What PS1 games do you think that utilized the hardware to its fullest
and what games can´t you believe is able to run on the system?

Pretty sure Silent Hill did it. Also Vagrant Story.

terracon, threads of fate, omegaboost

I honestly feel like Spyro was a series that took every ounce of the ps1 and put it to use. Insomniac achieved fluid gameplay and a pleasing art style all with the ps1.

>> No.5531235

games that utilized pre-rendered backgrounds were neat, and acceptable at the time— titles that went full out 3D with large open spaces (think twisted metal) were definitely taking full advantage of the system. gun fire, particle effects, and carnage. Mind there are definitely hickups here and there. This could be said about most titles from this era. Games today are not as optimized as ones from the 90s. Programmers from this era do not share the same concerns about hardware limitations like in the past— this has lead to sloppy coding and inefficient use of resources.

Why does everyone always mention Silent Hill?
It has one of the worst draw distances ever, and hides it cleverly.

Games that really impress on the PSX would be
>vagrant story, for looking so damned impressive
>Dino Crisis 2, for having such fast paced combat and smooth controls snd no frame rate drops, ever
>Twisted Metal 2 for having a huge draw distance, and allowing up to 9 bots in certain levels with you.
>Final Fantasy 9, for looking so damned good.

You are obviously extremely ignorant. Silent Hill 1 is a technological marvel and it's no less than wizardry that team Silent even made it run on the PS1

It utilized discs' ability to play DVD quality video, something you couldn't do before on consoles.

They also invested in real actors (Mark Hamill) and real writers.

It's a cool concept, but apparently cost too much.

Cut scenes in WC IV are still more real looking than anything today lol.

It's called Motion Decoder (MDEC) chip and the PS1 had it, a chip dedicated to FMV playback
If you seriously think WC4 pushed the limits of the PS1 then perhaps you haven't seen any other game on the system.

e.g. SoulReaver utilized streaming data from the disc and there were no loading between the stages.
That shit is pushing the hardware,
putting a bunch of video files on the disk and calling the default system API functions to play them, is not.

Dino Crisis 1 is pure survival horror kino. Slow, methodical, conservative. Start with it. It's a blast if you're looking for something that makes you use your head to survive and puts you on edge all the time. Plus plenty of routes for you to go through if you want to replay it. Dino Crisis 2 is more arcadey. It's fun and packed with action but not really what to expect from the survival horror genre. If you have played Deep Fear it's more akin to it.
