What was the first bitmap game with more resolution than Game Boy Advance?

1978's Space Invaders is taller than GBA is wide, and wider than GBA is tall, but it's monochrome with the color coming from physical overlays.

Culturally GBA games are vastly different from '80s games.

Why was the original GBA screen so fucking terrible?

I remember getting one for Christmas with Minish Cap and playing it THREE TIMES total. You couldn't see shit in that screen. I had to play with my GBC for almost another year so I could get a SP and finally bring myself to play Minish Cap.

>> No.5592645

>>5592303
Because the rule is "on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier". Since there's no hard rule for what "retro" means, they had to pick a hard date as a cutoff and chose 1999. Nothing more, nothing less.

Isn't GBA capable of fewer background layers than SNES?

As far as I'm concerned, any 2D sprite game is retro.

>> No.5592956

>>5592946
That idea doesn't work because then we'd have threads for Undertale, AVGN The Movie The Game, Celeste, and tonnes of other 2D indie and doujin garbage that gets shat out these days.

A set cutoff date is the best way to decide what is retro.

They were honoring Gunpei Yokoi by continuing his practice of designing portables with the shittiest displays.

Can you really tell when a GBA game was made just from the color saturation? Are post-SP games more muted?

>> No.5592973

>>5592645
That year was chosen just because someone had fee fees looking at a big round number. There should be more objective rationale behind it.

>> No.5592978

The cutoff date in the rules that never changes even as a dozen years go by and systems get more and more outdated is fucking idiotic.
There's also 6th gen console talk that is allowed but not the rest of the consoles from that same gen.
The stupidity is impressive.

You can make an argument for nearly any point after 1990. /vr/ has had long-ass debates over which version of DirctX was the turning point between modern and retro. Using the turn of the millennium as the cutoff simplified a matter that just doesn't have a clear-cut answer.

1999 was literally 20 years ago. That's not retro, that's ancient. That's like if somebody in 1999 thought that only games from the Atari era were "retro" but not NES games. Once again boomers showing their boomerness.

>> No.5593043

GBA will never be acceptable here. This is like arguing PS3 should be accepted because some late 90s PC games can run at a higher resolution than the PS3. Again, GBA will never be retro by this board's definition. You are wasting your time with these threads.

It isn't now, but it will be. All it takes is for people who were young when it came out to get older. Assuming the site lasts that long, this board isn't going to still be limited to 5th gen or earlier 20 years from now. The the definition has to expand eventually.

Me, but 30.

You actually can discuss GBA games here, as long as you don't post any images of the device or game boxes. The janitors were not of age when it was current, so they do not recognize any Game Boy Advance titles.

If you're going by genres and visuals, GBA fits with SNES much more than wobbly polygons do.

What a truly horrible analogy. How does that in any way relate to retro gaming?

>> No.5593061

If the kids who played a game when it first came out are now adults, that game is retro. Retro just refers to older games. If you were 10 when the GBA came out you are now 28 years old. Sorry for reminding you of your mortality, boomer, but it's the truth.

Retro refers to something new that imitates or is influenced by an older style, like shovelknight.

An actual old game like SMB is vintage.

This board should say it's for the discussion of vintage games for system released up 1999. The worst thing about this board is the board metadiscussion

Your definition is not good English. We have existing words for defining this shit.

>>5593059
Games dont age. They are still the same style and genre they ever were. Saying it's <current year> is stupid because a snes and MD style is nothing like a native gba game.
