ITT: Parts of games that prevent them from being great

>> No.5579495

Everything in 1. The Doc Robot stages in 3. Frankly I don't think people who claim to like 1-3 but shit on 4-6 know jack shit about game design. 2 is good though minus Boobeam.

1 is amazing. 2 is shit, and so are 4 and 5. 3 and 6 are pretty great. Git gud. Use save states to master Yellow Devil's timing if you have to, or beat the gimped version on Wily Wars

If I can beat this game in first grade, why can't you as an adult? This game is an all time classic, and always will be. To be quite honest, that part was not even that challenging.

Nobody besides the most hardcore of autists cares about what CRT you play, or what filters you use on your emulator to try and make it seem as "authentic" as possible. The most important part is how the game plays, not a handful of basic tricks for very specific games. Time is always moving forward, you can't stay in the past forever.

I've seen you post this exact same image in multiple threads when people state their childhood memories of beating a game that isn't as difficult as youngfags are making it out to be. You seem like an insecure faggot whose only solace to being shit at old games is desperately trying to mock those on the internet that aren't shit.

I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with this. Probably most players at this point have only two party members, certainly all level one, and likely have no combat experience besides maybe some tutorial explanations and a couple gibberlings. I can't imagine how many people gave up on this game here.

>> No.5580512

It's a part of the tutorial. There is a reason Imoen carries around the Wand of Magic Missiles that are insta-hit. The game assumes that you are familiar with AD&D rules or put two and two together and remember how to quickly break the wizard's concentration, so he botches the spell. He's defenseless once he wastes up his Fear spell.
IIRC you were told this at the tutorial in Candlekeep.

>>5580512
It is a guaranteed hit, but keep in mind that he starts the fight by casting Mirror Image, so your chance of hitting him drops very quickly.

AFAIK the game does not explain (in-game) that you can disrupt casters in this manner, and he is the first spellcaster you are likely to encounter (there aren't any in the Candlekeep battle tutorial, and I don't know that the monks that teach you how to resize your dialogue box and stuff give info on them).

Also realize that players are unlikely to save within Friendly Arm (especially if they are new to RPGs), and so if they die to have to replay everything up to that point within this area again.

>The game assumes that you are familiar with AD&D rules
That's the issue - I bet a lot of people were not, and the manual was probably pretty imposing to a lot of first-time players, especially if they felt comfortable after the tutorial.

I think this situation would be excusable if he wasn't as powerful as he is - like not having instant-death Magic Missiles, or not having access to Mirror Image. He should just be a level 2 mage that casts Magic Missile twice.

Beamdog is a guilty of a number of different crimes. Here are the major ones.

1. The Enhanced Editions are essentially a collection of free mods that had existed for nearly twenty years. Beamdog gathered them all up, slapped "Enhanced Edition" on it and resold it as a new product. There's very very little in the Enhanced Editions that wasn't already out there, and most of it is stuff you don't want (like obnoxious character outlines).

2. The games didn't sell so well and the originals were still far outselling them, even twenty years after their release, so Beamdog had EVERY digital distributor stop selling the originals and ONLY sell the Enhanced Edition. If you want to buy a digital copy of the originals now, they're "bundled" into the Enhanced Edition. Now these scumbags can claim sales from people just wanting to buy the originals as their own.

3. The infamous 600+ bugs on launch. The game is still riddled with bugs (as even a perfunctory glance over their forums show) but the fact that it took nearly two years for them to get a game that had been working fine for 20 years to reach playability after launch is telling of their wild incompetence.

4. This is where we get to the ones that really piss people off. Beamdog couldn't just remaster the game, they had to fuck with the content too. New dialogue for existing NPCs like Jaheira, Viconia, Safana, Kivan, et cetera was written in to make the characters more progressive and leftist friendly. Beamdog shills will argue that "adding content isn't changing content XDDD" but it is when the new content changes the core personalities of the existing characters. This is in addition to adding a slew of their own LGBT (hitherto there were none in Baldur's Gate) NPCs, all flooded with OP attributes and magic items to encourage people to play them despite their cancer.

5. Siege of motherfucking Dragonspear.

The point of the post isn't that it's hard, just poorly designed. If you know it's coming you can prepare and beat it 100% of the time. If not, then you need to die and farm weapon energy. It's not challenging, just a waste of time.

Solace? You do realize how embarrassing it is to assume that people have their sense of self-worth tied to telling strangers on an anonymous website how good they are at old videogames right? I'm an adult with a job and a social life and other interests. I think Mega Man is on the whole pretty easy, but I'm not going to feel bad because I'm not good at Starcraft for example.
