I played some random wads like the old Aliens TC when I was younger, but was never super into wadding.
Trying to get more into it now. Just digging through the OP and Cacowards over the past couple months I found these and played through most of them. Liked some disliked others.

Thing is I have no art skills, 0, none.

One solution could be using a 3D skeleton model as a base for the hands, but what would be a good way to take those and paint over them in a way that does not look disgusting once ported to Doom? I have no idea about color or shading and all that stuff

The more I play SIGIL, the more I'm loving it. This is much better than I initially thought. For starter, I love that most levels have their distinct, unique themes.

M1: Tutorial style level with you building up a bridge ahead of you by shooting eyes. Meanwhile secrets are in supercool areas with dark scenery.

M2: It looks like a place build of flesh and blood. Love how the orange holograms mark the teleport sites in the dark pit.

M3: Hellish prison with hanging cages and you can deconstruct the whole thing.

M4: Very unique with the three paths with different type of gameplay need, and you have to finish them to proceed.

M5: Dark, hellish city of sorts, large buildings in eerie scenery. The music is already legendary as well.

M6: Two parts, with the first being very bloody flesh and dark corridors, the other is a really amazing looking maze built on Minotaur's Labirynth.

M9: Well, this kinda stinks.

M7: This one has no real theme, unlike the others, but it's an all around adventure/gauntlet style level with a dubious ending.

M8: Typical boss level with some very fun Lost Soul infighting. The corridors are larger, more suitable for bosses.

I mean, come on, how can you not like it? I bet all you autists memorized the level layouts after one playthrough. Bring on the new Doom Ii episode John.

>>5614029
>>5615000
I'll post some of my autoload essentials that aren't included in yours:
>footsteps.pk3
Does what it says on the tin. Doomguy is no longer a floating gun. Now he's a gun with audible feet.
>healthwarning.pk3
If you are running Babel, you don't need this because it's already included in Babel. I find the audio warning at low health to be super useful always.
>Sprite Shadows
Does what it says on tin
>Damage Direction Overlay
Shows from where you've been shot and for how much damage on the borders of the screen, so you don't have to look everywhere for the thing shooting you.
>DamNums
Because it's satisfying to see floating numbers of the damage you do when you shoot
>DoomSFX
Better vanilla weapon sounds for Doomguy. Can't play without it anymore, otherwise the guns feel weak.
>TargetSpy
Very customizable, allows you to see health of enemies and optionally draws a target frame over them (I find this replaces the Reactive Crosshair functionality like I said above - although they might be of reduced use when you are playing with perma mouselook because you already know what you're aiming at)

And finally, one that might be an odd pick for some but I really dig it:

>AllClear_HM
plays the droning tense theme from hotline miami when all enemies in a map have been killed, along with showing a prompt above saying "All Enemies Killed" or something like that.

5615102

Ok, so the map appears to be working just fine, with minimal performance impact too (like 2-5%)

There are some tweaks that I'm sure would be easy to implement:
1) A CVAR to turn it on/off
Or better yet a bind that switches between off/no background/with background mode (like OG GZDoom automap)

Maybe a switch CVAR that makes minimap to turn itself off when actual Overlay/Automap is used?

2) Minimap appears to pull colors from full automap colors, and not Overlay map colors.
Maybe make a switch on whether to pull colors from full map or an overlay.
Or better - 2 separate switches that determine from which color sets it pulls in WithBackground and WithoutBackground modes separately

3) The maximum range at which Minimap lines are rendered appears to be insufficient. It would be great if you could set it with a CVAR, or bind it to change along with ATMP_MapScale CVAR

4) Maybe allow to change the size of map arrow, or its style to the original (smaller and thinner) map arrow?

I like reactive crosshair because it's hard to abuse
With normal crosshairs, you always have a reference for where the middle of the screen is and have nearly 100% perfect aim
Reactive crosshair is only really effective at close ranges, the farther your target, the less useful it is. I think this better represents actually aiming, and when you do get those far shots off it's really satisfying
I only use target spy and damnums for less serious plays like DRLA or Legendoom

>normal crosshairs, you always have a reference for where the middle of the screen is and have nearly 100% perfect aim
I don't see how a point in the middle of the screen could be considered abuse. If you're playing vanilla, you're gonna be looking for the autoaim lockons, if you're playing freelook, your aim will depend on your hand and reflexes alone

A lot of the anger on that came from how TNT was originally meant to be free, and that nobody knew who bought the rights to it, people likely assuming it was some scummy fly by night company looking to make a buck.

