Bloodstone Prison wasn't scary at all.

The haunts and zombies didn't intimidate me. I can deal with haunts because I am proficient enough with the sword. We both played the Killing of Timer by JIS. Backstab them or get behind their backs and wail on them. Zombies can be incapacitated for a few moments or you can slip behind them if there is enough space. Not using stealth is a viable and maybe an easier way. The author included the note to play sneakily. I'm not sure if he meant that combat was supposed to be difficult. When I was playing Lost among the Forsaken I stumbled around the power station. I was walking in a badly lit room standing in shallow water. Suddenly I heard a moan and a zombie rose up. It startled me and made we want to run to the door, instead of taking out my sword and slash it into submission. Bloodstone prison didn't have these jumpscares. I wasn't startled. I wasn't grossed out. The ruined cell block with zombified prisoners was a nice detail. Felt like I was on my way to hell. Reading the warden's journal I expected to end up in an underground hideout with a big seat and a portal to the netherworld where I had to fight Jiggiwiddi. Not an office. That was dissonant. It is a nice you are given a holy one-shot weapon to deal with the boss. It is difficult to aim and the boss explodes like a sunburst device, so you have to keep your distance. Because the final battle took place in a plain room it didn't feel like an accomplishment, like in Seeds of Doubt. The boss was just another thing to kill.

Bando is an interesting addition to the lore. Maybe the Keepers aren't that all-knowing. It sure would make the criticism against the Keepers a bit more comprehensible. Maybe Garrett isn't that skilled after all. There seems to be a dynamic here, maybe similar to Artemus and Garrett, that sadly won't be explored further.

This FM also had a weird puzzle. I thought the bit about the candle was just fluff, but you actually have to put out the flame. Yet he is still caught in the necromancers spell, because he walks from the alter to the safe for all eternity. He just resets. Which was an odd sight, just like the scared zombified servant that would either hobble or float away.

I just downloaded a shitload of FMs and I'm looking for more actually.
I've actually only played a few levels from Thief 1 and 2 actually, but in Thief 2 at some point I realized I could just get a guard to notice me, hit it with the blackjack like 6 times, and then it starts running to find another guard, but if I run behind it while it is running and hit it again it knocks it out without killing it, exactly like it would have done if I'd snuck up behind and hit it to begin with.

This allows me to cheese my way through sections with a ton of guards that wouldn't be possible otherwise, without killing anyone, but it feels almost like brute force cheating kind of. Is this normal to do?

I'd twist that around. It is an excellent game, but it kinda is for retards. It's one of those game that at some point you realize how easy it is, and that some part of the difficulty is just for immersion's sake. Remove the blackjack, and now you have an actually balanced game.

TDS is the only Thief with a decent finished texture pack. I don't remember what it's called though. Haven't played that one in the better half of a decade.
The Thief Gold HD pack that made the rounds some years ago is complete crap. It's just photosourced with no attention paid to actually matching the texture outside of "rock goes to rock. wood to wood". The extra trees and bushes are sprinkled around haphazardly with no regard to where they should logically be growing.

Of course not. I think Thief 2 is legit better and plays more to the gameplays strengths.
It would be perfect if it had juuust a bit of the fantastical element from Thief 1 however. But Thief 1 is a bit too full of tomb raiding imo.
Altogether Thief 1 and 2 are near a perfect duo. Thief 3 is still pretty great imo, especially considering the consolitus it suffered from. And had a better balance of heist and tomb raiding, but was weaker overall due to engine switch (weird bugs and what not), being made for console, and the graphics and animation fell further into the uncanny valley.

We will never be in agreement. That's why opinions.

This is THE way to play. It just projects your mind onto the screen - how you remember the "feel" of the game from back then, can't really describe it. It's special. Thank you, Anon!

>heh who cares about balancing the game, just let the player intentionally gimp himself if he wants to

im a HUGE thief fan but having unlimited quicksaves and the blackjack was objectively bad. yes, i do fucking gimp myself, but i shouldnt fucking have to do that

Nah, Garrett will always find some kind of way to fucking propel himself in the air at 100mph by slowly jumping onto a rope and die.

Has anyone done a full conversion of the Thief textures with that AI program yet?

I am not the guy who "discovered" these settings, just a random nostalgia-fag.

I wouldn't want high-res AI upscales of things until the AI allows a human element where a user can first run a draft, then select elements and define outlines using bezier vectors. Basically telling the AI what you know to be true about the details because you know the AI is incapable of coming to the correct conclusion. If you look at some of the ESRGAN upscaled backgrounds in the Resident Evil games, you can clearly see that simple street signs that are obviously supposed to read "Raccoon City" are not being properly recreated into text because the AI is still too stupid.
That, and of course why the hell would you put ultra-high-red textures on top of geometry that doesn't exceed 2048 polygons per screen?

Has anyone tried the "difficulty mod" on moddb? How is it?
