Yeah, the 32-bit conversion of EWJ2 is not the definitive. It was ported by a different studio and they didn't do controls 1:1, resulting in less accurate and slippery controls (especially annoying on Puppy Love stages).
IMO it's SNES>Genesis>Saturn>PSX
Unlike Jim 1, Jim 2 was a little better on SNES, but MD version is still pretty good.
Saturn has new backgrounds and music, but fucked controls, and PS1 is just the Saturn version but without certain background effects Saturn had, so that's definitely the worst one.

Oddly enough I had a version of this and pitfall for the pc that allowed you to restart from a level if you already got there. Looking at the snes version now, it looks like it'd be pretty hard to finish the game in one go imo.

It's not a terribly easy game your first time through but it's not that difficult either. Down the Tubes and For Pete's Sake might be sticking points though. Maybe a few of the later levels too but there's nothing really that bad and continues are easy enough to earn if you just suck. Starting a new game at any level really wouldn't make too much of a difference, honestly. More of a convenience.
Also the SNES version was always harder to me because of its gross resolution.

Well I should clarify DOS. There was a compilation disk of EWJ 1 and 2, the former being entirely separate from the earlier Activision port. These games were basically DOS ports of the standard EWJ 1 and 2, specifically EWJ1 wasn't the "Special Edition" like on Sega CD or PC, and EWJ2 was a port of the SNES version, which lacks a few levels.