Most of that anger was sated when it was revealed that TNT in fact got licensed as an official Doom product, and would also be bundled with yet another 32 map megawad (one which many will argue was even better than TNT).

I get the impression that Romero is a very charismatic person that loves the spotlight. This is not a bad thing perse, but it may have been the case that the other members of the team were not so public themselves, so he had a natural opportunity to become the rockstar and the face behind those games, while other people that worked as hard or harder than him were quieter/kept to themselves more. I would love to be corrected about that though, I don't have a single fact to back that up.

BABEL is great, but it still has a long way to go in terms of balance.

Hard Doom is basically where BABEL wants to be right now, as in terms of balance it's kind of perfect, but still adds a new level of difficulty and atmosphere to the game.

BABEL is fucking amazing with the PSX Converstion, but it still has some shortcomings i..e gimping most forms of longer range combat and removing anything close to the stunlock low damage accuracy capabilities of the chaingun. This is largely intentional, but it still doesn't feel quite right yet.. I think a lot of this has to do with the FEAR system and having to try to make something to account for the reduction in stunlocking enemies, which he hasn't quite found yet.

I threw a few ideas up on here a while ago to him and he was pretty receptive.

Also try Dark Universe pt 1 with Hard Doom and a flashlight mod. I recommend Beam Flashlight as it doesn't reveal too much but lets you see up close just fine. The concept of it just gels with the setting without disrupting much at all.

>1) A CVAR to turn it on/off
Yeah, that struck me after I uploaded lol.
>Or better yet a bind that switches between off/no background/with background mode (like OG GZDoom automap)
Neat idea; dunno how to do this. Will look into it for a future update once it's stable.

>Maybe a switch CVAR that makes minimap to turn itself off when actual Overlay/Automap is used?
That's an excellent idea!

>2) Minimap appears to pull colors from full automap colors, and not Overlay map colors.
Oh my god, there's an entire extra full set of map colors? I might or might not do this, because it's kind of a pain and also would decrease performance a bit. Will give it a look though.

>3) The maximum range at which Minimap lines are rendered appears to be insufficient. It would be great if you could set it with a CVAR, or bind it to change along with ATMP_MapScale CVAR
This is already on the todo list!

>4) Maybe allow to change the size of map arrow, or its style to the original (smaller and thinner) map arrow?
I'll scale it along with map zoom (clamped to sensible levels though).

>>5615941

A pack of 4 imps on pedestals is a bigger threat than a room full of cacos right now due to the state of the rocket launcher and chaingun. Enemies who are distant and harder to hit, are a MASSIVE threat right now, especially if they are closely grouped together. This doesn't gel with a lot of maps and drastically increases the DPS of stuff like the shotgunners or imps on pedestals in DemonIzed

Found the levellocals struct, which has a line array for the level. I then looked up the line struct, which contains two vertex structs. Looking up the vertex struct I found how to get the position vector. Then I just iterated through the lines, using screen.drawline with the vertex vectors of each line as start and end point argument. getting the math for scale, zoom, position and rotation origin took the most time.

It takes a bit to get used to how all the gzdoom.pk3 classes and files are structured, but once you get the hang of it you'll know exactly where to look for what you need, which is primarily how you git gud at it. I think one of the bigger issues with modding is simply not knowing that a function or variable for whatever you want to do exists. The rest is just putting together bits and pieces.

Sometimes it does take some brute-forcing, but I don't recall doing that much. Usually what's hard is finding the right approach. There is no set way to do what you want, but depending on your approach it might be easier or harder to expand upon what you write. Programming in general is easy to learn and hard to master imo. ZScript is pretty much the same, except it has some retarded limitations that piss me off sometimes and make things harder, hackier, or simply impossible, but you'll only encounter those when you start doing more advanced stuff. For the most part it's breddy gud.

