And that's why I don't understand when people say that pixel crap indie games are "retro style" just because of the pixel art.
If pixel art is retro, then realistic graphics are retro too. If Owlboy is retro, then Tekken 7 is retro.
And if everything is retro, nothing is retro.

Late 6th gen, early 7th gen is the perfect match of the technology being there too make semi-realistic graphics while still having a lot of artistry in the modeling and texturing. Too many games these days have the same heavily post-processed look and heavily rely on PBR and other rendering techniques.

I never had a cpc or speccy as a kid, but i enjoy a handful of games from each console. Its surprising what you can find if you are actually interested in retro games and are interested, intrigued and stimulated by older games that make the best of what they had and still delivered something that in my eyes is completely playable today. You have a problem with older games, thats your problem. Theres plenty if worthwhile 80 computer games. If you cant see that, youre a moron. Im not defending bad games, im just pointing out the obvious to an oblivious dipshit.

I'd say Thunderblade on the 3DS is the most impressive 3D game I've ever played.

Its really a pity its stuck on a tiny, washed out screen like the 3DS. This goes for all Sega 3D classics. Great ports, poor platform.

It was the last gen before graphical fidelity reached a point where the visuals begame the most valued quality in the mainstream gaming industry.

PS2 era was full of those weird, lanky models whose limbs folded like paper to feign articulation, and I think most PS2 games aged worse than most PS1 games. Then again you have some games like Monster House which looked like 7th gen titles running on a glorified DVD player.

Cel-shading is the peak of polygonal graphics. It has the same level of charm as 2D sprite games.

Honestly? Probably pretty recently.

RE2 was the first game that really sold me on motion captured performances being something which added to a game, plus the raw detail and just how well it ran on my mediocre system.
These performances flesh out basically every see them once side character from the original game and added actual subtleties to characters rather than being a glorified movie
i.e. Heavy rain and anything Quantic Dream has done in the last 10 years.

Luigi's mansion and Rogue Leader on Gamecube were peak "WOW!" for me when graphics were still advancing. Those were the first two games i played in that gen and i couldn't believe what i was looking at, but the effect faded quickly. From that point onward graphics became more of a "how much closer can we get it to looking real" competition and i started caring less and less about the visuals. Then i really started missing SNES and N64 and thus my transformation into a retro gamer was complete.

>>5623418
I love the way Wind Waker looks, but there's masses of room for improvement there too. We need to get past the phase of trying for photorealism and bsck to stylised games and then things will really take off.

>> No.5624076

6th gen. There used to be so many different paths to giving a game "good graphics", because the tools developers had couldn't model reality accurately, leaving them to choose what subjectively looked the best. But now for each aspect of a game's graphics, there's one method that's objectively better at modelling reality than the others. The best way to handle materials is PBR, the best way to handle reflections is raytracing, your best bet for contact shadows is a SSAO variant, and a subsurface scattering shader for translucency.
