You can extract the .deb files (with your preferred archive tool) for different versions and place them into another folder (e.g. /opt/).
Only problem with this method is your dotfiles might get overwritten/cause problems with some versions, but I've been playing other games so I can't assure you this is true.

He also did some Quake 1 skins (fanart), Daikatana skins, gave Doom 3 THAT unique look (which is basically the only thing Kenneth Scott does so you just have to find more games he's worked on to get Doom 3 / Quake 3 aesthetics).

Maybe if it wasn't a skin and had its own player class so it could animate at all times it'd work but I don't care for it aesthetically.

It's a small sprite with limited animations, can't have all the details of the original 3D model with its shaders. Unless you wrote a shader for the sprites to add in noise I guess, but that's limiting its usage to modern GZDoom with hardware mode.

Guess it wouldn't be too hard to have a version of sprites where the visor is a unique color like blue so that it can be targeted by a shader using a boolean like if red + green == 0 then display the animated static stuff with the blue value overlaid on the static as gray. Then anyone who cares to enable it can have a 4x4 block of random values on Crash's visor.

Just make them fall straight down, even that would look better.

Also the falling down sprite combined with the low frame rate makes it look like they splash midair
I certainly thought that was the case when I first looked att the video.
If you can't remove it without also removing the splash on the ground, then just removing splash outright would be better IMO

Beat Shadow Warrior's Wanton Destruction addon. What a disappointment. The level designers seem to have missed everything that made Shadow Warrior fun. The levels are almost all cramped indoor areas full of hitscanners, making it play more like Duke Nukem. And some of the settings feel like they'd fit in better in DN3D too. Not to mention the EXTREMELY shitty/annoying sound replacements they added.

The first episode is free to play, if you want to play the other episodes or the sequels, you need to pay.

The idea with Freedoom is that it will run in any Doom engine or port, but it's made up completely out of freeware assets and levels, so it can be legally distributed with any port.
I see the reasoning, but I also don't think it's really a good enough idea that it's worth seriously considering.

Strife does alt-fire not with a secondary attack key, but by just making it a second weapon in the same slot, effectively being a fire mode.
Electric bolts and poison bolts are two weapons on one slot, even if there's only the one crossbow pickup, regular grenades and willy pete grenades are two weapons on one slot too (and there are some cut sprites for a third grenade, probably meant to be poison gas, which likely would have gone in that same slot).

There are mods which combine stuff like this though, Weapons Of Rebellion makes the grenade launcher an upgrade for your assault rifle, and makes the different bolts just a selectable fire mode (also letting you get an upgrade for the crossbow to make electric bolts less pitiful later in the game).
I think Brutal Strife did stuff along those lines too, but less complex and refined.

I wish more games did things like that, a bonus episode which is less serious and just plays up a theme like that. Duke Caribbean's gameplay is like 99% stock Duke 3D, and mostly it's a level pack with reskins, but it's so damn charming, and the levels are so good, it holds up excellently.

This. Action Doom 2 had a tiny commercial release back when it was new (basically just a physical disc with the game and a couple of bonuses on it), and that's the only ones besides Adventures Of Square which I think would have much merit to be able to be sold commercially.

Back To Saturn X could *maybe* be sold once it's complete, as you would use Doom 2 wad to run them, and otherwise they contain all original levels and assets.

Hedon's really not worth being bothered about it.

It has some decent environments but the mapping seems to be mostly to be looked at rather than being played, the weapon sprites are rather hit and miss and the player sprites, ignoring the style and the /d/ shit, there's something very wrong with how they shift about, so much so that you have to wonder why mirrors were put into the maps.

Feels like it had potential but fell off the wagon somewhere along in development.

Don't be afraid of using corners, pillars, and other features of the maps for cover (don't stay there for too long, however).

The game gives you a lot of dynamite, and you're meant to use it liberally, it can be bounced around corners to surprise and flush out enemies, and in general can just be thrown on the offensive because that shit sends them flying.

it's actually really easy to find if you were willing to ctrl+f on the first pro doom episode. I mimicked the edit myself, it works just fine. There's only one variable you need to change and a person in the youtube comments figured it out already.

From a guy named "TheDramaticSkull" on the prodoom episode 1:

"I think I figured out how he fixed the shotgun. First open the PK3 file with an editor like SLADE or just as a zip file. Go into the DECO folder and then the PLAYER folder. Open up Shotgun.txt in SLADE or a text file editor and change every instance of XTSG L 6 to XTSG L 4. I used Civvies intro at 0:23 to test how synced up they were and I think I got it."

