Is there a traditional jrpg that doesn't have the same damn song for EVERY random encounter? How do people stomach this madness? Hardly any of them even feel like they were composed around the fact that you'd primarily be hearing the first 20 seconds repeatedly for the next 50 hours.

>> No.5597883

Give examples OP.
Earthbound has a healthy amount of variety in regards to battle music.

>> No.5597887

Agreed, it's terrible, and most JRPGs would be better if they just played the field/dungeon music during battle. There was an FF6 hack I played that did this and it was glorious. Hearing the spooky forest theme while fighting ghosts was awesome and way better than that annoying fucking fight song

>Is there a traditional jrpg that doesn't have the same damn song for EVERY random encounter?

Yes, actually.

Live-A-Live has eight scenarios, and each scenario has its own unique battle theme.
Breath of Fire II switches battle themes midway through the game.
Pokemon Gen II has different battle themes for day and night
Tactics RPGs have map themes, not battle themes

>> No.5597906

all of the mother games have different battle themes depending upon the enemy that you fight
dragon quest 4 and phantasy star 3 change their battle theme as you progress
may not be retro, but SMT3 does this as well iirc

This sounds fucking outstanding.

>> No.5597960

Legend of Dragoon had at least 3 different battle themes which change depending on what kind of environment you're in. There's multiple versions of boss fights too.
ARPGs tend to only have boss music, and just play the overworld music for the rest of the regular fights.

>> No.5597983

Pokemon not only has night/day themes for its fights but it has separate themes for battles against random NPCs as well as at least 3 distinct boss themes in the retro games.

I almost never listen to the music in games. If I can adjust the levels I'll leave sound effects in but otherwise just turn the volume down and listen to something else. Most game music is awful in my opinion.

Earthbound/Mother series has like eight different ordinary battle themes.

The battle theme is one of the best parts of a JRPG, you fucking zoomer.

Having a total of 3 themes in the whole game (regular battle, boss battle, final battle) is more than enough, it only sucks when you have less than that, like Chrono Cross that has no boss theme and the regular theme is super shitty to begin with.

>> No.5598292

one regular battle theme is fine as long as it kicks ass
an actual bummer is when the dungeon/world music resets after each battle and you only get about halfway through it before another battle starts

>> No.5598440

Skies of Arcadia has 2, also it’s the only game I know that has dynamic final boss music.

Grandia 1 switches halfway through, although unfortunately it gets slightly worse. The sequel has different boss music depending on whether you’re fighting a generic boss or something possessed by a piece of Valmar, but to my memory only one random battle theme.

NO YOU SEXTUPLE NIGGER

There needs to be a FOURTH theme for stronger than normal bosses (like fighting Masamune and the Tyrano in Chrono Trigger), and MAYBE A FIFTH theme for special bosses (like Magus)

If you don't have this, you end up with the ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT that was FFIX putting you through four boss fights in a row at the end of Disc 3 that all had the normal boss theme, which, let me repeat myself, is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT.

>> No.5598894

Regular Battle shouldn't even be its own theme. The game should keep playing the normal level music without interruption - otherwise the battle music intro will be the most god damn annoying jingle ever, a few hours into the game.

And there should be at least 2 or 3 final battle themes. One for the lieutenant / 2nd in command who you fight repeatedly (it's fine if there are more than one of these guys as long as they are memorable), one for the final boss fight, and one for when the final boss gets serious and it's GO TIME.

>> No.5599198

I rather want to hear this every time I fight

agree completely that this is a really good idea and the repetitive music interruption is about 40% of why random encounters are annoying in RPGs.

becuase not only do you hear the first 20 seconds repeated of the battle music over and over, the map theme keeps getting cut short too.

>> No.5599261

>Main battle theme changes in the second half of the game

Almost an acceptable compromise, and is a cool relief when it happens

Are there any JRPGs that do this? It's such a great idea and yet quite an obvious one, surely there are some that do it.

I just like decent music and almost no games, especially retro ones have it.

Etrian Odyssey isn't retro but it's pretty traditional. In main game there are 2 common battle themes, a miniboss theme, a regular boss theme, usually several optional boss themes, and a final boss theme. The bonus dungeon has its own regular and boss themes.

that boss rush was way too easy to warrant a special theme for each

>> No.5600629

I guess that there would at least some games that do this, but I find it very strange that the developers wouldn't put a dedicated battle theme in the game and just use the overworld/dungeon theme.
