Not as successful as the PC-Engine Super CD Rom, but it was moderately successful. I just hate seeing people associate it with the 32X and assume that all MD add-ons were failures.

Make no mistake: the 32X was a colossally bad idea. It wasn't even that impressive technology wise side, and it ended up competing against the Sega Saturn.

It has a smaller library of games than the MD, SFC, or even PCE-CD, but it has a lot of good games. Even if some of them are just NA ports of PCE-CD games.

Noteworthy CD games:

>Snatcher
>Sonic CD
>Shining Force CD
>Popful Mail
>Lunar: Silver Story
>Lunar 2
> Keio Flying Squadron
>Robo Aleste
>Lords of Thunder
> Android Assault
>Earthworm Jim SE
>Ecco the Dolphin

I think ultimately Sega would have collapsed because everything else aside, they were an arcade-focused company moving into a different era of games. But had they just not launched the 32X, had better architecture for the Saturn and not elected Bernie Stolar, the Saturn could have been a moderate success worldwide and Sega would have had enough money to run the Dreamcast until probably 2003 or 04.

Yeah it's the other reason I don't think they would have succeeded. Even now the only reason SoA and SoJ don't fight is because all the power of SoJ has been stripped away. They don't have any dev teams or real marketing muscle anymore.

basically there's just a portion of the Genesis shell on the side that comes off to expose a connector, then you slide it on top of the CD and it plugs into that bit on the right side

>FMV shovelware

FMV games are bad, but they're not shovelware. "Shovelware" refers to just cheaply made trash games that flood markets of popular consoles. FMV games in contrast were actually high budget affairs often employing real actors.

First, it's still significantly weaker than the Saturn and PlayStation, making the whole thing pointless. Second, tech demos are meaningless. They're pure hypotheticals running graphics at 100% but nothing else. Like, I see empty rooms. What about music, enemies, and orhter effects?

Remember, 32x was released:
>NA: November 21, 1994

Saturn:
>JP: November 22, 1994

It came out literally a DAY before the Saturn. Saturn is much more of a next gen system than the 32X. 32X is like some half-measure. You either go with either the 32X or the Saturn, not both.

The thing that happens is that the fanboys will over-sell weaker consoles to try to make them on par with other ones. Look at any Saturn "Recommended" list and it's filled with filler and ports and games you'd never see being recommended for PS. That's because of their insecurity.

If you start from admitting the Sega-CD has a weaker library, but still has plenty of great games, it's a much better position.

The Mega Drive had a much stronger library than the PCE, but the PCE-CD had a stronger library than the SegaCD. Funny how that works out?

Firstly you're wrong about Saturn has so many incredible lesser known games that would be mainstays on every "greatest games of all time" list had the system been popular. I find a lot of genesis and snes games to be very overrated because of the popularity of those two systems (especially games like Star Fox, Terranigma, etc. - that are always held in such high esteem, and you would probably call "filler" if they were on a Sega CD list) in addition to all the great games they admittedly do have. As far as PC-Engine vs Sega CD, it seems about equal, they both catered to many of the same niches and had a very similar feel from the palettes used to the soundtracks of many games on both systems. You'd be hard pressed to call any of the games mentioned above as filler, games like Dark Wizard give you hours and hours of strategic gameplay whereas games like Ecco CD are uniquely enjoyable enough to say you can't get that experience anywhere else.
