What is the hardest NES game?

It's got to be Silver Surfer or Battletoads. I can't imagine a game being much harder.

Oh for fuck's sake, these games are only hard because of amount of shit you have to memorize. Memorizing isn't a challenge, it's more like a school exam. It's artificial difficulty.

Look at this piece of shit for example. It's literally the cheapest attempt to make the game longer and artificially difficult and you can't deny that

I'll second this one. Managed to beat it once when I was a kid and couldn't even manage to do it ever again. Way too difficult.

Battletoads. If you used savestates to beat it then you didn't actually beat it, fact.

The clinger-winger on stage 11 is even worse IMO. No checkpoints, one mistake = death. I can't even imagine trying to beat it on 2-player. After I finally got past that shitty stage, I beat the last with relativity no trouble.

Hoshi wo Miru Hito / Stargazer is the hardest NES game. It's an absolutely legendary garbage pile.

You can't. The game is bugged so the second player's bike just won't move and the second player will get hit by the ball and die immediately.

Famicom version of Ghosts'n Goblins is harder. There are no continues in this version (3 lifes for whole fucking game ), there are much more enemies and some of them are more aggressive and unpredictable. Yes, it's basically unplayable, and impossible to complete for normal player.

Hard because they were made by Micronics:
Ikari Warriors, Ghosts n' Goblins, Super Pitfall

Hard because the designers were assholes:
Battletoads, Silver Surfer, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania 3, Dragon's Lair, Adventure Island, Double Dragon 3

Ikari Warriors is the #1 hardest imo, especially without ABBA

You kinda have to make multiple categories for hard NES games. You've got hard because they're incredibly poorly designed, hard because they expect you to memorise a bunch of shit and go through it trial and error to pad out the game, and the type where it's fair but incredibly tough and unforgiving. It's way easier to list the former.

That version, absolutely! Nigh impossible BS hard game.

It wasn't originally that way, though. One more classic case of ports getting fucked over. The original Japanese version, Mad City, is WAY more reasonable in its difficulty and is actually fun to play. You take half as much damage from enemies as in Bayou Billy, start with more ammo on the shooting levels, you get a life bar instead of one-hit kills on the driving stages, etc.

>> No.5619674

>>5613830
Agreed. There are many examples of NES games that are hard just because they’re poorly made or unfinished. Personally I think we should only count competently made difficult games.
