It's not the hardware, it's the shitty quality of their repros. They already edited it out of the webpage, but some (all?) of their SNES repros used to have this warning in the item description :

Intestinal Distress is the worst level in EWJ, especially the Genesis version. It was greatly improved in the Special Edition though. It alone isn't what makes the Genesis version better. The fact that the SNES version is at the wrong aspect ratio and has slowdown and sprite flicker is what makes the Genesis superior.

I'd get it if it were
A. On Genesis where it belongs
B. Black plastic and not some bright stand-out color.

Some modern parts use 3.3V components instead of the original 5V, but no level switching. The console still uses 5V so the protection diodes in the 3.3V parts are constantly drawing current and possibly exceeding the absolute maximum ratings. Doug and Nick talk about the development of the games, and most notable is the part where Sega demanded they have an exclusive level over the SNES version, which is how Intestinal Distress came to be. The SNES version cannot possibly be a "port" with this in mind.

Have you guys forgotten that the Genesis version is the original version? The Genesis version released in early June of 1994, the SNES port came out in late October of 1994. That's almost half a year later, why would Sega care about that version, let alone if they even knew the port was in development.

The story about the level has changed over the years too. Originally it was stated that they were able to fit more on the cartridge due to the Genesis lending itself to compression better and having more ROM space in general. That makes perfect sense as the Genesis doesn't have to waste ROM space for all the insturment samples for it's music like the SNES does. There's quite a few Genesis to SNES ports from around this time that all suffer from that problem.

The more recent story about Sega demanding it doesn't seemt align with what the developers said back in the 90's when interviewed about the SNES port. I wouldn't be surprised if the story about Sega demanding an extra level was an honest mix up with the Sega CD version.

Look, SNES vs. Genesis sound is a perception formed though what we grew up with. It doesn't matter what the game, it always boils down to the same thing: Genesis kids feeling the SNES sounds muffled, and SNES kids such as myself think the Genesis version sounds like robot farts.