There. Turns out I deleted my smooth doom folder so I lost the edit. Ended up just hitting ctrl+f on the video, and finding the fix a second time... It really wasn't hard.

I think you're being more cynical than him. Commercial little indie projects (and for that matter e-begging), are not a new thing.

Small fly-by-night studios would cram out commercial wads for Doom in the 90s, and they were nearly all terrible, while free projects were sometimes really good.
People remember Memento Mori 1+2 and Hell Revealed 1+2, which were free, nobody remembers Perdition's Gate or Hell 2 Pay, which were commercial.

The question is which *could* be sold commercially, and his answer, which I think is fairly correct, is that few could, either for legality, or for just not being substantial enough.
Stuff like Square is a complete new game, and could likely be sold.

I also don't think the idea that paid is always better than free mods is a universal notion.

Selling map packs was dubiously legal even at the time, and likely wouldn't fly today. But the difference between his iwad maps and his recent maps, is that his iwad maps set the standard and were highly influential among the community. Where as his recent maps are just simply good maps that follow that standard. There's nothing really all that new about his recent maps besides "more doom", and that's fine, but also means that if they didn't have Romero's name attached to them, they wouldn't have had nearly half the attention they've gotten.

No, let me explain. FreeDoom 2, ironically, came first, because at the time, there were way more wads and maps developed for Doom 2, so they were like "fuck it let's do this." Down the line, however, the FreeDoom 1 project, or "The Ultimate Freedoom" as it was called back then, was started. Even today, FreeDoom 1's project is pretty missing in original content in some places. Hell, Episode 4 is straight up a wad that was released some time before the project. Double Impact is a great episode though, so I think it's okay for them to use it.

So to answer your question directly without the history lesson, FreeDoom 2 will be more complete, and I think it's totally complete barring some placeholder sprites here or there. That said, as the singular diehard Freedoom fan on the planet, I would suggest playing the earlier versions (0.7 at the latest I think) because the maps there had a jankier, "Totally-Not-Doom-2" aspect to them that I found made them very charming, compared to the much more ambitious, if not pretty safe maps of today.

The new music is fucking sweet though. Whoever their composer is does an amazing fucking job, especially with the latest version's Map04.

Because profit motive corrupts passion motive and eventually leads to you making/doing things you don't enjoy to make money. Ask anyone who has made their passion into a job.

I completely agree. When I saw the fucking wilhelm scream inside the game I instantly knew their creativity was starting to dry up a bit. FreeDoom's older models, although ugly and janky as hell, had, /v/ be damned, soul, and while RayMooHawk is an undeniably good artist I feel like his new monster sprites, as well as the newer monster and gun sounds have taken away that soul.

It's so weird to explain but back when it was, essentially, a doom clone, the game felt more unique than it does now. Does that make sense, or am I just a nostalgiafag?

You can say 'it should be a passion project!' but passion doesn't pay your bills, or, if you need artists, musicians, whatever, it doesn't pay them.
I can understand being angry about people having the nerve to sell low-effort bullshit, but some mods have literally thousands of hours work and hundreds-to-thousands of dollars of the creator's money put into them. Hedon's creator paid something like $300 -per song- for Alexander Brandon's music, and he probably paid about the same for the for the menu screen art. There's nothing low-effort about that. The dude did an absolute mountain of work to get that game done.

I thought it was sort of a nice touch, knowing in the back of my mind that every orc slut including the MC in hedon had big tits and a giant cock. If you only ever saw it from moddb or whatever you'd have no idea the guy spends half his time drawing green girls with big horse cocks.

See, I started out feeling more or less same way about it in it's early days, but then he released the great forge map and that was about the point where my opinion went full 180. Hedon's switch/item hunting ceases to be aimless the second you start learning to pay attention to your surroundings, start reading every scrap of paper you encounter. It's not aimless at all - it just demands more from you than quick reflexes and snappy movement.

It's not a pure doom experience and isn't trying to be. It's really a lot closer to Unreal than anything else.

You too? I've wanted to do that for a while. In fact, a lot of the subtle environmental storytelling in the maps made me want to write a huge story for the game after compiling the best maps into an order that fits best (but still ensuring they're fun, and scale naturally with Doom's difficulty curve) while also adding stuff to explore, with no cutscenes, infodumps, massive intermission screens, and so on. Just little things, like dead bodies and datapads that don't do anything more than tell you why there's blood on the wall and leave the explanation as to what caused it and how to enemy and weapon placement, kinda like Unreal.

