The DC version was canceled at the last minute, but the build was leaked online. It's not perfect, the loading times can be crazy.

The new content was later ported to the PC as Blue Shift + HD models pack, but the DC version still has a number of interesting differences, e.g. some models being different etc.

Retro will always mean "hardware and games released in the 1900s", not "games that are older than X number of years". Deal with it.

It is "official" in the sense that it was actually developed by Gearbox and licensed by Sierra Online. But the game was canned and never saw an actual release. All that we have access to is an unreleased prototype.

This and the Vendetta sequel are both awesome.

I'd also recommend 'The Trap'. It's a very unigue mod. Doesn't look like much on screenshots, but it's very challenging. It's motre like a puzzle game and has very clever puzzle designs.

Overrated mediocrity that is worse than most old-school FPS.

The whole game feels like "piecemeal situations: the game". The monsters don't compliment each other, so you end up with 'the marine part' 'the female assassin part' 'the alien grunt part' instead of situations where you fight mixed groups of enemies that support each other.

Half-Life's level design is also worse than other FPS. It takes place in Black Mesa, this massive facility, but since it's completely linear, it doesn't take any advantage of that like Hexen, Strife and System Shock did with their hub worlds. At the same time, Half-Life also lacks the variety other FPS had with their unique self-contained levels, nor does it have something like Unreal's epic journey across an alien planet. It's the worst of both worlds.

Linear != bad design. The game has lots of variety in regards to gameplay and atmosphere. Every level introduces a new mechanic or scenario for you to play with.
