I decided to try making maps for HeXen a few days ago. I am using GZDoom Builder 2 as I have been using that for a good year and a half now.

As for my map options I am using GZDoom: Hexen (UDMF) for my Game Configuration and Hexen ACS for my Script Type. I also downloaded Baker's Legacy Texture Pack.

Is there anything I missed or anything else I should do?

This is a follow-up post to my HeXen mapping post. I will probably post progress pics of my maps as time goes on.

I didn't really care for the puzzle aspect of Hexen (as a matter of fact I think it held the game back) so I am taking inspiration from other games when making my maps.

My main inspirations right now are Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and Delver. I also am thinking of giving each level a specific theme like a lava map or a glowing mushroom map with monsters, keys, traps and etc. to accompany those themes.

There was a contemporary expansion made by the same devs as Duke Nukem Nuclear Winter that's never seen the light of day. Hendricks (eduke32 dev) and some other people have it but they want to get it to a completed/polished state before releasing it. Some guy showed it to Devolver Digital (Redux publishers) to possibly publish but that was years ago and nothing's come of it.

ZDoom ACS is more flexible. Hexen ACS has a lot of limitations (for instance every variable must be global in scope).

I find the Baker's Legacy pack to be pretty crappy actually, it's mostly bad recolours and Heretic stuff. This pack has more useful/interesting edits & originals: http://ettingrinder.youfailit.net/hhex-resource.html

Ripping the first-person model animations from Hexen 2 to a 2D sprite format is a tedious motherfucker, and it's not as beloved as Quake or Half-Life to warrant the effort, at least from my viewpoint. Maybe somebody out there might be willing to do it.
Even getting past that, though, you also have the dilemma of which of those classes to actually represent. They picked the Cleric from Hexen 1 since he's a middle ground between the Fighter and the Mage, but Hexen 2's four classes are a bit muddier to pick from.

They're both great games that have both have their own merits. The ''switch hunting'' isn't as bad as its made out. Some of Hexen's issues were if a player missed the telegraphing, or didn't fully understand it, they were pretty fucked.

Such as with the whole seven portals thing, even though it uses the sounds of doors opening, tells you where something has changed and generally guides you somewhere in the area, if you don't make the connection or don't even pay attention to map names then you'll get lost a lot more, which seems to be the default experience.

Maybe they were going for a different audience to Doom and Heretic, or maybe they overestimated the playerbase they'd get.

Update #1

Things are going aight. 1st map is going to have a generic basic bitch dungeon theme to it but I already have plans on other map themes I want to go for. I am still considering make a glowing mushroom or cave level.

Anyways, I need a little help here with mapping. (pic related) I got some double doors here that swing open nicely and they work fine.

My question is, how can I make it so both doors will swing open no matter what door you press 'use' on? If someone could help me out or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

>> No.5583482

>>5583438
the second parameter of Polyobj_StartLine lets you make another polyobject mirror the movements of the one the line's defining
then put a line in front of the double doors (assuming you can only use it from one side) that swings the first door open; the second will follow with it

don't put it on the door, because then you can use both doors and end up with them embedded in the wall. if you can use it from both sides, then you'll need a script that looks something like this:

>#include "zcommon.acs"
>int DoorsOpened = false;
>script 1 (void)
>{
> if (!DoorsOpened)
> {
> Polyobj_RotateLeft(1, 16, 64);
> DoorsOpened = true;
> }

then you can just slap ACS_Execute(80, 0, 1) on the fronts and backs of the doors

Objectively false, I've been of the opinion that it isn't fun, and so have other people, here on /vr/, in this general and outside it, as well as elsewhere in the Doom community and beyond.

I think that Heretic wins over original Doom 1/2 in level design department.
Addition of Tome and other artifacts also spice things up quite a bit.

The monster roster is a bit worse than Doom 2, but that's because their development was concurrent, and Heretic worked off of Doom 1's roster.
As a plus, it has an actual boss battle.

Sound design for monsters aside from golems is inferior, but golems, Gauntlets and Dragon claw sound great IMO.

I haven't noticed the lack of texture variety until it was pointed out to me and i looked through the files - Raven did a good job designing their levels with such a limited set.

Overall I like Heretic much more than Doom, not to mention that there never been any game quite like it. There are very few fantasy FPS.

Fair enough, though lets also be fair; Doom's enemy variety is quite slim in KDITD, an episode widely praised for its level design.

