So let me get this straight: not needlessly spending money on hard copies of video games makes me a poorfag?

Video games are an entertainment experience. You're supposed to have a physical copy of the game, and ideally a copy of the instruction manual to know juuuuust the right amount of information about the game prior to playing it.

If you play a game using a ROM then that totally changes things. It's no longer an entertainment experience. It's just some challenge to be beaten using save states, until you quickly move on to the next game. No reward. No nothing.

Original hardware or bust.

No one says this. It's if you can't afford flash carts that you're a poorfag.

Right. And the space it all takes up could be used for other things. I'm happy with a PC connected to a good quality display and a comfortable controller. All that box and manual stuff can live on the internet and occasionally my PC.

No, but still playing those games you aren't buying/renting/borrowing does. You don't make the rules except for yourself, and your own rules say "I canz playz this shit for freez, dayum nigga! fuck tha poleece!"

No, it could also mean you're either a youngfag who wasn't around during retro times, or a guy who didn't take care of his games during college years.

PDF copies of most game manuals are one internet search away.

Whether or not to use save states is up to your choice and your willpower. I have not save-scummed a game since I was a teenager in the early 2000s. Occasionally, I will use a save state in a game with a password system where I just don't want to bother with memorizing them.

In addition to all that I have long released myself of any obligations to play games the "intended" or "right" way because there is no such agreed upon thing. I play my way.

Outdated belief system that has little usage in the 21st century. How many youtube videos did you watch this month with pirated content? How many images have you viewed on 4chan which included pirated content? Why are you worried only about retro video game piracy yet pirate every other media at every turn?

I sold several games in college to afford gas money to go home and see my parents every other weekend. I do not regret that, and I also have no desire to get them back. What good would they have done for me to sit on a shelf for the last ten years? The only games I have done that with are games my parents bought me for Christmas and birthdays. The yard sale and thrift store stuff I've long ebay'd years ago to fund things like building my PC (something which I can't just download).

Because that is exactly the kind of thinking actual poorfags have. Actual rich people are very frugal and would find it absurd to pay money for something you can get for free, even if it's technically "illegal". The irony. Modern degenerate internet society has brainwashed everyone into believing that everything is free as long as you can get your hands on it and get away with it. People have gotten used to that. They like it, so they believe it. And some brainwash themselves further by coming up with secondary excuses to justify it and even make it seem like the righteous thing to do. Yes, the brainwashing really is real.

So are you going to stop using 4chan and youtube? They're both pillars of the modern internet society and feature non-stop copyright violations. You can hardly find a thread on this site which doesn't have some kind of unlicensed use and reproduction of official artwork.

>> No.5529769

>>5529712
Copyright law is somewhat lenient. Most of what you see here and on Youtube is legal even without explicit permission from the rights holder. There are obvious infractions on both, but it's not the majority of the content.

Downloading full romsets is a different story, it's not like some freeware bundle where express rights have been granted to use them at no cost. There is no blanket public domain or "abandonware" argument because every video game ever made is still covered unless copyright was expressly given up by the rights holder, thanks to good old Sonny Bono. Everything about it is not permitted under international copyright law.

>> No.5530065

>>5529769
>Most of what you see here and on Youtube is legal even without explicit permission from the rights holder.
This is not true and is flimsy rationalization no more legal than the old fashioned argument about owning roms only for back-up purposes. When you upload a copyrighted image or video to 4chan you are illegally distributing that material in the public. And when you illegally download an image that has been distributed in this manner you're committing a crime there too. It's absurd, and no one in a thousand years is ever going to be arrested for downloading 30 year old game art, but it's still illegal.

>> No.5530194

Except what I said is true. Most of what you see here is legal. 4chan is primarily an imageboard by name, yes, but discussion is still the main content on this and many other boards. Many images, if not most, are either OC, parody, critique, etc. If we're looking at intent, and we should, most people don't come to 4chan looking to download copyrighted material en masse to store permanently, same with the other example, Youtube.

The whole purpose of downloading a single rom or a whole romset is to possess that data without authorization and use it however you like. There is no secondary purpose or "whoops, somebody included something they shouldn't have in this rom and now here I am looking at it". It's the rom itself.

So no, I will not stop using 4chan or Youtube, to answer the actual question that was asked. I will also not justify what other people choose to post on either site. Even if roms were some kind of incidental download as part of some website that served up data, what you do with it once it's on your hard drive or in ram or whatever takes intent on your part to interact with. It's not some pop-up webm of a film clip or deep-fried maymay somebody used to spice up the conversation.

No, it diminished in value over that time.
Buying used games is no different, it's an artificial market that benefits no one, and the law is wrong about IP in this manner.
That's why Nintendo can't make a full replica NES or SNES and sell the cartridges for the original value, they aren't worth that in the market.
