Celes is the main character of the 2nd half of the game. She's just as important to the story as Terra.

Until you get the new airship, then all form of "main character" is erased and the linear plot becomes a bunch of segregated story arcs for each character.

Even if not recruited, though, Terra still shows up to save everybody when Kefka dies and his tower starts crumbling, and she pretty much gets the last scene on the airship all to herself.

Terra is the primary protagonist of World of Balance.
Celes is the primary protagonist of World of Ruin.
Anyone who claims one or the other is the "real" protagonist of the entire game is just trying to overexaggerate the importance of their waifu.

In case people still haven't noticed FFVI uses something called ensemble cast which spreads the narrative focus over multiple characters instead of everything being about a single protagonist. Why is this so hard understand?

Yes and Terra's world of balance and Celes's world of ruin is congruent with the conflicts they face; Terra's existential conflict rooted in her circumstances of birth, versus Celes's more worldly troubles stemming from her life choices. Terra has to wonder if she is capable of love, while Celes has to wonder if she is deserving of love. And while I can easily empathize with the inherent angst of being "not like other girls", the privileged but no more fortunate Celes is certainly relateable and, in fact, is completely necessary for Terra to find her own confidence within herself and vice versa. They Complete each other. God this game was brilliant.

The plot outright forgets about Terra pretty early into the game. She stops being important as other characters get introduced.

That actually makes a lot of sense. You can just say that Terra was a ruthless general under the slave crown as it's not as if we saw Celes be one.

Take off the crown, focus more on what she did before the crown got removed (as opposed to that one lame reference to her frying soldiers) and go from there. Leo's, Locke's and Kefka's relationship can all still work, even the opera might still work.

The Celes-Locke betrayal thing won't make sense anymore, but it's not like it ever did. Going with Square's rule of three girls, one character will need to be genderflipped though, so we'll need to swap Setzer for Daryl

I don't see why Celes is considered the main character of the World of Ruin. After she leaves the island she doesn't have a single scene ever again aside from the ending. She doesn't get any more exposure than any other character, you just start with her.

I think it's pretty obvious why people consider Celes the main character of the WoR. You start with her and complete several areas before getting the airship. The rest of the story is entirely non-linear and there's no other character who takes the lead. So it falls to Celes by default.
