Thoughts on the new backlit screens for Game Boy Color? After the hard-to-fit AGS 101 mod we now have three new 'drop in' screens, the BennVenn 'Freckle Shack', the McWill and the Midwest Embedded screens, all of which should offer an easier solution to getting a backlit screen in your GB Color. Exciting times ahead.

I think it's awesome that they're continuing to find new ways to convince people to butcher their consoles for muh backlight. My collection of CIB GBCs has skyrocketed in value from $5/each to $100 each in a few short years. If we can get like 100 million people to fuck of theirs prices could go through the roof.

I backlit my Game Boy Pocket for use with the Game Boy Camera. Taking pictures is more pleasurable with a backlight, so the SP is a okay solution, but unfortunately the SP's form factor makes it harder to use than top-loading Game Boys. I opted to mod my GBP because I wanted both a backlight and the ability to easily take selfies. That might sound silly, but whenever I bring my GBCamera to a social gathering, everyone wants to take a selfie.
The mod was a huge pain in the ass and cost a fair amount of money because I didn't already have a soldering iron etc. The new GBColor lcds that OP is talking about are probably a better deal if you want to backlight a gameboy on the cheap and don't already have materials to do it.
When I actually want to play Game Boy games I use my 3ds. I only installed the mod strictly for camera utility.

Don't all the currently available light mods and screen replacements require removal of some of the plastic surrounding the screen to make them fit? And each one requires a different bit to be cut so you can't swap between them without further damage.
Also the midwest screen isn't even the right size and the bezels protrude into the viewing window.

I don't see a point. I've been a Game Boy enthusiast for over 20 years, and I was into modding and swapping screens back when you could get an AGS-101 on ebay for under 20 bucks. If I want to play a GBC game with a backlight, the GBA SP does exactly that, no modding required. The only reason hipsters are buying into this shit is because they want the convenience of a backlight while still getting le ebin retro hipster nerd cred for toting around a retro Game Boy system.

I especially don't see the point here, because the original LCD screen in the GBC is fucking GORGEOUS when you play it inp proper lighting. Those systems were designed to look good under natural light, and replacing the screens with those backlit chink models is disgraceful. At least if they were modding an origina GBA to have a backlit screen, I would understand because those screens were notoriously shit-looking, even in direct light, plus the horizontal layout makes them way more comfy to play, especially with the shoulder buttons.

You're right, the GB emulation is perfect, on survival kids some sprites didn't move at the same time the background did and in LSDJ the sounds are sometimes off.

But that's the only thing thats noticeable.
I'd recommend it.

So here is the question, is there a flashcard for gbc? Only reason to buy this is for pokemon, but playing other are probably fun too

I see. I actually ordered one just a couple days ago, after finding a good price on a (green) GB Micro, that should be in the mail tomorrow. I've never used one before, but I love how it looks. Seemed easier to get a hold of than an AGS101 SP as well.

>>5559180
There's GB/GBC Everdrives, but they're not cheap, especially if you want all the features. Unsure if there's any alternatives.

EZFlas)/Everdrive GB emulation is perfect.

GBC emulation is not so much. Many games have issues or sprite corruption. Crystal and any rom hack based on it especially.

Yea, but they are pricey.

A good flashcart is around $50 (ElCheapo) but it lacks a RTC. If you eant all the features you are spending $130 for an Everdrive GB X7.

Or you can get a cheap cart without a RTC and just get $1 bootlegs of the few games that need one.

>> No.5563026

>>5562967

None of the $1 bootlegs have an RTC. In fact, very few have an RTC. Most just have a patched rom that removes the whole time system.

https://shop.insidegadgets.com/ has the cheapest flash carts but not the usual SD/MicroSD type, these can only be flashed with the RW thing they sell.
Tho if all you want is pokeymans, aliexpress is filled with bootlegs that work and save just fine, some sellers even have romhacks.
The site says these same bootlegs can be reflashed, so that's an even cheaper alternative once you have the writer

The GB/C Pokemon bootlegs almost always work perfectly fine. They wont work with Pokémon Stadium though.

The GBA ones can be hit or miss, a lot lack enough save memory so they tend to corrupt when your save gets big enough (usually right after beating the elite four). They also won’t work with palpark on the DS games.

I didn't even know you should find bootlegs for $1 any more. I thought zoomers had driven the price up to like five bucks already. Most bootlegs didn't have an RTC but I have plenty I paid less than a buck for that do.

You must be young. I was collecting Game Boy shit back in the early 2000s after the Advance had just come out. There was a time before the era of AVGN where retro consoles were cheap as fuck, especially the handhelds. I got a mint-in-box GBA Micro, and it was the rare red and gold Famicom edition, for like 15 bucks back in 2008 or so. That same model is going for $300+ nowadays.