Happy to hear that! Another advice I could give is to just open gzdoom.pk3 and explore. Don't even have to look for anything specific, just browse the classes for shits n giggles. You'll see a lot of things that'd make you go "Oh, wow, that's been a thing all this time!? Fuck yeah! This actually gives me an idea..."

Unfortunately, the documentation is sometimes lacking, but in case you're not sure what a native function does, try searching for the actual C++ sauce over at the Github repo. Most functions have a "P_" prefix, for example GiveBody (P_GiveBody in the source), so finding those shouldn't be too hard. A lot of times there are comments above the P_* functions that may help guide you. Once you get better at programming, or, more important, the logic behind it (it's bound to happen if you get into modding, trust me), you can read and understand what the native functions do, even if you're not a professional programmer or even fluent in C++. Hell, I mainly code in C# and am pretty much a codelet when it comes to C++, but I can understand what's happening most of the time. It's really not all that magical, don't let people tell you otherwise. It's not.

is your musical taste generally in line with Doom?

>> No.5616601

Kek at filename. Yeah, I never really liked the idea that ZScript requires a fuckton of knowledge and/or experience. I picked it up right after it became a thing and back when I knew fuck all about programming in general (had experience with DECORATE, though, but that's a hack so it probably doesn't count). You will encounter bugs, bugs that don't make any god damn sense, bugs you'll probably spend hours trying to figure out how to fix, and when you finally do you'll wish dishonor upon Randi or Graf's cow. But god does it feel nice when it just fucking works in the end. It's a rewarding pain in the ass (no homo).

One other thing you could add to the ASMR is "start small". Looking at the big picture may often times be confusing and discouraging. Been there, done that. I think a lot of people are afraid of ZScript because it exposes a fuckton of functionality and may seem overwhelming. I like to take a different approach - it *allows* you to do something that you may not necessarily have to use *now*. If you've worked with DECORATE, you could convert your code without improving it and work from there. Need to make the player regenerate ammo? Slap an "override void Tick()" in the player class and get it over with in less than a minute instead of trying to get ACS to work or doing that in the Spawn state. And this is just a very basic example that still has multiple approaches to it. *Basic* ZScript is DECORATE with semicolons. Start with that. One could go "ACKCHYUALLY" on this, but that'd be missing the whole point of "start small". Like my C# programming lecturer once said @ the "static" keyword: "Let's consider this is magic for now. We'll go back to how it works later when we've covered the more basic stuff."

Modify existing entities. That's how I started out with modding in the first place, long before discovering ZDoom. But in the case of ZDoom, take the SSG for example.

>Create a new .pk3 file or folder (I'd say use .wad, but that's actually more complicated as it involves markers and ancient shit for sprites, textures, etc.)
>Create new entry (SLADE) or text file (normal folder); You can load mod folders in GZDoom, doesn't have to be a .pk3 or .zip.
>Rename newly-created file/entry to DECORATE.txt.
>Copy-paste the entire DECORATE definition from here https://zdoom.org/wiki/Classes:SuperShotgun
>Ignore the yellow rectangle at the top of the page, as what we're doing is for educational purposes and we want to overwrite everything we've inherited anyway. Learn now, git gud later.
>Change the very first line from "ACTOR SuperShotgun : DoomWeapon" to "ACTOR NewSuperShotgun : SuperShotgun replaces SuperShotgun".
>Edit stuff like frame duration and sprites/frames (see Actor States link below), and notice how that influences the weapon in-game.
>Look up the action functions you see in the code here: https://zdoom.org/wiki/Action_functions to understand what they do and what the values you change mean.
>Ask if stuck. It's really hard learning some of the things on your own as a newbie. You'd have to reverse engineer a lot of mods to really get good at it. t. lone wolf who doesn't like bugging people with stuff and suffers from it.
>Leave comments in code. You have no idea how thankful I am to my past self for leaving comments when I later come back to the code and have completely forgotten how the fuck it works or what it does.

This page is actually useful: https://zdoom.org/wiki/DECORATE especially the Inheritance part.

