>> No.5619840

Get an A/V hub / switcher with S-video input. Grab S-video cables for every console and run them that way. That's about the best picture quality you're going to get with those consoles feeding into a single TV set. You could also run the PS2 via component cables, but your mileage may vary on that since not all PS2 games will support that signal or colorspace.

And invest in some kind of shelf.

PS1/PS2 software doesn't have to support any colorspace other than RGB, the PS2 hardware handles everything to do with encoding the output signal. The only problem someone might have with component is on the TV side, if a really shitty TV doesn't recognize 240p or 480i properly on component but does on S-video or composite. It's a known problem for certain TVs.

>> No.5621056

>>5620635
Looked into it, the complaints I see about that game and most PS1 games are based on the 240p issue I mentioned. If you play those games on a PS2 connected to a non-HD TV using component, they work fine because the TV doesn't try to process the signal any further.

Too subjective. You should moreso think what YOU want to feel comfy. I'll give it a shot.

Go LCD. You can change the aspect ratio and zoom effects to customize the look for many games, you don't have to wait for tube(s) to "warm up", you don't have to degauss, worry about magnets/speakers which may or may not be in or along the unit if its TV, and you can use it for more modern systems. LCD may not have dials for the sake of fine tuning the picture but it generally display more advanced colours/lighting/shading which you will need if you get a unit like say a ps2. I have heard of some LCD TV can suffer refresh rate problems with older systems that use AV or component but I haven't encountered the problem myself but I have old LCD. I would recommend to check out the sharpness setting to make it look just right to your eyes defending how you TV implements it. My current LCD doesn't have edge enhancement until 91/100 for some reason so I set it to 90 as it just mattes or dulls the picture down beneath that - from my understanding Sharpness generally should be set to 0 but I still highly enough to tweak this setting so you don't get distracted by bad visuals or bleeding. My last TV's sharpness was set to 2 and sometimes 3. I know I blather here but this setting makes all the difference in my opinion.

If you want to go CRT, try to find one those rare flat-screen ones. So nice~ Same thing with sharpness applies to crt, too. Otherwise beware what you buy and always test it with an actual signal input before you buy

Get a good chair you can sit on few a few hours with good posture if not a recliner. Make that TV equal to slightly lower than head level so you can look down or straight and not crick your neck from up.

Everything else is to your tastes and preferences, anon. But for ps1 and n64, I'd go LCD if you don't want to go any older - but I play as far back as the 2600 on my LCD with no issues but your screen or tastes may not have the same sentiment.

If you're in the US and want to get nice quality without spending much, get S-video cables for both those systems and play them on a non-HD CRT TV with S-video inputs. Curved tubes generally have fewer geometry problems but flat tubes are newer with fewer hours on them.

Only if they're HDTVs because HDTVs scale low-res which adds lag; there are many non-HD flat CRT TVs without any of that lag.

Thanks you two. I honestly forgot about most of the problems with the CRT flatscreens. I didn't know HD was the main issue for those (thank you for teaching me that) but I remember seeing a lot of problems with many non-HD larger sized units, too. It's probably just because they were cheap quality. They're more rare in my area than other places though and it seems people mostly just bought ones made by the same cheap manufacturer whose name is long lost to me. I used to often see people pick these particular ones up off the curb and come back 30 minutes later to put it back. I know they weren't HD because I was in the stores a lot trying to find a good small TV when everyone seemed to just want big & bigger. Hell I knew a guy at the time with a CRT HDTV that was wide as a sedan is long but I digress.

So anyway, I find Anon 1's opinion on the input lag very relatable because how my regional economy purchased their TV's. Anon 2 helped me understand why I thought they were categorically good for gaming yesterday.

I asked my friend who owns an appliance store about why nobody was buying then-new CRT flatscreens where we live and he said that nobody in our region was buying TV's or monitors and mostly people just window shopped because they were interested in plasma hype but didn't know how much that costs as-of-then. The result came usually 1-2 TV a week to some person who just wanted to replace their broken TV and thus usually got a cheap one. Monitors on the other hand were all high-end expensive CRT because the only people buying monitors wanted those and those kinds were a rare purchase already.

I go into all of this detail because I've been trying to get a chance to reply to you for hours and its been stewing in my brain and I don't want to have yet another thing go to waste today. It's just been one of those days so please accept my wall of text. Have a nice day, gotta go.
