The game in the picrel is proto-Spore life evolution simulator for the SNES called E.V.O. Search For Eden and is the most comfy game I've played since I was a kid. The comfiness just hits you so hard you'll melt. I think many people think this an edutainment game and that's why they won't bother playing it. But trust me... if you like lazy comfiness, you'll love EVO.

Yeah it's pretty good. The prequel for PC-88 was also translated a few years ago.

LOL beat me to it although it's more accurate to call it the "original version". OP might also enjoy Seventh Cross on Dreamcast.

>"original version".
They're very different games, aren't they? The PC-88 one is like a standard RPG, while E.V.O is an action side-scroller RPG.

Great game, for more comfy feels, Simcity for SNES with money cheat.

>> No.5559238

i actually played evo about 25 years ago and i loved it. i played it with my niece a few years ago and she was entranced by it too.

i beat it every year or two. it's badass. i bought my copy for like 27.99 minus my employee discount years ago from funcoland (2002'ish?). i'm always shocked when i see what assholes are trying to charge for it nowadays.

Yes they are that's why I refer to it as an earlier version. A prequel is a game that's released later but is set earlier.

You have to really REALLY want to enjoy it to overlook the clunkiness but I ended up completing and loving it

>> No.5559317

Although the PC98 game is totally different and really simple in it's own right, I fucking feel in love with it and like it more then the SNES game. Its a perfect, short, JRPG. Finished it in one sitting at around 9 hours.
Highly recommend it to anyone thats played the SNES game as it has a translation out now. The SNES game is more like an action re-imagination of the original one.

Gameplay is incredibly repetitive and it's pretty mediocre overall.

more like if you like eating shit, you'll love evo. if i wanted to play a game where all i did was grind, i'd play tony hawk's pro skater.

>> No.5560130

its a game better enjoyed by abusing savestates actually, its not a matter of git gud you could just end up taking the wrong evolution once and its a pain in the ass to grind to get the points for something else. Hardcores might cry about save scumming but the game is far better using save states it's actually kind of fun at that point.

Glad to see people still out there having fun with the PC-98 original game. Still a fond memory working on the translation.

>GRIND GAME BAD
Also it's not as much grinding as you're making it out to be, a game being good or shit isn't determined by whether it has some grinding.

Anyone else think this game had a pretty good soundtrack? I thought the songs were pretty memorable for the time periods they were set in? I dunno, maybe it's just me but I loved those tracks.

Horns:

The first segment of the game is perfection. But after you reach land creature era, it starts going downhill pretty quick.

It can both be comfy and uncomfy.
Farming evo points is simple comfy fun, but with the lack of i-frames and if you're underevolved certain encounters can be severely uncomfy.
Comfy or not, a fantastic snes game.

I think I finished it in one sitting the first time I played it, played all night.
And when I was done I immediately started another.

Last time I played it I streamed it for some e-friends, on a place where we usually stream movies.
I decided to always move forward so I was getting fucking rekt by the first amphibian boss.

One of those games that would need more spiritual successors.
The base stuff is alright, but it could be expanded upon heavily and made greater. Just like Actraiser imo.

Also watch the TAS, it's the most hilarious thing if you've played the game.
I didn't know about the tackle move before I watched the TAS. Total gamechanger, made a beaked dino turtle focusing on tackling that was pretty fun after that

Not very well apparently. Everyone has played this except you and a few other newfriends.

Just don't become a human. They fucking suck because you can't abuse the "grow horn, remove horn, grow horn, remove horn, etc." trick to regain health.

Without the horn trick, the final boss is fucking impossible. Also, when you become a human you can't go back anymore. Once your ape is humanoid enough, it's impossible to transform into anything else.

Last I finished the game I actually became human and the final boss wasn't that hard.
I'm not sure why it was so easy, but I think the angle, speed and damage of the main attack was just so good it was easy to overwhelm a lot of the phases.

>> No.5563796

>>5561240
yeah the big problem is level design
it's way too flat
if flat levels had been just the amphibian stages that would have been one thing. But it kept going, even the final map is full of levels that are nothing but flat ground with enemies.
