How is this not recognized as the greatest game of all time?

>> No.5590901

>>5590892
Because it's really boring.

>> No.5590907

>>5590901
t. never played it past the first three levels

>> No.5590909

It's good but balloon fighter perfected the joust formula and added balloon trip mode

>> No.5590921

>>5590909
Balloon Fight imo has worse physics (they're actually based on the NES version of Joust allegedly developed by Iwata, fun fact)
Also it's easier and doesn't have the increasing point totals for egg combos like in Joust

>> No.5590937

>>5590921
Does anybody really give a shit about high score?

>> No.5590945

>>5590937
I mean that's literally the entire point of arcade games
And for the "increasing point totals" bit, I just meant it's more fun to string a combo of eggs and it gives you more incentive to stay alive

>>5590921
Yeah, it was developed by Iwata, who also did the NES joust as you said.
Admittedly I played Balloon Trip mor than the main game, so I might be biased because of that.

I do, pic related is my score in Balloon Trip.

My dad was a big fan of Joust back in the arcades. One time we went to a mall with a mini arcade, for some reason they had an old Joust machine and we had a great time playing it.
I like Balloon Fight a lot I feel like the floaty controls are what make balloon fight, without those controls the game would be so easy it wouldn't even be a game. I'd like to play Joust again, I can't even really remember how it felt to control.
Tell me /vr/o's, where can I actually play this. Last time I checked online all the sites that hosted it were pretty laggy and I don't know how to emulate something that's kinda like an arcade-only game.

>> No.5591000

>>5590985
There's a game on the SNES called "Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits" that has an, as far as I can tell, perfectly emulated version of the game
My only issue is there's no battery backup for high scores
If you know how to emulate PS1 games, there's a version for PS1 which does save high scores and includes Bubbles

>> No.5591084

>>5590892
It's my favorite. I shill it here all the time. The game play is fantastic and the are and concept is just great. It really shines when you try to beat your high scores. Someday I WILL break 1 million points, but it's gonna be a while.

>> No.5591092

>>5590985
Midway greatest hits on ps2 has a great port. You will be missing a little bit without the leaf switches in the arcade cabinet, but it's still damn good fun. That collection also has Joust 2.

What's the deal with the two versions of it? Sometimes I see a version of it that has yellow knights as the second-tier enemies, while in other machines they're grey.

>> No.5593531

There were many arcade games from that time which were on the same level if not better. But it's true, most people don't really appreciate them anymore.

But many still do! I love playing mame with a nice arcade stick and CRT monitor. Still one of my fav ways to play after all these years

>> No.5593537

I only know of the grey ones
There were revisions though, mainly to fix the pterodactyl farming bug
What version has the yellow knights?

>> No.5593697

I don't know. It's whatever version they have at my local barcade. I was trying to look up the version to see if the pterodactyl bug was fixed, but can't find anything about that version.

It's a great game but only younglings say things like "the greatest X of all time". Adults recognize that there are lots of great things that are great in different ways. They also often don't have a favorite color or number or even a bestest besest friend.

OH man, that's going to be hard, but the fact that it only has two enemy characters, it uses the same screen repeatedly, and never changes except for speed, you've stumped me. I admit defeat; Joust is thrilling and full of surprises.

>> No.5595147

>>5595026
Maybe because if you're playing 2 player you literally get rewarded for killing the other player on some stages? I don't know, but a casual arcade player might have a 2 minute long game, maybe they felt this was the right amount to not burn newbies too hard and keep them coming back with quarters.

The sequel was better, but no one ever wants to talk about it. Millipede and Dig Dug II were also leagues better than their respective progenitors.

True, but no one else near me wants to play Joust, also I don't own the machine. Even at the local arcade no one wants to play it and I'm sure it's there out of an obligation to a classic. It is much better head-to-head, though, I agree. Almost no one gives a fuck about Joust.

You're right, but that's what probably scares people off, it starts not terrible easy and then graduates to insane in one ramp up. It should have gotten harder five levels in, then I'd play it more. Joust is demoralizing.

IIRC, the developer thought space and plane shooters had been done to death, so he wanted to make a fantasy game about a knight who flies on a majestic eagle. Then it got changed to the ostrich things because the eagle looked derpy whenever it had to walk on land.

It's insane in a good way. It could have been some boring midieval game where you ride on horses but instead he went balls to the wall with his creation. I actually have only played the NES version and I'm wondering if the other versions are much different or better in any way? Is there a definitive version? The arcade version?

>> No.5598393

>>5598383
Joust on NES has different physics. IMO worse, but that's just because I'm used to the arcade. It's more similar to Balloon Fight's physics, since the Joust port was developed by Iwata as well.

Arcade version is the definitive I'd say, and there's perfect ports of it on SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, a lot of shit basically. Just avoid the fucking GBA version.

No one wants to play Joust with someone who sucks. If you try to play coop you'll just get in each others way and piss each other off. If the other guy doesn't suck you'll get in his way and piss him off and he'll punish you for it. Your local arcade has it because non-zoomers exist and do care about it. You just don't know any because stranger danger or whatever.
