Dunno if this goes here, but I got a GBA with a flashcart and I wanna play retro stuff on it, I know the system is known for some NES/SNES/GENESIS/ETC.. ports, but I wanna know if they're good ports or not, like for example the DKC games, Tales of Phantasia, Puzzle Fighter II Turbo or Phantasy Star Collection.
Thanks for the help.

>> No.5568061

The breath of fire ports run beautifully and are a joy to play. Also the final fantasy ports for it are also worth playing.

Most are flawed, with terrible sounds and colors, or sometimes glitches. But many are still good either because of extra content (translations, levels and content the developers didn't have the chance to put the first time around) or because they are worthy remixes that stand on their own as their own game (Shining Force 1 remake, Gegege no Kitarou from PS1, Super Mario Advance 4 which has e-World, almost its own Lost Levels version of SMB3)

It's funny how Gane Boy Advance isn't retro when ports of old games needed to be graphically downgraded for it, and not just in resolution. SNES has capabilities GBA doesn't. Nearly all the popular games for it are ports, remakes, or stylistically identical to SNES games. Superstar Saga is like Mario RPG but with worse graphics.

At least 50% of ports to GBA are lazy cashgrab trash that are well below what the hardware is capable of. Mortal Kombat Advance is the most notorious example. NES Classics are mostly great games and very faithful other than the lower resolution ofc. Super Ghouls n Ghosts is a great port with a new mode that adds a bunch of stuff and removes most of the slowdown.

GBA is the last game system to have oldskool ROM cartridges. Starting on the DS, they went to using Flash ROMs and the game simply loaded into RAM instead of mapping directly into the CPU's address space.

The GBA is the last game system to have oldskool ROM cartridges. Starting on the DS, they went to using Flash ROMs and the game simply loaded into RAM instead of mapping directly into the CPU's address space. Some are like the black cartridges for the GB, but others are WSC-only, displaying an error message when played on an original WS (eg, FFIV). That makes this trickier, but still clear: WSC(-only) games are definitely not retro (unlike GBC-only games, which premiered before the year 2000). Surprised nobody pointed out Mother 1+2.
Sure, they're inferior ports from the technical standpoint because of sound limitations and screen resolution, as every GBA port, but on the bright side, it has the definitive version of Mother 1 with a functional run button that doesn't glitch out the NPCs (like the NES proto) and the full ending, also if you're using a flashcart you can apply Tomato's translation.
Mother 2 doesn't have any new thing but it does have a glitch that lets you beat the final boss without praying.
