A quite nice little game and one of the staples of the 8-bit computer era. If only First Star Software weren't the game equivalent of Metallic. "If you download our old games, we will find you."

Boulder Dash isn't that obscure of a game. There have been various remakes on newer systems and First Star claims they still make money from it.

The original game would probably be more obscure if it didn't have console ports.

Boulder Dash, Archon, and Lode Runner. Three 8-bit staples all ported to the NES and ruined by being given the cutesy Japanese treatment.

Have you compared them? The NES port was made 5 years after the computer ones, an eternity in technology terms, so it has substantially enhanced sound, music, cutscenes, and other bits.

Ah that's true. You have to keep in mind that LR was originally an Apple II game and it was ported verbatim to C64, Atari 800, and other platforms without any improvement for the hardware of those machines.

NES Lode Runner got the Japan treatment which is why it has cutesy sprites and music. Also NES code is generally more compact than on the C64 or Atari, thus you can get a more complex game in less space.

It's really easy for some kid today to emulate games or buy shit on eBay and then act all high and mighty about it. But people who were actually around at the time (like me) didn't own all systems, and didn't play everything. Calling them "retro" is also a dead giveaway of being too young to have used the systems when they were relevant.

Scrolling the screen on the NES is cake compared to how it works on any of the other platforms in OP pic and with all the memory space saved, there's more room for music and stuff like that. That and it takes less code to bank cartridges ROMs than load a disk file, although an early game like LR is only 20k and doesn't have any banking.

I have only played NES and Gameboy ports of Boulder Dash as well as Boulder Dash EX for GBA and I like them. Boulder Dash: Rocks for DS is meh. Boulder Dash's gameplay formula never gets old (with the proper upgrades per generation of course).

It's interesting the fact that Boulder Dash's original creator wasn't even a videogame designer, just like the designer of Tetris.

No, absolutely not. Peter Liepa had a degree in control theory and other such stuff. Dude sounds like a real egghead.

"For the most part, I was extremely satisfied with how the game turned out. Not only was it fun, but it contained the full range of human emotions: greed (hunting for diamonds), violence and sadism (smashing helpless creatures with rocks), OCD (wanting to clean all the dirt from a cave), and even humor (if you think being crushed by a rock is funny). If I could go back and do it all again, I probably wouldn't change a thing except, oh, maybe make the levels a bit bigger."

And that...

"I didn't make any more games because of not liking the systems that came after [the Atari 400]. A lot of people loved the C64, but I didn't care for it myself. And the IBM PC was much worse. The Amiga seemed great and I could have done a lot of neat things on there, but I wasn't sure how much money I could make programming for it. Game sales back then were unpredictable and went in boom-and-bust cycles. PCs weren't any good for gaming until the mid-90s and by that point I thought I'd been out of the business too long to get back into it."
