Is this thing worth getting if I never owned the PS1? It's $40 now and I would be comfortable hacking it.

>> No.5576386

as long as you don’t want bluetooth, wifi, sd card slot, almost instant setup to have thousands of roms, large community, ability to do RGB out with an addon, ability to play dreamcast, more and newer emulator choices, among other things for $35 (raspberry pi) then sure do it.

Guys I already know about raspberry pi and use it for MAME, I just thought it might be worth looking at due to the controllers being authentic. It's nice having dedicated hardware instead of everything on a single box and I never got a PS1 as a kid so I don't know what I missed out on.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you, not-ever-owning-a-PS1-wise. Just make sure to replace the stock games with NTSC equivalents, as the eurogarbage versions preloaded on the system is shit, as others here and everywhere else have already said.

Actually the best way to play PS1 games is inarguably on PC through emulation with pgxp perspective correction, increased internal rendering resolution, wide-screen and fps mods etc but even taking this into consideration it sounds like in OP"s case the controllers alone will be worth the current price of the Playstation Classic package.

Don't forget the virtue signaling that's obviously a top priority for you. I personally listen to what the specific posters want instead of soapboxing about bullshit nobody cares about and OP (and others itt) seem to want new OEM controllers. I personally have plenty of controllers, know with great certainty that OEM Playstation controllers are notably superior to the kind of trash controllers you're no doubt using that lead you to think controllers are essentially worthless but go on believing your getting superior performance out of them.

That having been said I haven't used the classic controllers so I can't say for absolutely sure that they have the same quality as original controllers

>> No.5576546

>>5576535
They’re not the same quality. You’re just looking for attention, spewing uninformed garbage.
Did you just accuse me of virtue signaling and go on to explain how much more virtuous you are by responding better to OP? Yet you don’t even actually have any experience with the topic? You are truly the shittiest, most disingenuous poster in /vr/ history.

>>5576546
I'm discussing the thread's topic, dipshit. There are a lot of people, including posters in this very thread that say the quality is good.. How do you know it's not? Sort of convenient that you're above posting pictures of toys that might offer some credibility to your arguments. Perhaps you would like to offer a reasonable recommendation for alternative controllers at the same or lower NIB price point that meet OP's specifications instead of assuming he's a Trump supporter simply for wanting authentic controllers.

Clearly buying a Raspberry Pi is the only socially just way to smash the patriarchy

>$40
As someone who has looked at the available inventory of one national retailer's stores in their entire state and who has friends who have done the same at two other stores, I think people have no idea how many of these things Sony made and have been clogging up stock rooms since before Christmas. They made enough for Christmas and beyond based on Nintendo's NES/SNES Classic sales numbers and stores ordered as many as they thought they could sell based on those Nintendo numbers as well. They didn't do the typical Sony "low availability due to high customer demand" thing that they normally do, but in this case they absolutely should have.

This thing has already been $40 on at least two separate occasions depending where you shop, and they still didn't move many. I promise everyone here that unless Sony buys them back to bury in a desert, they will have to reach a regular price of $29.99 at some point, if not lower. Don't fall for any tricks some store managers might pull like leaving only 3-4 on the floor. There are pallets full in the back.

I'm waiting until our own store runs low before I buy one. I expect I'll be paying $20 or less.

>> No.5576709

>being this stingy
I assume most /vr/ posters are over 25 and have enough income to spare $20. Is it really worth waiting that long to save $10-20 for something you actually want?

I’m not getting into the debate of how questionably useless this emulator is. It’s a cool shelf ornament and comes with first-party USB PS1 controllers, which makes it a pretty good purchase.

Sony really shot their wad on this one, and the price is coming down to reflect it, I’m just questioning the rationale behind waiting months (or even another year+) just to save a few more bucks.
