You just gotta mix it up.
Make a few irregular shaped streets. Make dedicated 2x2 or 2x1 building areas, so the commie blocks won't even spawn.
Add small parks every other area.
Mix up buisness and residence, especially 1x1 medium and high density buisness slots can make your city look classy.

Are they any good city builders that are straight forward with minimal micormanagement?

simcity 4 is pretty good, but there's a fair bit of micromanagement. At least in SC4 there's a good interface and the micromanagement makes sense.

But I want something even more simple, more light weight, even to the point of an incremental game. But I don't want it to be broken.

I'm not sure you understand the concept of those neighbourhoods. Nor ever really saw one in your life, but it's too early to call you stupid Yank.
Personally, I always find it hilarious how people try to escape "drab commie blocks" and then live in a developer-build American-style suburbs full of identical homes, one after another, with zero public transportation, services of any kind or even a grocery store, because they weren't included in the local development plan nor there is place to put them at all. But I guess having to go everywhere in your car is the most American thing imaginable and idiots dig that.
>inb4 commie blocks suck ass too
I never said they didn't. I'm just pointing out there is a fuckload of benefits to them and if you aren't a complete moron, you invest your pocket change into noise-dampering mats and and you can have a comfortable flat in area that had actual planning put into it, rather than just "buy cheap agrarian land, re-spec it for construction and shit out god-awful samey neighbourhood with nothing but houses there".

Pre-concrete slab commie blocks are peak comfy. They too have their own issues, but due to much smaller cubature, you can manage with even the shittiest neighbours with ease. And they have some lovely architecture design and concepts inside, rather than "cram as many people per square meter as feasible without feeling overcrowded".

Building on islands, shorelines, preserving "national park systems aka forests" is what adds charm to the maps.

Not gotta lie, I don't give a fuck about making pretty cities in SC4. I just make ultracircles of wealth generation for maximum population and money. You know you're doing mass transit right when your bus system actually generates a good profit.

Anyone else cheat garbage by running a single incinerator at absolute minimal funding? I figure if I can still keep air and water ultra-clean, it's not that big of an issue.

Original anon here and nice knowing this is finally added as a game option. Because when I still bothered with the game, you had to either file-edit it or mod it (which was essentially pre-packed file-edit anyway).
Still won't return to the game, as it has too many flaws and they still didn't fix the way how traffic operates, despite literally incorporating mods into the core mechanics and still fucking failing to do it right

>> No.5579427

>>5578448
>You know you're doing mass transit right when your bus system actually generates a good profit.
Quite impossible without the mod allowing you to put bus stations on road tile, rather than taking out a non-road tile.

As for pollution, have you tried placing your dirty stuff in corners? Since pollution spreads in circles, this cuts out 3 directions entirely. This means you have less overall pollution (since 3/4 of it doesn't exists) AND the reminder of it is all concentrated in single spot, far away from people.

Think of it like running a business. Land is free. Low density requires least services. Fill up the map with low density. Provide services only when asked for and be conservative with them. Think of it as raising land value in areas for the sole purpose of getting more property tax revenue. Zone up with care.

Mods implemented some auto-sage thing specifically for /vr/, so any thread that is a week old now will stop bumping, regardless of activity.

So now, the slow, but nice and mellow threads such as the Builder/Sim/Manager threads (which mind you, were already crammed together because individual generals for those were already too slow to survive naturally on /vr/), can't really exist efficiently on this board anymore.
Aren't you glad the mods are here to do nothing about endless shitposting and bait threads, and then implementing measures like these which actually kills real discussion?

Trying to start Simcity 2000. But since I'm /n/, I'm trying to figure out how much the public transportation works, e.g. sim trips using multiple different methods. Surprisingly, road trip + rail trip works. I'm afraid anything beyond that does not work.
My method was to build a road and rail network, then zone industry on one end, then zone residential closer and closer until both developed.
I'll have to do more tests.
It seems the rail station has no maintenance cost? That might make rail-only city more viable than Simcity 3000 and Simcity 4.
Actually, I just remembered that the manual said that the simulation does a trip on the road and if it encounters public transportation, it attempts it 50% of the time. That means 50% of the trips would fail on a pure rail city. It might kind of work, but it won't be a healthy city. Oh well. That also explains the many abandoned buildings I saw in my test.
But my finding is good news in a way, since rail can be used to relieve and support arterial routes. Sims can ride their cars to and from the stations. I think it's not possible in sc3k, but it's been more than a decade since I played that game.
