Good. This is an underrated game, the updates to 1-3 aren't flawless but are better than people give them credit for and Wily Tower is just excellent fanservice.

All the other choices are great stuff, too. This thing's gonna be about as good as I could've hoped for. So many of the games I wanted like Beyond Oasis and Ghouls n' Ghosts are here, plus totally unrealistic wishes like Wily Wars. I couldn't be happier, really.

Really disappointing. The previous selections seemed satisfyingly ruthless - a mix of essentials, best-in-series titles and hidden gems.

But Vectorman and Spinball really don’t hold up well, and Alex Kidd is absolute garbage - they all feel like they've gotten a space out of sentimentality more than anything, which we’d managed to avoid up till this point.

As for Golden Axe, fine, but 2 would've been far more fun.

As a Megaman fan, the Wily Wars isn't the best game, but it could be a savvy choice - maybe an attractive curio for other fans who never owned the system.

But SF2 is strange - beyond the controller puzzle, it's not as synonymous with the system as it is with the SNES, and in both cases it's grindingly slow and tedious to play compared to what we’re used to now.

Ghouls n Ghosts is good, but not essential. I hope this is Sega keeping Capcom sweet for the Dreamcast mini.

Shame, it's taken the shine off the Wonderboy and PSIV reveal - genuinely beautiful games. And Thor’s supposed to be pretty darn good. But they're a bit lost in an otherwise crummy selection

Can someone explain what the point of this thing is? Why would you want a smaller version of a Sega Genesis that still needs to be plugged into a TV and still has normal sized controllers? I don't understand how the smaller size of the system itself helps with anything.
It'd make a little more sense as a handheld thing with its own screen, but even then that wouldn't really be necessary since you can already just play Genesis games on smart phones now and not be limited to emulating just that one system. Depends on your perspective. I'd agree that, if you spend a lot of time playing retro games, it's more cost & time effective to emulate. If you only have a passing nostalgia for them, it's the opposite.

That said, a friend of mine who "doesn't play video games" visited a few weeks ago, and saw my Snes mini under the tv. She asked if it had Mario Kart - we spent the rest of the afternoon playing that.

Point being, the minis are a great way of encouraging others to enjoy the hobby with you. If I'd brought out my emulator and, apropos to nothing, asked her if she wanted to play Snes games, she probably would've looked at me funny.

And they make good sense from a commercial POV, given that, if they're done right, they make a lot of money.

Things like a portable Mega Drive or Snes have no sense because those were systems created to be played in TVs much bigger than what a portable little screen can show. When they ported home system or arcade games to portable consoles, they had to make adjustments to the graphics in order to fit the game in those small screens, like what they did to the Snes ports for the GBA or the Sonic The Hedgehog port.

I mean, you can really play those games (or Neo Geo ones) on a portable phone. It may be serviceable, but it's really a bad idea unless you don't have other way to do it.

You're confusing "have lower quality visuals" with "doesn't make sense." Being able to play Genesis and SNES games on your smart phone absolutely makes sense. You actually gain multiple new benefits you didn't have with the original systems, like not needing a dedicated system for each and not needing physical equipment beyond the phone that was already in your pocket all the time.
The mini systems don't make sense because they don't offer anything you didn't already have. They're smaller versions of regular systems in a way that doesn't even help because you still need to hook them up to a television set and they still require full sized controllers.
