What's your favorite version of the original Phantasy Star, and why?

I'm debating right now between the original release, the SMS Power re-translation, the PS2 generations remake, or the new Switch release.

The Sega Ages port by a fucking mile, just because of the added mini-map. It also has the option for FM sound as well.

That does seem appealing. As much as I have nostalgia for drawing maps on graph paper, it would probably speed things up quite a bit.

It really does help out. The port also has a monster guide and shows you the stats of equipment, spells, weapons, and items, so you don't have to look them up.

The fan retranslation. The US version have some bullshit changes in shop prices or other stuff like that. I also prefer the regular sound instead of FM, but it's your choice.

That's the one you want, make no mistake. The Switch version may have the FM sound but it's stuck with the truly woeful 80's translation. We don't need to make do with that anymore. And the less said about the PS2 remake the better. Don't even consider it.

PSI and PSII are the only games in the series I really cared for. I guess the original PSO also holds a place in my heart.

The SMSPower translation of PSI is surprisingly good. And there's a bugfix patch for PSII that also reverts some of Sega's bizarre translation errors and censorship: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2132/ Someone else produced an earlier retranslation of PSII from scratch, but that turned out to be riddled with even more issues than Sega's official localization.

Sorry m8, but choosing a known butchery of a translation over a far more accurate and faithful one is pure contrarianism so I can't take anything you say seriously. Good thing this site is anonymous or your 'opinions' would be forever known to be shite by all.

The SMS Power version has FM sound too. You just press start at the title screen to change it.

That dude hacks are a must for 2, 3 and 4 since they fixes lots of bugs and doesn't alter the base game in any other way.

Yeah, I know m8. I didn't mean to imply that the Switch one was the only one with FM sound, I just meant to point out what it was missing, which is a decent translation.

They retranslated it so that it didn't sound like broken English but they kept the localized names for everything. They half-assed it basically.

How you doing fellas. (Cracks open a beer, lights a cigarette). I never played the original games in the series, just the Online stuff, can y'all level with me... Are the games actually good and worth playing? Like the original, is it worth a playthrough if you aren't a fanboy? Please keep in mind, I'm not a pussy, I don't give a shit if it is hard as fuk or a grindfest or slow as fuk or whatever, as long as it is worth playing in the end. What do you all think? Also I play the games in Japanese, so don't need to worry about translations and other abominations to God like that.

If you like exploration and adventure then the first game is absolutley worth playing. 2 and 3 are a bit more iffy. Both quite incomplete feeling, but there was certainly potential there. I wouldn't recommend those two to non-phans but maybe the first game will make you one, who knows. 4 is easy peasy lemon squeezy but it's quite a ride, very well presented and generally fun. As long as you don't require all your games to be tuff stuff, you're likely to enjoy it. PS Gaiden is pretty lame and the text adventures aren't terribly exciting. Think that covers it.
tl;dr 4 is very good and since you're not a soft cunt, 1 is also very good.

Okay, I'm replaying Mother 2 at the moment, just got to Fourside and OP as fuk even though I didn't grind. Going to finish this up then play Phantasy Star 1.

Anyone know if it's possible to replace the Japanese ROM on the new Sega Ages release on the Switch?

I tried starting the game again and stopped as soon as I saw COLA and BURGER in the item shop.
