Most people don't know how to search for new games on platforms but if you spend a little bit of time working on it you too can discover good games instead of being stuck with the same ten or so games everyone else talks about. Most people probably play less than 15 games per console.

What do you usually hear from people when talking about the PS1? Probably Metal Gear Solid or Crash or Spyro or Final Fantasy. Maybe Ape Escape or Medievil or Odd World. Rarely Klonoa, Threads of Fate, Mega Man Legends. Most people just play 10-15 games per console they have. Rarely anything more.

Romsites usually go around what's popular at the time, not what's the best. I dunno if that's different for Vimm or not due to how long it's been standing. I know that the Coolrom has Tekken 3 perpetually at first but the rest change.

One of the main factors behind the success of the PSX was, whether people want to admit it or not, piracy.
Thanks to using CDs as its game format, creating pirated copies and distributing them at lower prices was far easier than with other consoles at the time. Modding it so that it could read pirated CDs was very easy as well, so you have it.
The average person who simply wanted to buy a console to play games, and who didn't care exactly _what_ games, would obviously go for the PSX, being aware of this.

The PSX had around 8000 games released for it. Nobody can be fucked weeding through all that to find the hidden gems so they stick to the tried and true. That's why you see the same 10 games listed.

It doesn't matter if your starting point is to divide by genre, country of origin, developer, series, publisher etc, that's still a shit load of games to sort through.

The 16-bit and 8-bit libraries are smaller and a lot of people have made a point of playing every single game in those libraries, not to mention emulation is more accessible for those systems. The ROMs for the 8-bit/16-bit systems are far smaller than the PSX ISOs. It's much easier to download a complete NES romset than the entire PSX library.

So it seems logical that it would require quite a bit of research to determine which PSX games are worth playing.

Yes its called sort by genre or find a nice recommendations list, see what games look interesting from screenshots, look them up on youtube, and download if they look good, easy as that. With many genres you can just find lists like this