The cyberdemon is pretty plain, yeah, particularly in how ID first used him.
I think of him more as a miniboss, or a heavy hitter for the mapper to place strategically, just putting him down in a wide open arena I think wastes him.

Like you need to use him as an obstacle, or heavy support for the other monsters.

Quake 2 being called Quake 2 was really just a case of "Aaah, bah, fuck it dude." *loud sigh*

Some other name was meant to be used, but supposedly there was some rights issue, so they just decided to call it Quake 2.
It's in no way a sequel to the original game, hell, ID probably didn't think they'd do another Quake ever again.

I guess Quake sort of just became some kind of anthology series or something.
You have the Slipgate thing, the Strogg thing, and then the Arena/Champions thing, which is about the only thing that ties the Strogg and Slipgate stuff together at all, and this is just barely, because Arena and Champions don't strike me as canon any more than Darth Vader being in one of the Soulcalibur games making that series canon to Star Wars.

Why Doomsday (JDoom) port is still updated? What is the point of it? GZDoom already had all its graphic enhancments a long time ago and right now it is graphically ahead of Doomsday because it has enhanced map format and PBR. Doomsday has smoother interpolation for 3D models. The same 3D models with standard Doom decorate have choppy movement and animations in GZDoom which makes them look worse than in Doomsday. Also if you load HD/3D pack for Doomsday you'll be able to play it on an old PC, but for the same pack for GZDoom you would need a high-end PC. GZDoom is very unoptimized for all these fancy effects. Also I heard that they plan adding PBR in Doomsday as well.

I find gunplay to be a bit boring for the most part. none of your guns feel like they have any real impact unless it's a killshot. and because the enemies lack painstates and none of them flinch, fighting in open spaces is a pain because you'll be taking damage from all sources, and you'll never be keeping the pressure on.

HECU are a bitch and a half to fight as a result. you can punch holes into troopers with the SMG and dump half a mag in one without any feedback. they kinda just tank all damage until they flop and that's it.

>> No.5584979

I love the cookoff function for the ZM66
Took a bad hit from a Baron while magdumping and accidentally dropped it in my rush to run away.

The fucking thing cooked off and kept firing on the ground and gunned down a pair of zombiemen. It was amazing to sort of see.

No, ZDoom had long ago introduced 4 new dedicated keybinds for special weapon functions, like Zoom and Reload but completely user defined instead.
Many people still stick additional functions to Reload and Zoom though for some reason.

They work just like "Fire", "Altfire", "Zoom" and "Reload" states, but defined as "User1", "User2" etc.
IIRC you can rename how the binds are called in the menudef if you are gonna to use same weapon functionality on the same keybind.

Putting it on actual sale platform (and making a better trailer) would put it well above the usual "retro fps" trite that is prominent on there.
Might as well try to get it into the Epic Store exclusives and get that sweet epic bucks right away.

What might be fun. Is to replace episode 4 with a sorta expansion pack. Like... After the story you get pulled into... I dunno... An alien space ship, that is pulling creatures from other dimensions for study. And you gotta fight to escape.
That's a thought. Might not do it. Probably even. But something like that? Just spitballing. That way theres perhaps a reason for people who already played it.

What's weird about HL or Halo being blamed for ruining FPS because of the elements other games took is when there were other problems with the COD type games that may not have been present in HL or Halo.
COD was simplistic as fuck in gameplay because it had no actual setting or vision besides "realism" and you can't do much with that.
But even then, it didn't try to be a "military sim" type of game, just the most basic a FPS can be.
Because HL even had something like the Barnacle, which is an example of an interesting enemy.

I had shitloads of fun while playing Plutonia. It never felt too hard, but nicely challenging. I've played some really bad wads, where the difficulty comes from unfair situations and spamming enemies without thought, but Plutonia never felt like that. Plutonia's encounters were perfectly planned and thus created clever and challenging situations.

Here's my message to ones who complaing about Plutonia being too hard. If Plutonia feels too hard, just tune it down to HMP. It's just stupid as fuck to force yourself to UV and then complain about it being too hard. UV is the hard difficulty, and not option that you are forced to choose, because you have plenty of ego, but lack the skill. It's supposed to be the pain in the ass. Doom The Way Id Did : Lost Episodes
It's kind of in the same way, except these are (mostly) the maps which were rejected for looking a bit too advanced, or being a bit too conceptually advanced for the kind of stuff Id was doing back in 1993.
Even includes a bonus episode consisting of maps which contended for the E1M8/E2M8/E3M8/E4M8 spots, sort of like a boss rush episode almost.