I dunno, I went through Map10 while listening to this while everything was dead, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7fsHtkNU7w and it was a really good experience. I'd love to recreate something like that, with dynamic music based on the fights you get into, how you end them, and how many secrets you find. I wanted to tell a story of a disgruntled engineer (who's just named The Engineer) going through the facility from the entrance, which was version 0.4's Map01, and going further and further into the AGM controlled city (since their logos and demonic brands are all over the towers in the city levels, I like to think AGM was more like Ultor Corporation than UAC) and research facilities when everything hits the fan. Zombiemen were mindless clone guards controlled by a master unit (the Icon of Sin replacement, kind of like FEAR and Paxton Fettel) that went haywire and slaughtered everyone, while the bigger monsters are all genetic experiments that also went rogue because of the IoS.

There's a lot of things I need to flesh out, but I honestly think if FreeDoom wants to be unique, instead of going the weird open source "Not-Doom" route, they should go the "Doom but with more cool shit" route. Like you said, a lot of FLOSS games go down that path and it hurts them quite a bit for it.

Another thing to mention is that the original sprite gives you all the info you need to fill in any gaps with your own imagination automatically, it's something you don't even have to think about. It's consistent all the way through out and details are clearly defined. Whereas the updated version adds literally nothing to the sprite besides weird depth and blur and misplaced detail that only brings your attention to how fake the entire thing is.

>>5593298
Look at the bottom and take note of all the obvious imperfections that stick out like sore thumbs upon closer inspection, while the original has none of these issues: There's a weird outline and shine around the block above the UAC stamp, it makes it look liek it was added in photoshop. The UAC stamp looks like an incomplete addition made in paint. The yellow and black striping directly above it is misshapen and uneven. The ridges directly behind the end of the barrel tip are irregular and their thickness is all over the place. The black and yellow striping around the edge of the barrel have the same problem, it looks like a total mess. The flange on the right side of the barrel at the end has wiggly lines and doesn't look natural at all. The ammo feeder on the side looks like it was poorly shopped in by someone lazy and underpaid.

The top of the weapon is overly crisp and defined in its shittiness while the rest of everything is blurry, like your depth perception is totally fucked up when looking at it. It's like 90% of the sprite is super far away and in your peripheral while the top portion is your focal point and 2 inches from your eyes. The top flange which might also be meant to be a sight isn't even aligned along the central axis of the gun. It's off center. It's like if you were having a fever dream of the weapon and then it was ran through an outsourced development studio. Precision and specifics are lost just to remove edges and jaggies. It's a fucking mess.

Protozoid slimers will on odd occasions actually munch a live monster whole, that's a feature.
Very rarely, this monster is an alien protector drone or even a mini battle lord, I've had it happen.

More often than not, they'll just eat a corpse, but it's hilarious as fuck when that stupid little blob outright destroys a really dangerous or big monster like that. It's one of those many charms which has me replay the game every now and then.
In terms of the game being held together with gum, mostly that's on the rendering side and kinda the physics, but I think the game is otherwise so genuinely good that it excuses the jankiness.

Slightly more complex than that, and you need a really hot light to set it off. He also mixed the thermite substance with like, vaseline or something, to make it an adhesive paste to stick to the window.

He presumably found excerpts from things like TM 31-210, or the Anarchist's Cookbook (which is a ripoff of the former but with a bunch of bullshit drug recipes tacked on).
He and his buddies at the time experimented a lot with making various explosives and what not.

If a slime EVER touches a enemy it will eat it. Every time. Except for the octobrains. Some levels are designed where they put hordes of enemies in line with them and your supposed to kinda just sit back and let them do their thing. Like the post office level

Yeah you basically have to go out of your way to make it happen rather than it happening itself.

Also, wouldn't a mod weapon be cool where Duke could capture these things from levels and throw them at enemies feet for them to get devoured?

just a question ..
i never modded anything in my life, besides Enviro Bear and a weird german game called "Waldmeister Sause" so i can shoot punks.
But im also a big fucking huge Warhammer 40k fan + i can paint a little bit and do shit in photoshop. Is it hard to make a Weapon Pack for Doom? I wish i could code ect. to make a whole episode but it will take ages and im 30 since a couple of weeks.

Working with DECORATE is piss easy. Best thing I can recommend to do is go to Realm667, just grab a few guns and open them up in SLADE3 and see how shit works.
Wildweasel made a pretty old but still mostly useful tutorial for babby's first gun mod too

Yes, but the amount of people that will choose a freeware "not doom" over having the actual thing is a very small minority, precisely because of how easy it is to obtain the real thing in this day and age.

do you mean how long has the word "doomguy" been in use? since at least 1994, so in other words as long as the game has been around https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/rec.games.computer.doom.editing/tf0gV-c-_80/UOYD64RamcwJ
