BTW, before anyone else points it out, what you're actually asking for is "Tolkien-esque fantasy". Which is really more a 20th century thing and doesn't really have anything to do with medieval times or Europe in general. Even the dragons and castles (which weren't in Lord of the Rings) are still just generic concepts that weren't exclusive to Europe. The "knight in shining armor" thing IS taken from Europe though, but that's basically it.

ogre battle is similar to dragon force. instead of one big map ogre battle is a bunch of smaller maps.

try ogre battle 64 first. it's more accessible.

Ogre Battle is a fine game, but it's very different from what he's talking about in that specific post, much closer to Langrisser than Dragon Force, not that he shouldn't play it or anything.

well the combat is automated...and although not visually similar, it has a lot of mechanical similarities. automation with special moves and strategies you can set for the battle.

also the real time aspect of moving around on the map. there is kingdom building in a sense but of course you accomplish this on a smaller scale since you go from map to map in ogre battle instead of one large continuous map in dragon force.

you can also search for shit in towns and upgrade soldiers but also your "generals" like in dragon force.

i had dragon force back in the day (sold all my saturn shit for a ps1...no regrets although i loved the saturn) and ogre battle was the closest game i ever played to dragon force. especially in the later stages of ogre battle snes and 64 when the maps get larger.

i also liked the freedom of ogre battle since it didn't force you into using roads on the map like in dragon force.

anywho...fans of one should def try the other imo. i've ranted enough.

Dragon Force has the added layer of kingdom management and empire building which is non existent in Ogre Battle, which is simply tactical battle map to tactical battle map akin to Langrisser which one or two extras thrown in

>> No.5548610

>>5548585
>>5548602
Also, I should add to this, similar to Langrisser and other SRPGs, Ogre Battle is the individual units against individual units, which you are able to micromanage, you're able to send to any point on the map, turn around, etc. in the middle of battle, whereas Dragon Force is one commander, controlling a 100 man army vs another commander with a 100 man army, and you simply give directions and have no control over your units outside of the directives you give such as "attack, melee, x formation, y formation" outside of watching your 100 units battle their 100 units, you are able to cast magic spells over the battlefield to boost your chances, it's a very different style of play than most SRPGs

i was saying the combat in both ogre battle and dragon force is automated. in both games you can set tactics (or give a command) then you can interrupt the battle at any time to change tactics or to perform a special move. and they both have a rock, paper, scissors aspect in what troops you use and how the battle can play out. they both also have formation considerations for the combat. although delivered differently, fundamentally these aspects perform the same mechanic in gameplay.

there is a lack of kingdom management in ogre battle. i mean there is some but not anything substantial.

i just have good memories of trying to find a game like dragon force with no luck and discovering ogre battle on snes and 64.

my only experience with langrisser is the growlanser generations game on ps2. i loved both games in that set as well as urushihara's character art.