Heyo I'm back for a bit maybe.
>Are you planning on continuing work on Babel or is it more or less done in your eyes?
Both, sorta. I took a break a while back to focus on writing, but then got like 200k words into the book I was making and realized I fucked the ending up pre-emptively so now I've gotta redo it (which also works as first editing pass). I guess since I'm still feeling like a fucking moron from that I'll come back and do some babel work, but it's still mostly done in my eyes. I've had a lot of tweak work sitting very unpolished on my hard drive for a while now.
>We were discussing it last thread, like how much many people seem to like it, although long range combat seems a bit limited to the pistol - and how the fear mechanic could perhaps be better if the chance of it happening was higher?
I'm super glad people do like it, even if I've been gone a bit. On the topic of those, some of it's intentional and some isn't. I've had this hairbrained scheme to rework the fear system almost entirely for a while now but I'm worried about performance and gameplay impacts, and things are pretty tuned right now and the hundreds of hours of playtesting I've done goes out the window if I change it too much. The idea is that instead of a fixed threshold for fear for each monster, it's instead calculated based on HP and remaining HP, as well as possibly hit damage as a percentage of HP. The calculations would get a lot more complex, which is why I fear for the framerate, but it would probably make it more interesting than it is currently (which is really a system to reward aggressive play in a mod that otherwise discourages it). Still, not a change for the next tweak revision at least.

The pistol is going to get its increased pain chance back from whichever earlier unreleased or released version had it. No new weapons planned since it's hard to keep them all relevant as it is already. So the pistol being the only reliable long range damage early on is intentional?

Since pump shotgun engagements at long range become impossible and chaingun sniping is gone, it seems like small enemies at long range become a much bigger threat than a bunch of big enemies at close range - and like you said, since fear rewards aggressive play but it's so easy to die in Metatron (UV -fast), I find myself playing it a bit more cautiously, more towards the HD spectrum even. With the difference that I can't engage long range targets so I have to pick close quarters fights only. Is this the intended balance you were going for? Am I playing it wrong?

different anon here, but I played Sigil with your Reactive Crosshairs mod and found something kinda funny - the eye shoot switches no longer need to be shot, but merely looked at, because the reactive crosshair behaves like a projectile shooting out of doomguy that activates the eyes as soon as you look at them

Just thought I'd let you know. I didn't mind it. I did try to fix it by adding a -ACTIVATEIMPACT on the projectile in Slade as an anon suggested, but I guess I must have done it wrong because it didn't seem to fix it

Oh absolutely, that's the whole point of doing it, it just would be the polar opposite of fun most likely. Lots of repeat comments from repeated code, lots of figuring out how I did a thing because I forgot exactly what I did, then trying to explain why I did it (like group fear reduction frame offsets, good god). Possibly lots of me realizing dumb shit I did that seemed smart at the time :^)
>>5617057
>So the pistol being the only reliable long range damage early on is intentional?
I'd say the SMG is also quite reliable, just not perfect, but yes generally. Doom is a mid-range/close-range combat game, so naturally I made weapons that tended more towards that. The pistol is the exception just because it needed something special (and was originally going to be the rifle), and because *technically* you might need it. Personally I almost always go for regular SMG and rarely have any sniping issues because enemies that are super far away are still firing bullets which have travel time, so it's simple to run from cover to cover.
>it seems like small enemies at long range become a much bigger threat than a bunch of big enemies at close range
I don't really get that impression myself but if you have some maps that showcase this I can test them.
>but it's so easy to die in Metatron (UV -fast)
Yeah in hindsight adding those meme difficulties was more of a screwup on my part. You should play on Elohim, the two above it are intended to punish you.
>Am I playing it wrong?

Half-life is the opposite of fun, it has THE worst gunplay in FPS history, nothing comes close to the sheer terribleness of it. It's a tech-demo that retards ate up.
Quake on the other hand is a classic with an amazing soundtrack, enemies that actually react to being shot, great gunplay and a great artstyle

I think I've gone off the deep end
On top of the mod soup I made for myself for AV I also decided to start messing around with stuff like SC-55 and Arachno Soundfont to try and compliment Term's MIDI addon, I dig the results so far.

