The system is 18 years old now, and has been followed by the DS->3DS->Switch, in that order.

It's more than old enough, and certainly feels retro these days. It should be allowed on the board.

yes i wanna talk about terrible snes ports, more rpg trash and shovelware shit like shrek kart.

to be QUITE honest, pic related is one of the best games ever.
But, GBA wasn't released before the year 2000, so fuck off OP. Mail hiro about /v2k/ like everyone else.

Like SNES and PSX didn't have shovelware?

At any rate, it was the last console to use actual cartridges, and got a port for the original DOOM. It's retro enough for /vr/.

2000 is a completely arbitrary cut-off. Dreamcast is 6th gen, and so is GBA.

Would you've been against Dreamcast before it was added, simply because it didn't meet the cut-off for being retro?

>> No.5605831

hey it's another "6th gen babbies cry about their childhoods not being retro" thread with nothing but "CURRENT YEAR" as an argument

fuck off already

>> No.5605834

>>5605831
Dreamcast is 6th gen too, and is allowed on the board. Please tell me how the last system to use actual cartridges isn't retro.

>> No.5605841

>>5605834
Okay ban the dreamcast, nobody gives a shit about it and it's only used as an argument to include the rest of the 6th gen cancer

>> No.5605843

Every time we allow new vidya generations, the identity of the board becomes a little more vague. I think it's important to keep /vr/ as a particular slice of video game history (the beginning). In the context of this board "retro" is a time period, not a genre or feel. And dirty little secret: I've seen lots of people break the rules and discuss new games anyway. If you want to talk about games, do it already!

>> No.5605845

>>5605843
No, is not possible. You can talk about games made this year for the snes but not GBA games for fuck's shake. Let alone half the pc games discussed on vr are not really retro. But you mention a single GBA games and boom, thread deleted.

I think mods simply just play computer games. It is like they are the community, they make the rules. You come here to please them.

>> No.5605846

>>5605843
It's not a new vidya generation, Dreamcast is 6th gen and already allowed. If you want to be like >>5605841 and say Dreamcast should be banned again, sure, but the argument your using doesn't make sense.

>2000 is a completely arbitrary cut-off
Nobody ever claimed otherwise. Rules ARE arbitrary, especially on private websites.
Nobody really forces anyone to post on /vr/, there's plenty other places to discuss modern games.

>> No.5605851

>>5605847
GBA isn't modern though. It's very much retro.

>> No.5605860

>>5605851
2000 rule.
If we break it, then we'll get flooded by thristy 6th gen fags wanting to make Halo, Melee and Kingdom Hearts generals.
That's not even having into account the gen 7 fags that are in their early 20s now and having nostalgia for shit like modern warfair 2.
No thanks, I'll endure not being able to discuss GBA on /vr/.

>> No.5605865

>>5605860
So it's not that you disagree that GBA probably fits the "retro" label, it's just you don't want to give other 6th gen console whiners another leg to stand on.

ps1 and snes had more games and most of them were of better quality (there was even good licensed games) in comparison to GBA.

Eh, more or less.
I actually don't really care much about the word "retro" on a semantic level. There isn't really an official definition for it anyway, just vague subjective definitions. It can mean something "old" or something that looks "old", but for a 18 year old, something from 2012 is old.
Anyway, yeah I'd rather not discuss GBA here, I won't die because it's not allowed.

>> No.5605901

Initial reaction is all for it, then I realized the GC connectivity is a slippery slope.

>> No.5605921

Of course you can't discuss GBA or any other video games on /v/, so it would be nice to make a few exceptions here. But these "X should be allowed" threads always turn into a shitposting nexus.

You can still post about retro remakes or ports on GBA, though. As long as the original version is a retro game.

>> No.5605938

>>5605865
Not him, but there's nothing particularly retro about GBA exclusives, other than being released for an underpowerd system. They pretty much followed all of 6th gen design philosopies to the core.

Metroid Fusion is closer to modern indieshit than to Metroid 1 or Super Metroid.

I literally got it for my birthday and had to wait until Christmas so I could get a SP and actually see the goddamn screen.

I played like three times with the original GBA and left it in a drawer to rot. I've never been so disappointed with a present.

>I think it's important to keep /vr/ as a particular slice of video game history (the beginning).

You realize that vidya started in the '70s, right? PS1 and N64 are incredibly far removed from "the beginning," even NES can't be classified as part of "the beginning" as it actually saved the gaming industry after it had already died in the American market.