I thought it was overall quite fun, had some neat ideas and setpieces, which though was what disqualified them from the original DTWID, are quite neat on their own merits.
Also check out DTWID2, I think it's actually even better than the first one.

>COD was simplistic as fuck in gameplay because it had no actual setting or vision besides "realism" and you can't do much with that.
You can do a shitload with that, just look at SWAT4.
The 00s/10s plague of completely bland modern military shooters weren't bad because they had a pretense of realism, in fact, few of them made a good effort towards realism at all, short of graphics advancements.
Look at Hideous Destructor, a mod for Doom manages to be far more realistic than COD and its clones, and that's WITH supetnatural hell monsters.

The real issue is that they're shallow, there's little depth in gameplay, and level design is monotonous, linear in all the boringest of ways. There's shitloads of different guns, but A), in a practical sense they're all way too similar (Counter-Strike, The Specialists, and Day Of Defeat all do this better), and B), none of them are treated with proper realism, so you don't actually get the possible depth that a well thought out milsim or other properly thought out realistic shooter could have.

Art is hard. People that can do art are valuable.
It's really a huge testament to how far gameplay mods have come, too. Not even a decade ago, gameplay mods that had custom graphics were a rarity, people were happy to just rip stuff from more and more obscure FPSes with only minor editing.
Now, customized graphics are the norm, you have to give your mod visual flair and punch. People are putting more and more emphasis on visual presentation and making sure things look and animate nice.

The biggest issue is that a lot of that gravitated towards having "shooting gallery" type encounters where you generally want to stay in a mostly static position and just pick off enemies that will conveniently run out into the open and make themselves convenient targets for you.

Also usually only one attack vector to worry about.

You rarely have to take initiative, and alternate approaches are rarely an option.

They lack any sort of dynamic elements to make them interesting, outside of whatever scripted set pieces are going on.

If you look at Half-Life and Halo, they largely avoid this sort of thing. Constant movement is encouraged and in the case of Halo at least, AI is robust enough where fighting them doesn't feel like picking off convenient targets.

What the fuck am i doing wrong? Can someone spoonfeed a retard? I just want to play the quake mission packs even though I found the base game pretty lackluster.
They boot up fine in glpro but I can't seem to boot into them in quakespasm, either with the command line or the console. The former just gives me this error and I'm not sure how to fix it.

The hipnotic and rogue directories have to be in the same path as the id1 folder.

Probably because you have the actual mod folder inside of another folder. Take the hipnotic folder from inside the Armagon folder and cut-paste it to where the game executable is.

use GetCheckSum()
gives you any given maps pre-generated seed
then just compare that to a list and do things from there
i mean
this is assuming that you are doing this by hand, and not 'proc-gen' spawning things around randomly

Thanks lads, I got it working now. I just pasted my config.cfg from ID1 over into the other directories. Anything I should add to make it work with the new weapons?

>> No.5588032

>>5588025
Yes, delete your config.cfg and let the game do its thing, it'll automatically set the new weapons to slots 8/9/0.

>this is assuming that you are doing this by hand, and not 'proc-gen' spawning things around randomly
i am actually , but its mostly non-random with decoration types having differing spawning methods (floodlights spawn around double-sided linedefs in outdoor sectors with low ceilings, for example)

I want to make a big folder with all the retro FPS games that can be played anywhere, any time, (almost)any computer so I can stick it in a flash drive and never be bored ever again. I got all of the Doom Engine games, both Quakes, and even classic Sam, only left with Build Engine games. Does eDuke run Shadow Warrior and Blood as well like (G)ZDoom does or will I have to hunt down specific sourceports for both of them? In that case how would one best those games nowadays?

I have a special connection to Half-Life, I can't play it without taking my time and generally taking in the atmosphere. With shooters made more for running and gunning its fine to play on the go for me, I've replayed them so fucking much by now I could probably play them blind and deaf so the inability of being able to take in their atmosphere isn't much of a hindrance to my enjoyment of them. I'm aiming to make a giant /vr/ folder full of good old stuff I can put in a USB and play on whatever computer I stick it in.

So, can this actually work on any map just by analysing its textures/sectors, or does it work only on levels that you defined?

>Since when a shitposter who compiled together a bunch of mods made by other people is a modder?
You'd be surprised how much the meaning of "modder" has been twisted out there. Modder can also mean "someone who installs/uses mods", or "someone who uses cheat engine".