I might pop out a video guide to help newer people get their feet wet on this sort of thing, something maybe like "Customizing your Doom experience" or something sounds kinda gay tho
It will be a bit of a glorified excuse to spread the word of our lord and savior Vanilla Essence, I don't think I will be able to play classic maps without it anymore, I love the chunkiness of it

What do I have to do to convert Smooth Doom's weapon and effect sprites to TrueColor, so that they're compatible with megawads like Ancient Ayys, BTSX, etc?

Is it just a matter of converting to PNG, or do I have to do something else?

Pls advice

Guys, I just had a really stupid idea, but I still want to hear your feedback on this

Has anyone ever made a Doom mod that is about keeping in rhythm with MIDIs? Sort of like Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Was just thinking it might be a silly but neat idea, that you can only shoot in tune with the beat of the music, and if you're out of beat the bullets don't do damage. Is such a thing even possible? And even if it were possible, would it be fun?

Essentially not possible because music isn't a thing that the playsim has easy access too. I suppose you could have each sound in the song be individually played on various channels by a playsim object, then line up everything to that, but that requires a powerful autism that most people don't have.

A recent discovery in Doom 64 allows youto warp from one of the secret maps (The Lair) instantly to the credits. This is my final product speedrun using this. Doom 64 is now the fastest full game run of any of the major retro Doom games. When I first picked this game up in 2014, the fastest completion of Watch Me Die was 1 hour 8 minutes in real time by peaches. With the aid of many new glitches, improved routing, and better skill, the warpless record run now is 36:58 real time (32:32 IGT) and the warped run is less than half that now. I am happy to have given this game the attention it deserves for being by far the best console Doom game. Hope you all enjoy the run.

1:37 - The Terraformer
1:27 - Main Engineering
0:47 - Holding Area
1:26 - Tech Center
1:23 - Alpha Quadrant

0:11 - Final Outpost
1:27 - Even Simpler
1:18 - The Bleeding
1:56 - Terror Core
0:26 - Altar of Pain

nah, so when you kill all the imps in that room, the small pedestal with the blue key rises from the ground. when the pedestal is fully raised, you cannot climb on top of it. but in the process of it raising, you can run onto it and hop onto the rail on the outside that way. then you need two very precise strafes to get around the pillars and hop over the rail in the spot that there is no invis wall blocking you.

you actually aren't truly out of bounds here, only outside of where you normally are supposed to be. it is possible to clip OOB but I only do it in the non warped run for a couple insane glitches exclusive to that run

I figured out how to make it work btw, it wasn't the PLAYPAL file

I needed to add doom2.wad as a base resource archive from the Edit menu of SLADE. Then, converting sprites to PNG TrueColor just werked (TM).

/agdg/ nodev here. Ain't that hard. Just create a timer then mark the beats. Compare the keypress time to the beat. Amplify the damage based on how close the player was to the beat. Reset the timer on music loop.

>> No.5618082

>>5618070
Except no my dude, that's not how music in this game works. You can't put all that logic in the UI layer with the music player and have it affect gameplay, and you can't pause the music when you pause the game.
Just like make game instead of being wrong ok bb?

WHY was Between Levels used only once in Doom 2?

>> No.5618116

>>5618082
but who cares about the interaction with the music player? doesn't need to touch it. If the music keeps playing on pause then just let the timer roll. Or compare it to the system clock. Just seems easy to me. like real easy.

In case anyone cares, I'm uploading an edited version of current Smooth Doom that only has Weapons and Effects (no monsters, no HUD changes), and they are in TrueColor

This should make SmoothDoom plug and play with any megawad that changes colour palettes (like Ancient Ayys or BTSX). It should also be loadable anywhere in the load order without affecting your HUD, since the HUD elements were taken out by another anon in a previous thread.

https://mega.nz/#!SlFARCwZ!YXMFS3RecgUN3VufSl2YM8WOAhb5b_Micnjgh3OgL7c

Please let me know if it works for you as well. I have all the extra settings in the in-game Smooth Doom menu set to Off.

Combined_Arms uses ammo yeah, there's some other weird quirks for weapons here and there though, the second set uses an heat management system along with ammo. And BFG tier weapons have infinite reloads at the cost of taking a long time and debuffing you.
Gonna add a CVAR the next update that makes it so you can pick up a more traditional BFG that just uses a normal ammo system for those who want it.
