the artists worked with.

>> No.5626924

>>5626751
I think there's anything wrong with it inherently, but shaders add another layer to the emulation. You're not only emulating the console, but now the display too.

It's just a matter of preference. To me, no matter how complex and "accurate" these crt shaders get they will always just be some cool novelty. I could never see myself playing through a whole game using them. If I really feel like the crt look is that important, I use a real CRT, otherwise I don't bother and don't use any filters.
