Hey /vr/,
I’m an 18 year old collector of retro video games and I need some advice about prices, condition and places to search for Retro games at. Since I live in the Pittsburgh area, I really only have two chances of finding them. The first being a series of locations called “The Exchange” which also sell records and action figures. Second being Flea Markets, but sometimes the games can be in horrible condition.

Does anybody know if there are other types of stores that sell this type of stuff? I’m sick of using eBay so much.

There was a game shop near my house that sold Famicom carts. I managed to purchase both the system and about 20 games before it closed down. Despite having two disk system games, I never really got the chance to get the thing itself.

I have a disk system, but it's not for sale. Don't have many games for it, but I don't want to order another one from Japan. I have a fuck ton of Super Famicom Carts though I bought years and years ago. I bought one of those Two Hundred Cart Boxes. At one time I had that Mario/Wario Game that used the Mouse that was never released here in the states. I think I sold it for $20 but that was probably four years ago now.

Haven't made up my mind about my Famicom Carts though. I keep feeling like I want to keep them. I have Abadox CIB, All the Dragon Quests, I think my Turtles 2 is bootleg along with MegaMan 4. I have that Pacman game that has the Upsidedown Cross in it. That game's pretty cool and a must own for Famicom in my opinion.

I would hope not. SNES and Saturn Games aren't typically two dollar games. I have hundreds of Atari 2600 games. Hundreds. Nobody wants them. Well, very few want them. I like the console more than I like the games. I really enjoy knowing I own a Heavy Sixer.

What would you want to see in a /vr/ store, OP? Would you want to see an old system hooked up and running people could play? What would matter to you what you would see in selection?

These stores are getting rarer and rarer because they're becoming unsustainable. What would make one of these store more appealing?

It was dogshit for a long time, but it has become quite decent in "recent" times. Many games work perfectly, some do not. Same as most systems, really. Anons who bitch about Saturn emulation being dogshit are poorfags with severely outdated hardware or collectors who will bitch about emulation while they're in the old folks' home to whatever poor nurse drew the short straw and has to change their bedpan.

If you want to emulate disc-based systems, you need a semi-modern PC. That's every disc-based system. If you want to collect, fine, but there are many games that you will never be able to play while I have already played them. Good luck finding pic related or link related: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dragon-Force-Sega-Saturn-CD-Complete-CIB-w-Case-Manual-RAM-Cartridge-Sticker/293065903959?epid=4066&hash=item443c16cf57:g:FOwAAOSws-1cw9Tq

The one thing you'll never experience with emulation is the weight of a title. And no I don't mean physical weight. It's hard to explain, but ever since I was a child there was a certain patience given to a title you had invested in. When you got one of these games as a child, it carried weight with it. This was the game you got, you're stuck with it, and you're going to try and absorb as much enjoyment as you can out of it.

>/vr/ has always had a financial burden tied to it.

Growing up in poverty means I do not really give a shit about that. The only games where I care about that sort of thing are certain arcade games and pinball, and that's due to the nature of those games in question. It is mandatory to have the physical game for those games to be enjoyed. Despite all that, paying a lot of money for something does not mean it is good.

I think you're missing his point. When you could only have one game for a while, you HAD to find some enjoyment in it. Even if it was complete and utter garbage you knew you or your parents had sunken money into it and it would be a while before the same could happen with another title. You had to just bite the bullet and try to enjoy what little bit you could to make it all feel like it wasn't such a waste. Sometimes it grew on you, sometimes it didn't, but this overall feeling is completely lost with emulation.

Yeah. He was addicted to buying increasingly expensive cameras and lenses, often for cameras he didn't own. The point of purchase was where his enjoyment peaked. A couple times I had to wait 90 minutes for him to buy the one item he went there for. He'd talk in circles with the clerk who pretended to be his friend. There was nothing for me to look at there, because everything just is what it is. He was really shit at photography, couldn't even take a selfie that didn't make him look like a pedophile, and had never heard of a lightbox. One time he asked me to add some flashlight filters to an Amazon order. I declined, because he didn't own those flashlights.

Ma and pa type stores are the best for this, sometimes you can take advantage of the owner’s niceness and get a great deal before turning around and dumping it on ebay at a higher price to some nostalgic boomer faggot with too much money.

Why wouldn't a store charge eBay prices? I mean it's what the item is fucking worth. Often I price things slightly cheaper than ebay prices just so I can move them with out the hastle of moving things online. I mean what people are willing to pay for an item is exactly what it's worth. Do you just not understand business?

I started collecting Atari in the late 80s and most systems since. It's a terrible waste of time, resources, space, etc. I won't sell them because hoarding goes hand in hand with collecting. Honestly collecting is the least worthwhile thing you could do in the hobby. Playing games or seeking rare unpreserved items like manuals and releasing hq scans would be better for the hobby as a whole over just collecting shit. I don't care that I got stuff cheap because I'll never sell it anyway, so there is no sum gain.

They should just sell on eBay then. What kind of incel pays bills on a physical location when eBay exists? I won't pay a premium just because some dumbass is too lazy to ship items. If it's eBay prices, I leave the store and buy on eBay. Buying online let's you pick and choose better condition or more complete games. Fuck brickandmorterfags.

90% of people who price from eBay are too lazy to shop an item.

>Why wouldn't a store charge eBay prices?
Because as a brick and mortar store in an age where you're competing with the likes of eBay, Amazon, craigslist and other online shops, you need to have some sort of competitive advantage over said venues besides instant gratification. Why the hell would I even bother with a retro shop if the prices are the same as eBay's when I could just make a few clicks on eBay in the first place, get it shipped straight to me and usually pay less because I also didn't have to pay for shipping or taxes? Why would I waste time and money travelling to shops sifting through piles of shovelware garbage for a CHANCE to find a "hidden gem" when I could cut the middle man and find what I'm looking for in an instant online?

You said it yourself that you lower prices than eBay's in order to get shit sold in a timely manner, so you must have some perception that collectors and casual spenders alike don't buy shit if they perceive no value from it.

Hell, if anything I would ask if you don't know how the fuck to run to run a business if you think a brick-and-mortar will last selling games at the same prices as eBay.

Do you even comprehend what the word premium means? Fucking dumb ass doesn't even understand the benefit of having an item in his hands before he commits to a purchase. Please, stick to amazon faggot.

>I take it you guys haven't been to many /vr/ stores lately. Their prices are usually 50% higher than ebay's sold prices. If not nearly double.

It's no wonder there's not very many stores left. With faggots out there like you. You're no better than a fat bitch that turns up her nose to a Gamecube controller for Ten Bucks because she could get one at a Five and Below for Five Bucks. Chinese Knock offs do not equal a fucking genuine item.
