Seriously though, this guy fucked himself by spending $13750 for a shitty cancelled 30 year old videogame. There's nothing cool about what he did. Nobody wanted to play the game. Videogames become art when they can be emulated properly.

Anything PS3 and beyond will never be emulatable, so all those games are just shallow entertainment that will stop being available at some point in the future, depend on their defunct hardware to survive and will never be playable on a PC 100 years from now. So they are not art. Just cheap entertainment with an expiration date.

>All forms of art are reproduceable.
No, or at least not unless you extend "reproducible" incredibly broadly (in which case games are also reproducible). Stage magic is an art, but the entire goal is to ensure that audience CAN'T replicate what you just did.

Also, emulation isn't a requirement for reproduction - building equivalent hardware would have the same effect.
Also also, every video game theoretically CAN be emulated. It's just a question of difficulty and performance.

That's the main reason current archival is so good. With things like records and VHS recordings, there was a huge issue with each copy being slightly more degraded than the last. True preservation was impossible. But now, even if hard drives keep dying, we can just keep transferring the information to new ones without any form of information loss. The only way hard drives dying would be an issue is if every hard drive that's storing the file died at once (or nobody cares to copy the file).

Cartridges, owing to their inherent shielding, and if also stored inside of something with density, may stand a chance of withstanding an EMP blast, but exposed discs (nevermind disks*) don't stand a chance, but it would depend on the intensity of the blast. heh, but if that ever happened, we'd have way more problems than trying to play games.

2. The industry becomes shaped by the protos once they're known regardless of whether they're dumped or not.

Collectors who hate things that make their "treasure" lose market value?
Quelle surprise.

It was a matter of time until some salty nip had enough of the plundering of Akibahara and Japan of old games by western collectors who want to drive up prices and artificial scarcity and the games will end up in a trash compactor along with the rest of the attic's when they die, not back in nip stores.

Nah, there's nothing wrong with this. You get to download almost any game you want at no cost instantly off the public internet and people like this get to buy out the sole copy of a game and keep it off the public internet. That's how a good free market system should work for information as a commodity.

Sometimes the company notices and the auction gets cancelled and forever unreleased, like the Resident Evil 0 N64 version, or that time the Lufia 3 ps1 source code got auctioned.
Fucking millennials who think everything needs to go viral.

Just earlier this year something very similar nearly happened with a rare leak of Nintendo first party games (TWELVE unreleased Chinese GBA versions, note that there's even more still lost) and that time one of the bidders wanted (really, really wanted) to secure them so that they're never dumped, and they get sent immediately to Nintendo of America to "release officially" on the fucking Wii U (itself unreleased in China or HK)
He noticed it BECAUSE the auction went viral by "preservation accounts" and actually won them! The only reason why they got dumped at all is that the seller was selling repros of it, so there were second chances with other buyers.

I swear, it's as if they WANT the drama and butthurt and tragic preservation hero act to happen. Then again they ARE tofu-addled shit-for-brains twitter drama addicts, so foresight and good decision making isn't their strong point. Can't do game preservation when you don't even have what it takes for self-preservation, jesus.

Not really a meaningful comparison. Even $7k is insanely expensive for a prototype, let alone twice that. A prototype of a popular game might break $1k, depending on the market and who is looking. They can never actually POINT to anything he's done that is terrible, or anything they themselves have contributed. Because they really don't have any valid complaint.

All the hate and rage? It's because retarded emu-babbys are entitled cunts who whine nonstop about how the stuff they get for free isn't good enough. None of this hatred for byuu existed before he changed the way his SNES emulator handles roms. It was a retarded change, but if you wanted to use the latest version of his emulator, you had to deal with it. This was before Snes9X was updated to fix the problems that byuu's emulator didn't have. Since then Snes9X has been brought up to be on par with byuu's emulator in terms of accuracy, and he's gone back to the standard way of dealing with roms for his emulator. So, for a short period of time, any retarded emubabby who wanted the most accurate(ie, proper emulation in about 5 or so games that no one ever talks about) SNES emulator was forced to deal with byuu's funky rom handling for his emulator. And for that, he's worse than satan and needs to have people screaming at him nonstop. Yep.

This.
We have people making fan games and shit that get DMCA'd because the devs like to broadcast their email addresses and show off 300 videos instead of just getting it done.
The guy that bought it said he didn't want to get it in the hands of dumpers, but how would he know if this specific game was never dumped? No one shuts the fuck up about it. It's like having pirates like byuu and the rest, trying so hard to act like they're following Copyright laws, but then globally broadcast that they plan to crowdfund a dump to release on the internet. At this point, you're being attention whores. Tons of prototypes have been dumped without broadcasting it to everyone, but it's these privileged idiots posting on a website like Twitter where Copyright is barely enforced. I wouldn't be surprised if his account was banned for promoting piracy on any site that's not run by total retards.

Pretty much, yes. He dumps it, then sends them off to someone else. Considering these idiots don't trust him or any claim he makes, I'm not sure why they're mad he doesn't post the ROMs directly. They'll probably accuse of him altering the code and spreading bad dumps. Half the process is about having multiple people dump the same game and proving they can all get the same hash back. If not, there's a problem.

Yep.

when your autistic rage and political bigotry leads you to

- drive GPL emulators to relicense to less restrictive sellable emulators of THEIR work (reicast) or relicense to closed source altogether (redream)

because they're tired of your bullshit, your commie hacktivism you think entitle you to police, nitpick, call names (ignorant, incompetent, traitor just because you associate with dem closed source emudevs! criminal, and phone their work too) for distributing their work in a way that doesn't satisfy your pedantry for one single time and one single misstep from that license, which is more like a pact selling your soul to the EmuStalin's GNU-lag than a normal open source license.

That license file isn't a "kick me, internet" sign, and what do you know when you push solo devs past the brink they can just make a CLI and take the weeks to gut their project of all traces of that cuckery GPL pact that enables shitstains to order them around and even have the gall to tell them they're not allowed to make money (even when the licenses say no such thing and the buyers are compliant) while retroarch, byuu, mame, and friends flirt with dem sweet $$$ opportunities just fine.

like srsly, no one should complain about cemu at this point. The developer opened a github account clearly meant to upload sources on, as a delayed model, and then a prerelease version as an executable only.

Butthurt open source faggots didn't accept anything short of an IMMEDIATE source release, so they reported the github account and got it SHUT DOWN. And then years later... like what did you expect? what's your goddamn thought process? Did you think by not only ordering him around but inconveniencing the way he was to upload the source, you'd get him to do it faster?

So hilarious his first critics then made Yuzu a patreon model emulator too despite explicitly being against GPL (so actually illegal) and they used that Botw game to shill for it.
